What is the purpose of this module??? This course is meant to show students the
importance of web design in society.

Assignment 2- Web Scavenger Hunt– Analyze 2 Websites

Answer the following questions:

1. Access the following website https://www.coaldale.ca/ and identify the purpose of the website. Answer: what is the
purpose of this website? (/1)
To learn more about about coaldale, to attract tourists and to give information to residents aswell as visitors.

2. What is the target audience of the website? Be specific. (/1)


The obvious target audience is the residents of coaldale, or soon to be residents. Also, it is intended for upcoming
business owners and tourists wishing to visit the town.

3. Name two elements of design for the above website, and include screenshots of these elements from the website.
You can take a screenshot by clicking the “print screen” button. This is out of 4 marks- 2 for the 2 elements named
correctly, and 2 for the 2 screenshots proving it. (/4)

4. Discuss the navigation of this website. Why is the navigation effective or ineffective? Why it an easy to use website
important in web design? (/2)
The navigation is very effective, they have a section of navigation by category which is really useful for navigating
around. An easy to use websit is important in web design because most people don’t want to spend their time trying
to find stuff on your website but learning on your website.

Now find one more website that is school appropriate (example: Lululemon, Nike, Palliser School Division, etc.)
and answer the questions from above in the space below. Make sure you make it clear which questions you are
answering.

Amazon

1:) The purpose of this website is to create a safe online shopping environment worldwide.

2:) There isn’t a targeted audience for Amazon, as anyone can buy anything they desire, with no bias or favouring, or
selected audience.

4;) The creators of this website have done a great job on making it easy to navigate. They have put a search bar on
the top and have made a category bar for anything you might be looking for. It is important for a website like amazon
to have a search bar and a category section because people might be looking for something specific they want to
buy.

Assignment 3- Professionalism and Media Safety

Answer the following questions:

What does professionalism mean? (/1)


A competence or skill expected of a professional.
What ways can you be professional when creating a website? (/1)
I can follow the tips from the slideshow and can also look back at the terrible websites to make
sure I dont make those mistakes.

Name 2 ways that you can edit your social media apps to be professional? (/2)
Change the snapchat bitmojis back to the original so mine does not look like an alien.

Make my instagram or tiktok pages more neat and sophisicated

(a) Pick a celebrity Will Smith
(b) Then see if this person is professional within their social media. You don’t need to tell
me the details of their social media. Just make sure to answer the questions below:

BE SCHOOL APPROPRIATE-automatic zero if not.

Pretend you are interviewing this person for your company (a company that
needs to be very professional). Your job is to make sure that person is right for
your company.

Here is what your company is looking for in staff:

- Social media is discrete/ professional on all platforms.


He shows all of his posts to everybody, and he does have a lot of posts.
Although, his pages are decently neat too appeal his professionalism
- Private settings (unable to see pictures and posts that may hinder the
job. What did you find? Explain ( min 3 sentences).
Will smiths social media accounts are not private. When you open
his page you find pictures and videos of him, his family and his life.
Anybody that comes to his page can see his posts.
- Google , Facebook, Instagram, TikTok etc… you should not be able to
see this individual. What did you find? Explain ( min 2 sentences).
The First thing you see is his face as a profile picture. As soon as
you enter his page, it is full of his life experiences and other posts.
He is not one to be private on social media, because you can see
him on multiple platforms.
- Google their name and see if you can see pictures of them? What type
did you find? Explain ( min 2 sentences).
When you google Will Smith you find pictures of him at interviews
and oscars. You also see pictures of his wife and kids.

1. Is your individual’s social media secure? (is it private or public)?


It is not secure, as his whole page is public.
2. Does your individual have images that could potentially affect their future job goals? (if
your individual applied for a job, would the employers see these pictures?)
The employers would be able to see his posts but nothing would really effect his
chances of getting a job because of his social media.
3. If an employer were to search your individual up on google, does facebook, instagram
etc social media show up?
Yes they would show up on google instantly.

4. Explain if your individual was professional or unprofessional.
Explain - 4 sentences minimum.

In my personal belief, I think Will Smith is professional.


Although his pages aren’t private, the things he posts are
things you want your future employer to see. Also, even
though he posts a lot, he keeps the page nice and neat. Also,
he keeps the page organized with links to his social media,
past stories, and other links to his podcast.

Assignment 4- Make Your Own Weebly


Step 1: View the Weebly tutorial (using either wikiHow:

Step 2: Explore Weebly’s best websites link: which template will suit you best for creating a portfolio
about you?

Step 3: Design a web page based on YOU by planning it out based on the requirements. Use the linked
flowchart to plan. This will be turned in. (see link)
Step 4: Complete Weebly Sign up (name, school email, password)

Step 5: Choose a Weebly Template (create a Personal Website, and then I recommend choosing a
Portfolio or Personal)

Step 6: Also choose an appropriate “domain name” for your site. It should have something to do with
this media class (for example: graciemorbeckmedia2023.com or graciemorbeckwebdesign.com). It will
auto-generate a free one for you.

Step 7: Click “Settings” and click the SEO section. Scroll down to the “hide site from search engines”
toggle, and switch it to On. This will prevent anyone from being able to google your site, and it will only
be discoverable if you give them the link.

Step 8: Stay on task so you can hand this in by the due date! You will need to add the tabs required by
clicking “pages” (see your website plan for more info) and then click “build” to add to this website.

You will be assessed on the appropriate criteria begin uploaded (relevant content), the purpose being
followed, the target audience in mind, consistency, visuals/fonts/colours/ and hierarchy, organizational
structure, image selection, links, usability/ readability/accessibility.

Checklist is on the next page for the criteria to be followed.

Include a picture of yourself!
Describe who you are. Give background information and include pictures & explanations
of what is important to you. This could be clubs, family, friends, KAHS, accomplishments,
etc. You may do so through a creative format such as a PowerPoint. (8 photos, 10 points
about you minimum)
Include a hyperlink to a quiz you did about yourself that you think proves who you are.
Buzzfeed has great silly ones!
Contact information should be left here. Include your school email, but your phone
number should be fake for the purposes of this project.
Work for this Class
Upload your assignments from this class. Look back on Google Classroom to remember
what you have submitted. This should be organized by module.
Reflection: reflect upon the work you have done in this class. Is it your best work? What
did you enjoy the most?
Blog
Write 2 entries. Below is your options:
Write about a goal you achieved and how you did it

Answer your “frequently asked questions” of what people may want to know

Peer Review
Each student will have their website critiqued to improve the overall appeal and function
of the site. The student assessor will answer the following questions about the website
they are assessing:
What are the potential layout improvements for this Website? What would
improve the current layout?
Is the site's navigation seamless and easy to navigate? What improvements
could be made?
Does this website display appropriately in various web browsers? List the
browsers tested and state whether the site displays properly or not?
Did this student organize, make easy to locate folders containing picture and text
files? Where they clearly labeled?
Then, respond to the peer review by answering the following questions:
Explain the changes you made to your website.
Why did you make the changes noted above?
What are some other ways you could collect feedback about your site?
What were the improvements to the layout of a web page that you made?
