I. Objectives
At the end of 45 minutes’ discussion, the students are expected to:
a. identify literal and figurative language;
b. classify the text in the story whether it’s literal or figurative language; and
c. develop an appreciation for the beauty and artistry of the language,
through the use of figurative language as a literary device in writing.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Literal and Figurative Languages
References: English Expressways III, 2007. 144,157, 251
Materials: Visual Aids, cut-outs, laptop, and projector
Values Integration: Develop a deep appreciation to the language
III. Procedures
A. Preliminary Activities
 Prayer
The teacher asks one student to lead a prayer.
 Greetings
The teacher greets the students and inspires them to learn
 Checking of attendance
The teacher checks and records the attendance of the
students.
 Review
The teacher asks the class about the previous lesson, and
what they have learned.
 Motivation
The teacher groups the students into two and plays “Figure it
Out”. Students are going to choose letters from the word
“FIGURATIVE” only. Then, the teacher flashes mystery
boxes with their corresponding letter, and let the students
figure out what’s inside the box. After, figuring it out, the
group is going to choose between to keep the box or give
the box to the other group. The box can be positive or
negative, if negative the group score reduces. The first group
to ring a bell is the first group to answer. Meanwhile, if the

other group cannot answer, the other group has a chance to


steal. The team with the most points win the game.
B. Lesson Proper
A. Activity
With the same group, each group are going to classify the text in the
story whether it’s literal or figurative language, and write down the
figures of speech used in a sentence.
B. Analysis
The teacher asks random students from each group to answer the
following questions:
1. What are the figure of speech used in the story?
2. Can you identify some examples of figurative language in the
story?
3. How does the use of figurative language add to the overall
meaning of the story?
4. Can you identify the literal language in the story?
5. How does the literal language differ from figurative language?
C. Abstraction
The teacher presents the topic using power point presentation
discussing the following:
1. Literal language- is the direct definition of words or phrases. It
is a straightforward type of wording where the meaning and
ideas are expressed directly. This is a type of language that
provides explicit explanation and meaning.

Examples:

1. After cleaning the house, Jonathan is extremely


hungry.
2. Jonathan has a bad temper.
3. Jonathan is smart and handsome.
2. Figurative Language -is a language that is intended to create an
image or other effect in the mind of the listener or reader. The idea
goes beyond the literal meaning.
Examples:
1. After cleaning the house, Jonathan can eat a ton of chicken.
2. Jonathan explodes like a bomb.
3. Jonathan shines like a diamond.

Primarily, Figurative language uses

Common Figures of Speech such as:

1. Simile- is an explicit comparison between two different things by using


“like” or “as”.

Ex. Jonathan is as brave as a tiger.

2. Metaphor- is an indirect comparison between two different things.

Ex. Jonathan has a heart of stone

3. Personification- an inanimate object is given human attributes or


traits.

Ex. Every morning, the sun smiles at him.

4. Hyperbole- exaggerates the meaning of the line.

Ex. Jonathan could break a ton of heart.

D. Application
The teacher asks the students to use the figurative language as a
literary device in writing in the scenario given below:
 Describe your crush using figurative language in one to three
sentences only.
IV. Evaluation
In ¼ sheet of paper, match column A to column B.
