I - Part One – Rules to Understand:

Adjectives

 Adjectives are words that modify, or add to and clarify the meaning of, nouns and
pronouns.
 Adjectives describe people, places, or things by telling what kind, how many, or which
one.
 what kind: size – shape – color – appearance – qualities -etc…
 how many: numbers such as: five – ten – hundred – thirty, & words such as: many –
several – some – few – etc.
 which one: this – that – these – those
 An adjective usually comes before the word it modifies.

 What Kind: a gigantic white iceberg

 How Many: numerous icebergs; several chances
 Which One: this lifeboat
 The articles a, an, and the appear before nouns or other adjectives.
 Use a before words that begin with a consonant sound: a disaster, a rapid speed.
 Use an before words that begin with a vowel sound or a silent h: an ending, an eerie
noise.
 Use the before words beginning with any letter: the site, the passengers.

 Comparative & Superlative Adjectives

 Comparative adjectives are used to compare two people, places, things, or groups.

 Add -er to most short adjectives to make their comparative forms.

 Use more with longer adjectives.

 Superlative adjectives are used to compare three or more people, places, things, or groups.

 Add -est to most short adjectives to make their superlative forms.

 Use most with longer adjectives.
