Submission Format
Report (produced using MS word) that includes all calculations, figures, discussion and conclusions.
Be organized and neat. Make sure to answer all prompts. Highlight the final answers. Include all the
relevant information, calculations, diagrams, photos, etc…. You may use a software package (Excel,
etc…) only where it is indicated that the use of such tools is allowed, otherwise you must use
analytical solutions as learned in class.
Submit a hardcopy (double-sided print) by the indicated deadline along with the signed student
declaration form.
Please make sure to sign the student deceleration at the end of this report.

including vector operations.

Background Information
The theoretical part of this project has been covered in your functional physics class (Chapter 2),
particularly the kinematic equations with constant acceleration and freely falling object.
Apparatus
1. PocketLab Voyager 2 sensor.
2. Length measuring tool.

Data Analysis
Using the acceleration vs. time graph:
1. In the a-t graph, highlight the region that represents the gravitational acceleration. (it
should be the region where the acceleration remains constant).
2. Use the data analysis to find out the mean of the highlighted values. Such mean value
represents the measured value of the gravitational acceleration.
3. Compare the measured value of the gravitational acceleration you obtained in Q2 with
the standard value (g=9.81m/s2)
4. Find the percentage error in your result. What error sources do you expect to have the
greatest impact on your result?
5. From the a-t graph find out the time required for the Voyager 2 to reach the ground
(flight time).
6. Use the relevant kinematic equation with the measured values of the gravitational
acceleration and the flight time to calculate the height above the ground from which
Voyager 2 is released to fall.

7. Compare the calculated height you obtained in Q6 with the measured height and
analyze the discrepancies or agreement between these two values.
Conclusion (Project # 1)
Write a conclusion paragraph about your observation of freely falling object as motion in 1D with
constant acceleration. Explain the source of errors and how you can improve the results.
Apparatus
1. PocketLab G-Force sensor.
2. A smartphone app to measure the angle of the incline.
3. Length measuring tool.
Data Analysis:
Part I
1. Highlight (either in x-t or in v-t graphs) the region that represents a constant acceleration.
2. Use the data analysis tools and draw the best-fit line for all the x-t, v-t, and a-t graphs.
3. Using the velocity versus time graph to find the initial and final velocities of the car. Those
values are called the measured values of the final and initial values of velocity.
4. Find out the time of the trip.
5. Use the kinematic equations with the measured value of the initial velocity and along with
considering the acceleration to be gsin to calculate the final velocity. The value you
obtained is called the calculated final velocity.
6. Compare the measured value of the final velocity you found out in Q3 with the calculated
one in Q5.
7. Explain the difference between the calculated and the measured values of the final velocity

you obtained.
Part II
8. Find out the acceleration of the car from the acceleration versus time graph (the mean
value).
9. Find out the acceleration of the car using the velocity versus time graph (the slope of the
line)
10. Compare the values you obtained in Q8 and Q9 with the value that can be obtained using
the formula (g sin). Analyse the discrepancies or the agreement between such values.
Part III
11. Use the kinematic equations that relate the displacement of the car to its acceleration and
the time of the trip to find the displacement of the car. Compare your result to the length of
the table.
12. Is the position versus time concave up or down? What does this indicate?
13. Find the value of the acceleration from the position versus time graph.
