Calculation Experiment 2a chm213

1) The order of reaction with respect to iodide (x) and peroxydisulphate (y) were determined using the initial rate method. x was found to be approximately 10 and y was found to be 2. 2) The rate constant k was calculated for each trial using the determined values of x and y. The average value of k was calculated to be 1.25×1016. 3) Based on the Arrhenius equation, the slope of the graphs would be expected to increase with temperature as the reaction rate is temperature dependent.

4. Calculate rate constant, k, using known values of x,y, [ l ‾ ]̥ [ S ₂ O ₈2 ‾ ] , for each trial and find an
average value of k.

c) Comment on the slope of both with reference to equation (3)

Based on the equation (3) which using:
rate of reaction
k= ̥
[ l ‾ ]̥ [ S ₂O ₈2 ‾ ]
According to Arrhenius, the reaction rate affects the graph's slope, which increases in almost all cases.
Mathematically, Ea<Rt and k increase quickly with t at very high temperatures.

d) Determine x and y from the plots respectively.

y = mx + c

Log(rate) vs. log [l⁻] ̥

Log(rate) vs. log[ S ₂O ₈2 ‾ ]

−2.65−(−3.93 )
m= −4.15−(−4.32 )
−1.1−(−1.2 ) m=
−1. 4−(−1. 5 )
= 12.8
= 1.7

-1.1 = 12.8 (-2.65) + c

-1.4 = 1.7 (-4.15) + c
C = 32.82
c = 5.7

y = 12.8x + 32.82
y = 1.7x + 5.7
0 = 12.8x + 32.82
0 = 1.7x + 5.7
X = 2.7
X = 3.4
y = 12.8(0) + 32.82
y = 1.7(0) + 5.7
y = 32.82
y = 5.7
∴ x = 2.7; y = 32.82
∴ x = 3.4; y = 5.7
