Lab Report 10

1. The document summarizes a lab experiment on controlling liquid level using an ON-OFF controller with varying hysteresis levels. 2. The student observed the effect of 0% and 10% hysteresis on the up-raising and lowering times and stability of the liquid level control system. 3. Increasing the hysteresis led to longer up-raising and lowering times but greater stability, showing a trade-off that must be considered based on the application.

Objectives:

 To understand the operation of closed loop.

 To understand the effect of hysteresis on control.
 To get familiar with level control module and trainer.
Equipment Used:

 Liquid Level Control Trainer.

 DMM.
 Wires.
Circuit Diagram:

Apparatus:

Figure 2: Apparatus
Procedure:
1. The LVDT transducer was connected to the transmitter through a connecting
wire in theconnectors 1 to 1.
2. The set point-1 was connected to the ON-OFF controller through connecting
wire in theconnector of set point-1 to 6.
3. The ON-OFF Controller was connected to the water pump driver through
connecting wirein the connectors 10 of hysteresis to 10 of water pump driver.
4. The bridge connections were made in the water pump driver 11-11 and 12-12
5. The live wire of the DMM was connected to setpoint-1.
6. The ground of DMM was connected to the ground of set point.
7. The power supply was switched ON.
8. The set point-1 was set to 3 V.
9. The flowrate was observed at hysteresis of 0% and 10%.
10. Observations were stored on a table.

Observations and Calculations:

Without Hysteresis:

Set Point (cm) 8 10 12

Lower Limit Set 8 10 12
Point (cm)
Up-raising Time (s) 0 0 0
Upper Limit Set 8 10 12
Point (cm)
Lowering Time (s) 0 0 0

With Hysteresis of 10 %:

Set Point (cm) 8 10 12

Lower Limit Set 8.4 10.3 12.7
Point (cm)
Up-raising Time (s) 2.58 1.08 1.93
Upper Limit 7 8.9 11.4
SetPoint
(cm)
Lowering Time (s) 6.44 10.16 4.08

Discussion:
The liquid level control system maintained a stable set point of 8 cm, 10cm and 12cm
across varying hysteresis levels from 0% to 10%. Higher hysteresis led to increased up-
raising and lowering times, indicating a trade-off between stability and responsiveness.
The lower and upper limit set points adjusted with hysteresis, influencing the system's
tolerance for liquid leveldeviations. The system's performance suggests a need for careful
parameter tuning based on specific application requirements. Overall, understanding
these dynamics is crucial for optimizing the liquid level control system in practical
scenarios. We cannot go beyond the hysteresis of 30%in this lab, this criterion is valid for
large scaled modeled systems.
Conclusion:

In this lab, a closed loop system of water level control is observed by changing the
hysteresis which may be defined as the deviation from steady state response. By
increasing the hysteresis deviation from steady state response is increased and vice versa.

Safety Precautions:
 Be vigilant while operating the equipment.
 Carefully handle the electrical connections.
 Make sure your hands are dry while touching electrical components.
 Do not spill water on the equipments.
 Check that all wires are connected properly.
 Turn on the power only after you've connected everything correctly.
