Classical Expert Systems

For the purposes of your exam there are 8 classical expert systems that you have to demonstrate
knowledge of. These notes very briefly describe each system in terms of the domain, main
characteristics and method of inferencing.

Mycin Category - Diagnosis

Domain - Bacterial blood infections
Characteristics - Used certainty factors to
handle uncertainty.
Used backward chaining as inferencing
method.
Prospector Category - Advice
Domain - Mineral Geology
Characteristics - Used fuzzy logic to handle
uncertain information. Produced results
matching those of a human very closely
Oncocin Category - Planning
Domain - Medical - cancer treatment
Characteristics - Automated process of
knowledge acquisition by consulting human
domain experts directly using an interview
session at the computer terminal.
Reduced time and cost in maintaining
knowledge base and eliminated neccesity for
knowledge engineer and programmer to enter
new domain knowledge.
Dendral Category - Classification
Domain - Molecular chemistry
Characteristics - Used forward chaining.
The earliest expert system taking over 20
person-years to develop.
Internist Category - Diagnosis
Domain - Medical diagnosis of internal
diseases
Characteristics - Combined forward chaining
and backward chaining to provide results.
Knowledge base had over 100,000 rules.
Strips Category - Not strictly an expert system -
used in Planning systems
Domain - Varies. Initially used in Robotic
developments.
Characteristics - Provided instructions to
allow a robot to navigate a room.
Major influence in development of planning
expert systems.

R1/Xcon Category - Planning
Domain - Computer configuration
Characteristics - Domain was such that no
certainty handling was required.
Mainly used the specificity conflict resolution
strategy.
OPS5 Category - Not an actual expert system
Domain - Production systems
Characteristics - Introduced the use of the
RETE algorithm. Implemented using LISP.

Question 1

Companies involved in extracting mineral deposits such as oil and iron ore make use of a range
of computer-based information systems, including decision support systems and expert systems.
The PROSPECTOR expert system was developed for use by mining companies. Describe this
expert system in terms of its category, domain, and main characteristics. (10 marks)

Question 2

Expert systems are used in a wide range of subject domains. Describe the domain, category and
main characteristics of the DENDRAL expert system.

Question 3

Research into the use of expert systems in medicine started in the early 1970's and
produced a number of ‘classical’ expert systems, including INTERNIST, MYCIN and
ONCOCIN.
a. Explain how the INTERNIST and MYCIN expert systems differ from ONCOCIN in
terms of their classification.
b. The ONCOCIN expert system was developed to be a clinical decision support system.
Distinguish between an expert system and a decision support system in terms of their
purpose within the field of medicine.

Question 4

The STRIPS expert system was developed in the early 1970s. Describe this expert system in
terms of category and main characteristics.

Question 5

Describe the MYCIN expert system in terms of its category, domain and main characteristics.
