1 OM Components
1.1 OM Computers
LKZ: DE
The OM system components use Pentium PCs. Their configuration and the connectable devices depend on
the corresponding type used. For more details please refer to the HB System Components and Peripheral
Devices.
ECCN: N
AL: N
The OM650 / OM650-ME user software running under the SCO-Unix operating system is subdivided into so-
called object managers:
The allocation between software function processing and OM system computers is as follows:
LKZ: DE
OT/COT X
PU (TXP) (X) 1) X X X
PU (OMME) (X) 1) X X X
SU X X X X
PU/SU (TXP) X X X X X X X

The object manager MMI is installed in the system components PU/OT and PU-ME/OT only.
In addition to the computers listed above, the OM650 operates the following additional hardware or peripheral
devices. Like the computers, they are described in the device manual "OM 650 System Components and
Peripheral Devices".
1.2.1 Keyboard
Use of a keyboard is optional for OM computers (either with standard US format or with German/international
format).
A mouse is absolutely necessary for graphical control. Only the device described in the LT600 catalog may be
used.
ECCN: N
Various monitor types are available that can be connected to the PC (see the LT600 catalog).
No longer available.
The interface extension card CHASE Research PCI Fast serial card (4port card) with RJ45 connector is used
to connect the touch screen panels.
50" reprojection large-area display units may be used instead of monitors. You can use either up to four display
units in single mode or one large-area display screen.
A color monitor can be directly connected to an integrated graphics card with specific software in the OT,
PU/OT and CU. However, use of a graphics server (mx-Terminal or mMT) allows you to connect up to four
monitors to each CU or PU/OT or to one OT.
The graphics server is attached as an integral part of the OT, PU/OT and CU variants. It nevertheless is a
separate peripheral device, which is available in different versions:
• with 1 to 4 channels
• for connecting monitors or large-area display modules
In addition, software installations for video inserts in large-area display units or display screens and use as a
DS670 client are available.
1.2.7 Printer
Logging printers used in the OM system for online logging and notebook functions are connected to the
OT/COT, PU/OT or CU via a serial port (ser Ι). Line printers or laser printers (PCL) are used.
LKZ: DE
Color plotters for printing trends are connected to the OT/COT, PU/OT or CU via the parallel port.
AL: N
Hard copies are output either via a separate hard copy server, which is an autonomous participant on the
terminal bus, or via hard copy software, which runs on an OT/COT, PU/OT or CU.
As of OM release 7.5, an OM 650 application (OHACO) will be available to control output. It is recommended
that you use a network printer for the output
For long-term archiving, each Server Unit and each Compact Unit can be provided with its own internal MOD
drive for magneto-optical disks (optional).
For servicing purposes, a DAT streamer can be connected to each OM computer via SCSI cable.
The DAT streamer in particular is required for saving and loading OM software.
For details on the DAT streamer connection see the manual titled "OM 650 System Components and
Peripheral Devices", register 2, Chapter 3.7
To carry out the operation and monitoring functions in the plant for process control and process information, the
OM650 only requires the OT/COT control elements of the graphical user interface.
The UNIX level is only required for performing installation, repair and maintenance work. If you want to be able
ECCN: N
to enter UNIX commands not only via remote access but also directly at the computer, a keyboard must be
connected to the corresponding computer. For reasons of convenience and cost-effectiveness, a multiplexer is
normally used for the OM computers of a plant. A multiplexer is used to connect all the OM computer keyboard
interfaces to a central keyboard. Together with a central monitor, this UNIX input station for the OM650
provides the master console or system console. This workstation is not covered by the OM650 device manual.
It is, however, the normal administrator workstation for performing the work described.

Instructions/ remedy:
Carry out a preventive shutdown and restart the OT-components.
Example of OM version 5.0x.xx
A diagnostic alarm is output informing you of the necessity to make a restart; the important information is the
duration (z.z days) of the remaining lifetime:
Login: txpom

For details concerning the handling of the various versions, please refer to change note OM-238-1.doc.
AL: N
This alarm appears for the first time with the prefix “FIRST“ when the remaining lifetime is less than 5.0 days. It
is then repeated each hour with the current values. The following command as user txpom can be used to
check the lifetime of all components:
Login: txpom
Path: /txptest/mmi
File name: MmiLog.0 and MmLog.1
Format: 13.03.2003 09:01:15 : GetUhr: run 121:02:03, resId 4318, maxResId
4194303
(GetUhr shows the runtime since the last start, resId the current counter reading and
maxResId the maximum counter value for comparison)
The following command as user txpom can be used to check all components:
LKZ: DE
(Poll tail -1 /txptest/mmi/MmiLog.0; Poll tail -1 /txptest/mmi/MmiLog.1) 2> /dev/null | grep "
'date +%d.%m.%Y ' "
Alternative:
You are also able to start the command for checking the components as user txpom via the file resid.sh (see
ECCN: N
Download).
The result will show the last lines of the files <MmiLog.0> and <MmiLog.1> (if present and if the lines have the
same date).
Example:
AL: N
ot01: 28.04.2004 08:09:53 : GetUhr: run 1032:17:29, resId 2193, maxResId 4194303
pu1a: ot04 : 28.04.2004 09:32:40 : GetUhr: run 40:00:40, resId 4769, maxResId 4194303
pu1b: ot02 : 28.04.2004 18:10:53 : GetUhr: run 1057:17:52, resId 181813, maxResId 2097151
ot01 : 28.04.2004 18:10:03 : GetUhr: run 1042:17:39, resId 2265, maxResId 4194303
ot03 : 28.04.2004 09:33:22 : GetUhr: run 139:02:19, resId 3383, maxResId 4194303
The example shows two lines for ot01 where the line with the latest date shows the current status (the last
line of <MmiLog.0> and <MmiLog.1> of ot01 has the same date).
Components without an OT functionality are identified by name, in this case pu1a and pu1b.
The information concerning the runtime, the current counter status and the limit value enables you to specify
the appropriate restart time of the respective component. The components should be checked in appropriate
time intervals.
Note:
The error cannot be entirely repaired in SCO-based OTs since it is a system feature of the X-Server.
2.1.3.1 General
The most important maintenance work required for OM computers is to ensure reliable data backup to make
provisions for future computer replacement.
The backup procedure depends on the type of computer used and on the operating system. The various
procedures are described in the manual titled "OM 650 System Components and Peripheral Devices" in the
registers "Installation Manual".
• OM 650 Installation manual revision level 7, Chapter 7
for all PC types PCD-5T / Primergy 351 / ProM7 / Primergy 170 under SCO 5.0.4
• OM 650 Installation manual PG Unix, Chapter 7

installation or configuration.
After a maximum of one year, old tapes should be copied onto new ones in order to ensure that the backup
tapes are still readable.
Backup tapes must be stored separately from the computer in a fire-proof place.

• You can now remove the ventilation fan towards the outside.
To install a fan carry out the same steps described under the Chapter "Removing the Ventilation fan" but in
reverse order.
If you install a new fan, the R.P.M. must be calibrated (see "Ventilation Fan Calibration").
Each new fan must be calibrated once. It might be necessary to repeat calibration some time later. This is
indicated by E:Filter in the operation indicator of the lighting unit. Calibration is done using microprocessor
control, which evaluates the R.P.M. of the ventilation fan.
[In earlier models the degree of soiling of the filter fleece was monitored by this facility. For calibration the
ventilation fan was covered to the extent to which later soiling seemed to be acceptable. Since this check is no
longer carried out calibration is done with the ventilation fan totally covered!]
In order to be able to calibrate the ventilation fan the lighting unit must be attached to the projection unit and it
must have reached its operating temperature (switch on the main switch some minutes before). The filter fleece
must be clean.
• Press the START button! The operation indicator shows 'check fan......xxxx" then 'FANCONTROL'.
(xxxx provides information on the ventilation fan speed.)
• Press the STOP key! END is displayed.
• Press the START key! 'FMW-xxxx-xx' appears (xxxx-xx provides information on the lighting unit used).
Fan calibration is now complete.
Be extremely careful when you unpack the screen. Otherwise irreparable damage
might result.
• Immediately install the screen module after unpacking! Do not put it on the floor!

2.2.6 Printer
Follow manufacturer’s instructions regarding maintenance.
Magneto-optical disks are maintenance-free. This applies to both the drive and the storage media.
The MOD media are normally used for archiving only once. Basically you may use them as often as you like. If
you want to delete the MODs and archive new data please call your service partner.
Only use the original cleaning cartridge to clean the magnetic heads.
!
Write the date on the cleaning cartridge label. You will then know how often you have used the cleaning
cartridge.
Do not use the cartridge more than 25 times.
LKZ: DE
Cleaning takes about 30 seconds. If the cleaning cartridge is ejected after less than 20 seconds it is probably
worn. Then use a new cartridge.

• The battery level/utility indicators display the current battery level as a percentage of the battery capacity.
All five LED indicators illuminate at full load. As capacity decreases, fewer indicators remain illuminated.
Each indicator represents a 20% capacity level. If the lowest LED starts flashing the UPS supplies voltage
for less than 2 minutes.
• The load indicator displays electrical load placed upon the UPS by the OM computers. If all LEDs
illuminate thoroughly check whether the UPS is overloaded.
• A battery mode operation LED illuminates if the UPS operates from battery mode. In addition, a
continuous alarm sounds with four beeps every 30 seconds. The alarm stops as soon as the UPS operates
from mains power.
LKZ: DE
If the UPS operates on battery although normal mains power is present, the UPS input circuit breaker may
have tripped. In this case check the load placed upon the UPS and press the circuit breaker at the rear of
the device. Tripped overload circuit breakers are the most frequent UPS problem, which, however, should
not occur when connecting an OM computer.
ECCN: N
• If the UPS supplies the PC with mains power the Online-LED illuminates.
• The replace battery LED illuminates if the UPS battery level is low and the battery must be replaced. If the
battery fails the self-test the UPS beeps for one minute. The UPS repeats the signal every 5 hours.
AL: N
The UPS comes with a replaceable battery. To replace the battery the operation manual must be strictly
observed.
Opening the UPS may expose you to dangerous voltages. So do not try and
disassemble the device. Only the battery may be replaced.
Except for the battery, the device does not contain parts that have to be maintained by the user.
The UPS batteries are reusable. For disposal refer to your local codes for disposal requirements.
When replacing batteries, use batteries of the same type and the same number as the
! ones originally installed in the UPS.
UPS self-test
The UPS automatically carries out a self-test each day at 8:14 a.m.
The self-test can also be manually initiated, if required. To do so press the switch-on button of the
UPS for approx. 3 seconds.
Explanation of the UPS faults and status alarms (also see Chapter 3.1.)
"Device monitoring for UPS" is a new OM 650 function that indicates events in the ASD that are important for
UPS operation.
Up to now, only the UPS front panel has been available for indicating the status.
The ASD will now inform the operator of the occurrence of important UPS events. Details about the events are
provided in the file /usr/lib/powerchute/powerchute.log.
Signals that the battery capacity is not enough to support the connected load for a pre-specified period of time
if required (2 minutes). The system is shut down after 5 seconds. Check whether you need to replace the
battery.
If this event was caused by a load peak it could be that the status is revoked after a short period of time (1 to 2
seconds, UPS Return from Low Battery).
ECCN: N
The ASD alarm can be immediately reset by carrying out a "Manual self-test”. Otherwise it is reset during the
next automatic self-test (8:14 a.m.).
“Battery is Discharged”
Signals that the battery is empty. During normal operation this is the case if the battery has been discharged
AL: N
due to loading. This condition may be revoked if the battery had enough time to recharge (UPS Return from
Low Battery).
The ASD alarm can be immediately reset by carrying out a "Manual self-test”. Otherwise it is reset during the
next automatic self-test (8:14 a.m.).
If a battery needs to be changed, replacement batteries are available over the official spare parts service.
Keeping a spare battery only makes sense if it is installed in a UPS casing that is permanently connected to
power. This will ensure maximum service life of the battery.

faults and defects of devices or of the associated software.
The S- and F-type I&C alarms are displayed in the operator ASD and the D-type alarms in the I&C ASD.
Remedies are specified for fault alarms whenever possible.
ECCN: N
Where no remedy is specified the alarms are status alarms which are only provided for information purposes.

parameterized
Since operation and monitoring are of prime importance for the system, the OM computers are normally used
redundantly, Operating Terminals have parallel redundancy, PU and SU have 1-out-of-2 redundancy. This
means that a second OT with the same functionality is operated in parallel.
For the PU and SU one computer is always the master while the other one runs in stand-by and is continuously
updated in order to be able to become master without any loss in functionality if the original master fails.
This scheme ensures continuous operation in the event of a computer failure. Redundant operation of the
computers must be immediately restored.
In order to prevent computer failure due to voltage fluctuations and protect the software against damage OM
computers might have to be connected to a UPS. If the mains voltage fails, the power supplied by the UPS. If
utility power does not return within 2 minutes the SCO-Unix computer shuts down in an orderly manner.
Every 30 seconds an alarm is output on the system console indicating shutdown in x seconds. Before the
operating system is shut down you are able to perform minor actions. For example you are able to check the
voltage supply of the UPS.
Orderly shutdown of a Unix operating system is particularly important for a successful restart of the computer.
LKZ: DE
Before you switch off a UNIX computer make sure that you have shut down the operating
! system!
If an OM computer has crashed you may try the following measures to restore operation.
ECCN: N
1. First activate a script by calling up the SAMPLER. This will help you to find the cause of the crash, with the
support of the hotline.
2. Start up the computer as User root using init 6
Not only is the operating system restarted by this measure but the OM processes run up due to the
automatic start.
AL: N
If parameterized accordingly, the system is automatically restarted after shutdown. Up to 2 restarts are possible
per hour as a standard in order to prevent components to be cyclically started up and shut down in the event of
non-sporadic faults. The termination of the object manager normally causes the OM computer to be shut down.
This is not the case for non-redundant CUs, PUs or SUs.
The hard disk of the new computer must be of the same type as the hard disk of the original
! computer!
To install a new hard disk you need the following: a Boot diskette and the Root Filesystem floppy, an external
DAT drive and an updated backup on DAT.
Make sure the external DAT drive is connected before you boot the computer.
!
If hard disk backups were generated by the old backup method (i.e. not with Om.Backup),
! the hard disks can only be restored using the old method also.
LKZ: DE
Make sure that the backup data is current. If you are not sure consult your regional service
! partner.
ECCN: N
For details on how to restore data refer to the manual "OM 650 System Components and Peripheral Devices",
register "Installation Manual", Chapter Data Backup.
If you are not able to restore the hard disk check the backup tape and consult your regional
! service partner.
AL: N
After restoring the hard disk you can start the OM software on the new computer.
Make sure that the infrastructural data has not changed in the meantime. Otherwise it must be matched to the
new infrastructure.
All configuring data must be newly transferred.
Network cards are not included in the spare part range and normally can therefore not be
replaced. If you should, however, exchange the cards of various devices please keep the
following in mind:
The interface assignment is component-specific. For an exact description please refer to the TELEPERM XP
device manual on OM 650/ME system components and peripheral devices.
Particularly if you exchange network cards for the components OT with a terminal connected, an ES-CU and
ES-GET which use 2 cards please be sure to plug the card with the lower Ethernet address into slot 1 (AUI,
drop cable) and the card with the higher Ethernet address into slot 4 (BNC, coax cable).
The Ethernet address is imprinted on the network card as a 12 digit Hex code such as EA = 0020AF36E685 .
Only the network cards specifically configured for these devices may be used.

3.4.1 Keyboard
If the keyboard is defective it must be replaced. You may replace the keyboard while the computer is switched
on.
Monitor remains dark, the LED is illuminated Check the brightness and contrast
One or two colors are absent Make sure the video cable is correctly connected to
the PC and the graphics server and the monitor
Incorrect display size Make sure the height and width are correctly adjusted
Incorrect display position Make sure the horizontal or vertical position of the
display is centered.
If the OT or CU screen turns dark or gray (no displays), do not immediately switch off the computer!
First make sure that the cables are plugged into the PC, mx/mmT-Terminal and monitor and check the power
supply. The fact whether only one OT screen or all screens have failed provides information on whether the
problem lies with the monitor or the computer. If it doesn't lie with the monitor, check the status of the computer
procedures at the system console. You may have to restart the OM procedures (init 6) or to shut down the OT
or CU (init 0).
3.4.6 Printer
Operation faults at the printer, such as "load paper", are indicated in the alarm sequence display of the OT via
the associated object manager.
To this end the object manager requires a corresponding feedback from the printer.
If the printer is switched off it cannot issue a fault alarm if it is to be used for printing. Printers which are
required to be ready for operation therefore should never be switched off.
LKZ: DE
The printers have a fault detection function. If a fault occurs the control panel shows a corresponding alarm and
message. The indicators and an exact description in your operation manual help you to identify the exact fault
cause. In particular, you will be specifically required to check the power cable, paper guide and the ink and
toner cartridges for troubleshooting (see also the change notes in the current OM 650 Printer Manual).
ECCN: N
If you should not be able to solve a problem please consult your service partner.
You might need to replace your printer.
Alarm Description
22 Paper Jam Paper jam in the paper path.
31 Change Paper The printer job requires another paper format than is loaded in the paper tray.
The paper format required is displayed at the LCD.
36 Load Paper The paper tray is empty or the paper is not properly fed.
If the hard copy printer is connected to a hardcopy server first make sure that the hard copy server is running
and is properly connected to the terminal bus.
If these external conditions are all met, it may help to reset the hard copy server.
LKZ: DE
If the problem persists and you still have not found the cause, there are two possibilities to localize the fault:
• View the fault log
• Make a test print
ECCN: N
To check the hard copy server connect the keyboard and monitor to the control unit.
To carry out the tests described below the hard copy server software should be deactivated. Please proceed as
follows:
Comment out the call-up of the command file hcrun.cmd from the startup file C:\STARTUP.CMD and reboot
your PC.
AL: N
The hard copy server software checks and logs all procedures if you have set the parameter -d accordingly in
the command box when starting hcx (see Chapter 4.2.1 of the operation manual).
This information is normally stored in the files
c:\hcx\etc\hcerr1 and
c:\hcx\etc\hcerr2
and can also be displayed on the screen (see Chapter 4.2.1 of the operation manual). During an update run
these files are copied to the update/diagnosis diskette into the directory a:\diagnose where they can be
viewed.
Communications between the control unit and the printer are simply tested by a test print.
The program palette included in the scope of supply prints a color palette with 512 colored patches.
To activate a test print proceed as follows:
Change to the directory c:\hcx\etc
Start the program palette by entering
palette
A test print is output.
If you should not be able to solve the problem please consult your service partner.
After you have configured long-term archiving via magneto-optical disks the MOD is operated via the OT or CU
interface (see operation manual "TELEPERM XP, OM650, Process Information").
Troubleshooting is also handled via the TXP interface using easily understandable alarms.
If fault alarms occur during initialization, use another MOD.
If fault alarms occur during activation, use another MOD. Maybe you also forgot to insert a MOD or you did not
initialize it.
If fault alarms occur during deactivation repeat the procedure after some minutes.
If you still should not be able to write onto a DAT tape after you have used a cleaning tape, try a new tape.
You also might have to replace the drive.
If you have problems reading a DAT tape, check whether the tape can be read on another drive and whether
other tapes can be read on the drive used or not.
ECCN: N
If the tape can be read on another drive and the tape drive is correctly accessed you must replace the drive.
