Module 1: Four-Way Test

Go-Jek is an information technology company in Indonesia that build a super-app for

ride-hailing, food delivery, courier service, and other services. Go-Jek was founded by Nadiem

Makarim in 2010. For the first five years, the traction was not significant until it launched a

mobile app in January 2015. Not waiting for so long, in August 2016 it got a Unicorn status after

obtaining U$550 million investment (Pratama, 2016).

In delivering the great products that can serve the customer's needs, Go-Jek hires several

professionals from outside Indonesia, such as United States, Germany, India, France, and many

more. The management made this decision to welcome contributions from all employees without

seeing their race, age, religion, or gender. This leads Go-Jek to become a company that must

concern to the diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

The Four-Way Test

Is it the truth?

The truth of working with teams from other countries can cause a discomfort

environment for some people in the workplace. People need to understand other’s cultures, ethic

and morality, law regulations, etc. For example, some men in Indonesia are discomfort if their

direct manager is a woman, or some men are more comfortable with the diverse team from

Europe than India, or religious people avoid working with the LGBT because of their faith.

Yet, the facts shared by Suarez (2017) tells that the truth of working diversity and

inclusion gives more benefits for the company and the employee’s wealth and career. Suarez

(2017) shared that diverse companies bring in more revenue 15 times and fosters more creativity

and innovation in the workplace.

Is it fair to all concerned?

Go-Jek managements show that they work on this decision fairly without favoritism, self-

interest, or indulging their own likes and dislikes. Equal opportunity is given to all employees with fair

assessment, salary and benefits. By making this fairness, employees with the same level in Indonesia and

other countries will have the same salary and benefits. Employees with disability also received this

fairness on their working time and equipment.

Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

After Go-Jek obtained the unicorn status, it started the expansion to the neighbour countries

such as Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. As a global business, Go-Jek will build the goodwill by the

Indonesian people, governments, communities, and other companies. In 2021, Go-Jek became the first

Indonesian company and first signatory of the Women Empowerment Principles to increasing gender

equality and inclusivity (The Jakarta Post, 2021).

This also means that Go-Jek made better friendships with communities and government.

Communities and government will respect this movement, and citizens will give more trusts. Not only

with them, but also with the employees. They will enjoy and comfortable with the workplace.

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

People naturally act in their self-interest. Their perspective sometimes creates confrontation,

not cooperation. Go-Jek leaderships understand that to succeed in the long run, they should strive for

making this happened in the company. They need to influence people that this decision will bring more

benefits to the stakeholders and shareholders, and this is a winning investment that will create respect

and loyalty, in domestic and international markets.
