Class Test 2 DOTS

This document contains a 4 question test on the design of transmission systems being held at Dumka Engineering College on July 26, 2023. The test covers calculating the mass of clutch shoes, the inner diameter of a cone clutch, the engagement force and power capacity of a multi-disk clutch, and the energy absorbed and torque capacity of a flywheel brake.

Class Test1
Subject :- Design of transmission system (ME 603 ) date 26-07-2023, time 50 min

1. A centrifugal clutch, transmitting 20 kW at 750 rpm consists of four shoes. The clutch is to be engaged at
500 rpm The inner radius of the drum is 165 mm. The radius of the centre of gravity of the shoes is 140
mm, when the clutch is engaged. The coefficient of friction is 0.3, while the permissible pressure on
friction lining is 0.1 N/mm2 Calculate: (i) the mass of each shoe;

2. A cone clutch with asbestos friction lining transmits 30 kW power at 500 rpm. The coefficient of friction is
0.2 and the permissible intensity of pressure is 0.35 N/mm2. The semi-cone angle α is 12.5°. The outer
diameter is fixed as 300 mm from space limitations. Assuming uniform wear theory, calculate: (i) the inner
diameter;

3. A multi-disk clutch consists of five steel plates and four bronze plates. The inner and outer diameters of the
friction disks are 75 and 150 mm respectively. The coefficient of friction is 0.1 and the intensity of pressure
on friction lining is limited to 0.3 N/mm2. Assuming uniform wear theory, calculate: (i) the required force
to engage the clutch; and (ii) power transmitting capacity at 750 rpm.

4. A solid cast iron disk, 1 m in diameter and 0.2 m thick, is used as a flywheel. It is rotating at 350 rpm. It is
brought to rest in 1.5 s by means of a brake. Calculate (i) the energy absorbed by the brake; and
(ii) the torque capacity of the brake.
