What is a Technical Drawing?
Technical drawing is also referred to as technical drafting. It’s a drawing that is used to represent
an idea or plan detailing the process of how to carry it out.

Technical drawing- is a graphic representation of a real thing, an idea, an object, a process, or a


system, using universal language consisting of graphic symbols.
Technical drafting- is the process of creating technical drawings.
Can you clearly elaborate the difference between technical drawing and technical drafting?

Who creates Technical Drawing?


A draftsman, or drafter, creates technical designs or drawings.
If you have skills in drawing and an interest in the technical aspects of construction, a career as a
drafter may be perfect for you.

A draftsman is a skilled professional who produces technical drawings based on the briefs and
designs of architects, engineers or clients.

Drafters use CAD software or freehand/ manual drafting to convert the designs of architects
and engineers into technical drawings
• Draftsman responsibilities:
• Preparing both rough sketches and detailed work
with CADD systems
• Performing calculations for materials and weight
limitations.
• Communicating with architects and engineers, and
incorporating knowledge gained into drawings.
• Preparing, reviewing and redrafting alongside the
engineering team.

Types of drafting
Architectural drafting pertains to the making of working plans for buildings for residential,
business, manufacturing, religious, recreational and storage purposes.

Machine/mechanical drafting is the preparation of detail and assembly working drawings of


machines and their parts.

Structural drafting refers to the making of working drawings of steel buildings, bridges, towers,
dams and so forth.

Piping drafting process plant drawings describe the arrangement of piping and may be drawn as
plans and elevations.
Types of drafting
Electrical and electronics drafting produces schematic wiring diagrams for either house wiring
connections and radio and television receivers and transmitters or the installation of electrically-
operated machines.

Topographical drafting is the making of plots or maps for various purposes.

Aircraft drafting concerns the preparation of working drawings of aircraft, including helicopters,
planes, rockets and spaceships.

Ship drafting is the making of working plans for all types of ship and for either commercial or naval
purposes.

Furniture drafting includes not only the making of working drawings of the various types of furniture
but also the designing of them.

Landscape drafting designs that include plants, walkways, shrubs and other attractive features for
parks, homes, building and even open spaces.
