Module 2 AC Circuit Analysis

Part I
1) Given the sinusoid 30sin(4πt-750), calculate its amplitude, phase, angular frequency,
period, and frequency.
2) A current source in a linear circuit has
I = 15cos(25πt+250) A
a) What is the amplitude of the current?
b) What is the angular frequency?
c) Calculate I at t = 2 ms
3) The maximum values of the alternating voltage and current are 400 V and 20 A respectively
in a circuit connected to 50 Hz supply and these quantities are sinusoidal. The instantaneous
value of the voltage and current are 283 V and 10 A respectively at t = 0 both increasing
positively. Write down the expression for voltage and current at time t.
4) Find the average and RMS values for the waveforms shown in Figure

Part II
1) A series RLC circuit containing a resistance of 10 Ω, inductance of 0.18 H and a capacitor
of 120 μF are connected in series across a 240 V, 50 Hz supply. Find
a) Impedance
b) Circuit current
c) Phase angle between voltage and current
d) Power factor
2) A parallel RLC circuit containing a resistance of 60 Ω, inductance of 80 mH and a capacitor
of 30 μF are connected in parallel across a 12 V, 60 Hz supply. Find
a) Impedance
b) Current flowing in each element.
3) Find the input impedance for the circuit shown in figure. Assume that the circuit operates
at ω = 50 rad/s.

4) Find the input impedance for the circuit shown in figure. Assume that the circuit operates
at ω = 10 rad/s.

13) A series RLC circuit containing a resistance of 80 Ω, inductance of 240 mH and a capacitor
of 5 mF are connected in series across a v(t) = 10cos2t

14) Find current i for the circuit shown in figure when
vs(t) = 50cos200t V

15) Find admittance for the circuit shown in figure

Part III
1) Calculate the instantaneous power and average power absorbed by the passive linear
network
v(t) = 330cos(10t+200) V and i(t) = 33sin(10t+600) A
2) A current I = 33∠300 A flows through an impedance Z = 40∠-220 Ω. Find the average
power delivered to the impedance.
3) For a load Vrms = 110∠850 V, Irms = 0.4∠150 A. Determine
a) Complex and apparent power
b) Real and reactive power
c) Power factor and load impedance
4) The voltage across a load and the current through it are given by
v(t) = 20+60cos(100t) V and i(t) = 1-0.5sin(100t) A
a) RMS values of the voltage and current
b) Average power dissipated in the load
5) For the following voltage and current phasors, calculate the complex power, apparent
power, real power, and reactive power. Specify whether the Power Factor (PF) is leading
or lagging.
