Qs.1 A Mild Steel wire 5 mm in diameter and 1 m long. If the wire is subjected to an axial tensile
load 10 kN find its extension of the rod. (E = 200 GPa)
Ans.
From given, we have,
A mild steel wire 5 mm in diameter and 1 m long.
The wire is subjected to an axial tensile load 10 kN
we know that, the change in length, ΔL = PL/AE
P = 10 kN = 10 × 1000 N,
L = 1 m,
A = πd²/4 = π × 5²/4 = 19.63 mm² = 1.963 x 10-5 m²,
E = 200 × 10^9 N/m2.
∴ ΔL = (10 × 1000 × 1) / (1.963 × 10-5 × 200 × 10^9)
⇒ ΔL = 10000/3926000
∴ ΔL = 2.547 × 10^-3 m
The extension of wire will be by 2.547 × 10^-3 m
Qs.2 ) A steel rod 500mm long and 20mm x 10mm in cross-section is subjected to an axial load pull
of 300KN. If the modulus of elasticity is 2x105MPa, calculate stress, strain and elongation of the rod.
Qs.3 Two wooden planks 150 mm X 50 mm each are connected to form a T-section of a beam. If
a moment of 3.4 kNm is applied around the horizontal neutral axis, inducing tension below the
neutral axis, find the stresses at the extreme fibers of the cross- section. Also calculate the total
tensile force on the cross- section.
Qs.4 A composite rod is 1000 mm long; its two ends are 40 mm2 and 30 mm2 in area and length are
300 mm and 200 mm respectively. The middle portion of the rod is 20 mm2 in area and 500 mm
long. If the rod is subjected to an axial tensile load of 1000 N, find its total elongation. (E = 200 GPa).
Qs.5 In a tension test, a metallic rod of diameter 16mm produces an elongation of 48mm when
subjected to 90KN load. The length of the rod is 150mm. Find modulus of elasticity.
Qs.6. Derive a relationship among bulk modulus, young’s modulus and poison’s ratio.
Qs.7 A steel bar 1.5mm long,50mm wide and 20mm thick is subjected to an axial tensile load of
120KN.If the extension in the length of the bar is 0.9mm, make calculation for the intensity of
stress, strain and modulus of elasticity of the bar material.
Qs.8 A block 100 mm × 100 mm base and 10 mm height. When we apply a tangential force 10
kN to the upper edge it is displaced 1 mm relative to lower face. Then the direct shear stress in
the element
Qs.9Draw the shearing force and bending moment diagram of the simply supported beam as
shown in figure. From the diagram, get maximum sagging and hogging moment. Also show the
point of contra flexure if any.
Qs.10 A hollow cast iron cylinder 5 m long, 400 mm outer diameter, and thickness of metal 60
mm is subjected to a central load on the top when standing straight. The stress produced is
75000 kN/m2. Assume Young’s modulus for cast iron as 1.5 x 108 kN/m2 and find:
a. Magnitude of the load
b. Longitudinal strain produced
c. Total decrease in length
Qs.11 The modulus of elasticity and rigidity of a material are 200 GPa and 80 GPa, respectively.
Find all other elastic modulus.
Qs.12 A wire, 4mm in diameter, 4m long is subjected to an axial pull of 1890N. It is stretched by
3mm under the axial pull. Find the value of stress, strain and modulus of elasticity.
Qs.13.For a certain material, modulus of elasticity is 169MPa. If Poisson’s ratio is 0.32, calculate the
values of modulus of rigidity and bulk modulus.
Qs.14.A rod has a length of 10m at 100C and its temperature is raised to 700C. If the free expansion
is prevented, find the magnitude and nature of stress produced. Take E= 210KN/mm2 and α=12 x
10-6 / 0C.
Qs.15.A 25 metre long beam has simple support at a and d. Its load distribution is shown in
figure. Evaluate the support reactions, shear force and bending moment distribution and draw
