Tajmar James - Lab-Simple Pendulum

This document outlines an experiment to investigate the effect of length on the period of a simple pendulum. The experiment involves measuring the time for 20 swings of a pendulum with varying lengths using a stopwatch. The data is recorded in a table and a graph of period versus length is plotted. From the graph, the relationship between length and period can be analyzed, and the periods for specific lengths determined.

EXP. SKILL: ORR & AI PHYSICS LAB #1 - JGHS SCIENCE DEPT.

2020

Topic: Simple Pendulum

Aim: To investigate the effect of length on the period of a simple pendulum.

Apparatus/ Materials: pendulum, metre rule, clamp stand, stop watch

PLEASE NOTE:

 One Oscillation is the movement of the bob from G1 to G2 and back to G1

 The amplitude is the furthest position of the pendulum from its resting position.
 Period is the time taken for one complete oscillation.
 Length of pendulum must be measured from the support point to the centre of the
bob.

Method:

1. Fix the string of the pendulum so that it is firmly clamped and the bob is
free to swing.
2. Measure the length of the pendulum accurately.
3. Pull the pendulum bob to one side (at a small angle) and release it.
EXP. SKILL: ORR & AI PHYSICS LAB #1 - JGHS SCIENCE DEPT. 2020

4. Using a stop watch, measure the time for 20 swings. Carry out at least three
trials to improve accuracy. Record these measurements in the table.
5. Calculate the time for one swing.
6. Change the length of the pendulum and repeat steps three and four.
7. Repeat step five until you have enough results to plot a graph.
Data Analysis:
8. Plot a graph of period (y-axis) against length (x axis). Make sure your
length axis covers a range of 0-100cm.
9. Using your graph, comment on the relationship between the length of the
pendulum and its period.
10.From your graph, find the period of the pendulum of length 38cm and
100cm.
11.From your graph, find the length of a pendulum, which would have a period
of 1s.
Results Table: (Remember - give your table an appropriate title)
Length of Time for 20 swings (s) Average Time for 1
Pendulum time for 20 swing
(cm) Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 swings (s) /Period (s)

(trial 1 + trial 2 Average time ÷

+ trial 3) ÷ 3 20

Conclusion: write a suitable conclusion for this experiment
