Chapter 1 PART 1
BOOK REVIEW:
The foremost few chapters of 1984 are reserved for presenting the
significant characters and pieces of the novel. The main character, Winston,
explains the world and the war in his mind. He shows readers how society
manipulates people, and "Big Brother" watches every act they do." Orwell, the
novel's writer, also spends time on the nature of the governing body and the
four ministries controlling the population. I like how the author needs to give
more detail about these characters for us to continue reading this novel. We
need to be more translucent about our minds on the exact information. The
In the middle of the chapter, they also dip into the mind of Winston's
view of reality rather than what Big Brother imposed. After he takes his Victory
cigarettes and Gin, he sees things clearly and starts to write in his journal.
The fact that Winston is making those words that can contradict the
government makes the story more exciting and hooks the readers' interest in
what will happen next. They also introduced the "New Speak," the party

language that seeks to eliminate freedom for the people. Orwell then
proceeds to show Winston's fear by ending the chapter with a knock at the
door and Winston accepting his fate almost blatantly as he leaves the book
plain open for anyone to see, almost in a deliberate act to get caught. Orwell,
within the chapter, makes several references to Animal Farm, the novel he

The phase of this part made my heart pound faster because Winston is
careless in his diary even though it will result in different consequences; there
are a lot of restrictions on the rules of the party. The ink stain on the hand of

In this modern time, there's a lot of fake news spreading, and many
people are blinded by these overflowing ideas that they cannot quickly identify
what is wrong and what is not, making our world more complex. I will also
connect this story. This Memory hole can vanish everything about facts that
they want to disappear and not exist in that era. We also learn that Smith
works in the records of the Ministry of Truth and re-rights history according to
what Big Brother wants. The writer also wants to reveal that some workers are

fear punishment. The workers or even normal people stayed quiet for their
safety even though they knew dirty secrets that could help the community
improve. That's why we should salute the individuals willing to sacrifice their

also prohibited. In this part, Winston starts to write in his diary secretly and
tells about his experiences with desires and sexual acts. We all know that love
will not vanish in our lives, and it's part of our life and soul. It motivates us to
continue in this world and makes us feel alive until the end. In that world, sex
should not be pleasurable but for procreation only. He also stated his
crime. Katherine, the ex-wife, was pushed to have sex with him once a week
because it was their responsibility to the party, and then ditched him when
celibacy for both sexes. They want to remove all pressure on the sexual act,
and there's also a line in the book that if that couldn't be killed, then distort
and dirty it. We all know the government is selfish, so even in marriages, they
only want offspring for the party's service. I think it's so hard to live in that era
because it's like "living but not breathing." You will live as a hard rock with

no emotions, and how will we call ourselves humans if we don't feel anything
to people? Attraction and love unite us to build ourselves and live to the
fullest. It will also help our mind to think twice and see the flaws in ourselves
and what individuals we are when associating with humans because others,
our family, or even our partner will be the only ones who will be honest about
how we deal with people. They will give life advice to help us make decisions

BOOK REVIEW:
The government that promotes the well being and right of its citizens
should be the right that is worth fighting for. Winston in this chapter
understands the principles that are inside in this form of government. The
instant. They also said that they need to be conscious first for them to rebel
and until after they rebel they cannot become conscious which is true they
need to open the eye of the proles to see the dirty actions and governance of
the government. We can also connect this generation that a lot of people are
10
not aware or the only thing that they see or hear are their broken promises not
the actions that bring so much trouble in society. Like in the last elections we
cannot hide that many individuals are blinded and not choose carefully the
leader that can bring so much impact and have good intentions on the
government.
I liked how the woman's being emphasized in this chapter and they are
being empowered and can also fight their rights against the party like now that
this is being tackled and they have a voice that can change their perspective
and they should not be belittled. The quote “freedom is the freedom to say two
plus two is equal to four and if that is granted everything follows' ' it shows that
even in a small step it's still a progress and if they work together and if a lot of
people are aware of their rights. What I don't like even today on the belief that
if you are slave, poor, and prole you will stay and contented with that even
though they can make a move to change their status in life and they should
believe on themselves that they can do everything even fight those capitalists
to end the torture physically, mentally and emotionally and even in all aspects
of life. They need to feel that they are not being owned by anyone and the
only one that owns them is themselves. There is a rumor that the Revolution's
founding leaders started in the middle of the 1960s. All of them had vanished
and Rutherford, were the last to survive and were taken into custody in 1965.
Even though many people failed in the fight and Winston saw some of the
fighters show that they were mighty, it was not a hindrance to stop but to be
more prepared and keep fighting for what is suitable for all.

Every human has a different story. We will get inspiration and think we
are lucky in this era. After the ceremony, Winston helps a girl to get up when
the girl stumbles on his face. But the girl gives a folded tiny piece of paper,
causing him confusion about what the letter is all about. At first, he is
frightened because the writing cut might be all about the order or a threat to
him, so he's scared to open it. Also, he's aware that there's a lot of telescreen
on his surroundings and many enemies are observing their actions. But after
he unfolds it, the letter says, "I LOVE YOU." That's where the overthinking
stops, and he feels relief. I have a feeling that this girl is Julia, the secret
admirer who always sneaks around, and I like how she gives her message
even though there are many people in there. It teaches me that whatever is
happening in the world, if you want something, you will fight for it and put your
dedication into making a way to connect to other people even if it's prohibited.
Like the pandemic, we can't go to our friends, loved ones, and even our family
because there are a lot of restrictions that the government implemented for
our safety, but as Filipinos, we can find a way to relieve that sense of grief.
Using technology, we can talk to them even if it is virtual, and many apps
have also been launched to create a bond with our loved ones even though
Winston has a lot of work to do but can't focus and thinks about the girl
who gives him a message. He also discovers that the thought police he

faster. I'm stunned at how the author puts a side love story in this novel. Many
people or youth nowadays do not know the true essence of love and want to
do it quickly because of the pressure, even though they are not ready. Like
me, I'm not a love expert, but I know we can give that to ourselves because it
always starts with ourselves before we can say we are ready to love another
individual.
On the other hand, Winston tries to forget her to focus on his duties,
but as far as I can see, the girl cannot erase his mind. That shows he can't
obliterate his senses and always thinks about her face. Even though it's hard
to arrange a meeting with her as, for love, they both want to make an effort to
be together, they plan how they can meet up in the community center even if
it is crowded and decide to meet at Victory Square, near the monument where
Big Brother's statue was supposed to represent Oliver Cromwell. When they
meet, I feel the freedom they achieved, even briefly. For them, it will be the
best moment of their lives because they can talk and know every detail of

BOOK REVIEW:
Nothing is easy in life. Even the love story of Winston and Julia has a
lot of sacrifices and dangers that they will take just to be together. They have
this secret location with no telescreen and are away from the party. In these
times, there are also lovers like them, and they don't want to be judged by the
those whom they call closeted, but as for love, they can do everything. I also
notice in the story that they adore the trees on that spot, but it's now cut just
for the party's benefit, which also happens in this world like before. They also
use these trees to be their landmark and fresh air, but because of greed for
money and wealth, they can destroy everything. Going back, when the lovers
get to know each other, they talk about their first impressions, and I like that
they are being honest and telling what they feel about each other at that time.
I figure that Julia likes Smith and doesn't think of any thoughts about
him. But I also understand Winston, and he is being honest, and he thinks
wrong about Julia because he doesn't trust anyone from the government, and
that party brings so much damage to their mind. I felt comforted after knowing
they have the same thoughts about the party and how much they are willing to
fight for the rights they cannot experience. Living in a world where no one
dictates your next moves is worth it. That's why I understand how they enjoy
every moment that they are doing. It feels like it is their last day on earth.
16
There is this quote that I always hear: “ Live every moment like it's your last.” I
like this line because we can apply it to everything and be who we are and
reach our full potential; we will not know what will happen next, so be it.

Privacy is something that Julia and Winston want because they want to
hide in the cruel world that they belong to. Winston rents the apartment above
Mr. Charrington's secondhand shop to have alone time with Julia. It gives
hope for them that even there are a lot of people there. Mr.Charrington is
willing to help them regain their confidence that they are not alone in their fight
and gives a helping hand to them. Both Winston and Julia have been
preparing for Hate Week at work, which has taken up a lot of their time, and
because of this, Winston has become quite sexually frustrated. I can see that
Julia is happy to return to that room, and she brings real coffee, milk, tea,
sugar, and bread, items which only Inner Party members would be privileged
to. I noticed that even the goods or food they will eat is limited, and we cannot
hide the fact that this will bring hunger and malnutrition to everyone. In this,
we also experience the need that the government impacts because they don't
properly allocate the budget, and food is not accessible for everyone, so there
The woman is singing a song you can hear through their window and
sees a mother and child, representing being a mother. Julia and Winston talk
about how married couples should usually be free to move and live peacefully
in that area. The emotions Julia feels when she starts singing a piece can also
reflect what she feels inside and how they want to live the life they want. We
also discover what Winston fears when a rat appears in their room in the hole.
Julia gets worried and tries to comfort him, but he doesn't say anything but
promises to fill the gap with sacking before they leave and assures that there

won't be any rats in the room. Winston has this trauma about this animal
every time he sees one. I also like how that rat portrays the attitude of
humans because some individuals are scared to face reality and permanently
hide and run to their dark places. They chat about the photo of St Clement's
church and a piece of history they neglected to change. After Julia leaves,
piece represents themselves, like the crystal on that coral. Winston realizes
his admiration for Julia in this chapter after sensing she is drifting away. He
enjoys being with her for the rest of his life and being able to do so sincerely

Every second, there's a lot of crime that has happened in our world; a

The writer wants to show how family is vital to our life. This part of the

BOOK REVIEW:
In life, we cannot quickly tell the true inner self of a person because it is
changing, and every person has different characteristics. The betrayal I felt in
this chapter made me furious about Mr. Charington's character. Winston and
Julia first trust him and boost their confidence to push through because they
believe there are still good individuals in that world. When Winston starts to

that whatever outside appearances we see in every person, even if they have

The world is full of surprises; we cannot tell what possible catastrophe
will happen, so even though they didn't say these phrases to each other, Julia
and Winston predict that whatever happens, as long as they are together,
they can do everything. The moment I worried for happened, and their world
stopped when they were locked up in a house with men around them,
instructing them not to move and turn back to each other. It also reveals that a
telescreen behind the mirror hears everything they say in that room.
Everything is planned at the very start when Mr. Charrington lies about that
room and admits that he is also one of the thought police. It's sad because
they dare to think everyone agrees on everything they work for. Still, people
are hiding their dark secrets to take advantage of them. As a person, if I also
experience this betrayal, it will give me trust issues and cause me not to rely
on anyone again. I will tell myself to do it entirely and not based on the small
good acts that they show. Winston seems to be appreciative, and I cannot
blame him if that's how his parents are raising him, which results in a kind guy
like him who always sees the light in everything dark in their life.

Every time they say prison, it marks on our mind that this is where they

innocent people who don't have the power to fight for their rights. Some
ignorant people are indicted on the case that they didn't do it because they
can't resist those who imprison them, and sometimes, it's all about social
situations happening on those four sides of the room. They also want to show
how the unequal treatment of prisoners looks like that is also happening in our

The party's goal is to change their perspective, not to destroy them totally.

The lies in this chapter are unbearable and make you think about what
