Book Title: 1984

Author: Geroge Orwell

Chapter Number: Chapter 1 | Chapter 1

Pages Read: Pages 2-10

Date Finished: October 30, 2023

BOOK REVIEW:

The foremost few chapters of 1984 are reserved for presenting the

significant characters and pieces of the novel. The main character, Winston,

explains the world and the war in his mind. He shows readers how society

manipulates people, and "Big Brother" watches every act they do." Orwell, the

novel's writer, also spends time on the nature of the governing body and the

four ministries controlling the population. I like how the author needs to give

more detail about these characters for us to continue reading this novel. We

need to be more translucent about our minds on the exact information. The

other reason is we can connect this story to real-life situations in these

modern times, and it is also related to the field of government.

In the middle of the chapter, they also dip into the mind of Winston's

view of reality rather than what Big Brother imposed. After he takes his Victory

cigarettes and Gin, he sees things clearly and starts to write in his journal.

The fact that Winston is making those words that can contradict the

government makes the story more exciting and hooks the readers' interest in

what will happen next. They also introduced the "New Speak," the party

3
language that seeks to eliminate freedom for the people. Orwell then

proceeds to show Winston's fear by ending the chapter with a knock at the

door and Winston accepting his fate almost blatantly as he leaves the book

plain open for anyone to see, almost in a deliberate act to get caught. Orwell,

within the chapter, makes several references to Animal Farm, the novel he

wrote before 1984, observing the 'sheep-like' characteristics of the population.

I also can't imagine living in that story, and I'm also curious about what move I

will make if I am scared of the party. Should I just be manipulated? Or be like

Winston Smith, who is willing to take risks? When he first wrote the words

"Down With Big Brother," I felt that the numerous emotions that he felt left a

mark on my mind that I should dig and dive more into the following scenarios.

BOOK REVIEW:

The phase of this part made my heart pound faster because Winston is

careless in his diary even though it will result in different consequences; there

are a lot of restrictions on the rules of the party. The ink stain on the hand of

SmithSmith makes me think about Rizal that they both use pen and paper as

a weapon to show how dirty the administration is. It also serves as a silent

4
protest to express unfiltered thoughts in that community and how they control

their expression.

The youngsters are aggressive and manipulated by the high-ups. Even

when he helps Mrs. Parsons repair the sink, her children play with a toy and a

real gun pointed at Winston; it makes me think that even though they are so

young, they were trained to safeguard the ideologies of Big Brother in

Oceania. On the other hand, Winston thinks about the eyes of O'Brien,

whether he is a friend or an enemy. I also noticed that Smith is looking for

someone who fights for the future and is selfless for the betterment of the

system. Newspeak is the 11th edition book that talks about the language in

Oceania. I also noticed that Mrs. Parsons makes sentences shorter, derived

from the book.

BOOK REVIEW:

Dreams play a big part in our lives and help us return to our tracks.

Smith visions his mother and how she sacrificed herself for him, but because

they are being manipulated, he does not remember that memory. The author

5
highlights how mothers are essential in our lives because they are willing to

do everything to make our lives easier and more comfortable. Otherwise,

there's a positive impact on how they manage people because there is

exercise. Still, as I continue reading that part, I feel sad because he wakes up

by the telescreen to participate in physical jerks. The fact that this scene was

repeatedly shown on the television screen without any commercial gives a

life-forced and manipulating effect on people because showing it to citizens

will mark them living a life full of lies and misery.

The quote "Who controls the past controls the future and who controls

the present controls the past" reminds me of the Marcos administration

because, in our era, they distort history and make it suitable to the mind of the

people so that no one can know what is true and what is not. There's also an

idea about "reality control/doublethink": it requires believing in something

opposite of what you know that is also connected to how they control their

view of the world, languages, beliefs, and history.

BOOK REVIEW:

6
In this modern time, there's a lot of fake news spreading, and many

people are blinded by these overflowing ideas that they cannot quickly identify

what is wrong and what is not, making our world more complex. I will also

connect this story. This Memory hole can vanish everything about facts that

they want to disappear and not exist in that era. We also learn that Smith

works in the records of the Ministry of Truth and re-rights history according to

what Big Brother wants. The writer also wants to reveal that some workers are

forcefully doing their jobs even though that is out of their will because they

fear punishment. The workers or even normal people stayed quiet for their

safety even though they knew dirty secrets that could help the community

improve. That's why we should salute the individuals willing to sacrifice their

lives to spit facts and straighten all the tangled.

The unknown truths that are also the book's core theme will make

Winston's and other people's minds messy because there's so much rewritten

past, and they cannot tell the differences between truth and lie. Education will

also be much affected when the teachers instruct the next generations on

what is written in the book. They will adapt to it and be crazy because they

know that 2+2=5, but after they study it again, it's now 2+2=3 because they

continually revise it. That would be what it would be like when students are

trying to learn in that era. That's why the behavior of the children in the story is

unpredictable. The:" Memory Hole" represents the desolation of the past in

exchange for fitting the current party doctrine, and the "Telescreen" means

the lack of privacy and controlled actions and movements.

BOOK REVIEW:

The whole chapter is focused on Winston's more in-depth nature of Big

Brother and the government. He also comprehends more about the New

Speak because of the linguist Syme and begins to see the world with fresh

eyes. Smith also understands that doublethink allows people to swallow

apparent lies. The removal of language and expression in that world makes

people unable not to know what they are being taught. Also, it breaks the

primary form of life and the simplest way to connect to other people and

creates a generative community.

The quote "You did not have friends nowadays, you had comrades"

gives the idea that people have become limited and unable to create friends

or relationships, showing that they are being controlled and will not trust

anyone except themselves. That's why they will not open up or share their

problems even with their family. They will think that all people will be their

enemy. The only one they will trust is the government and not even feel they

are being manipulated, and that form of governance doesn't bring peace but

chaos.

BOOK REVIEW:

The liberation to communicate your views, thoughts, and sentiments is

also prohibited. In this part, Winston starts to write in his diary secretly and

tells about his experiences with desires and sexual acts. We all know that love

will not vanish in our lives, and it's part of our life and soul. It motivates us to

continue in this world and makes us feel alive until the end. In that world, sex

should not be pleasurable but for procreation only. He also stated his

encounter with an aging "prole" prostitute in a basement kitchen was a minor

crime. Katherine, the ex-wife, was pushed to have sex with him once a week

because it was their responsibility to the party, and then ditched him when

they failed to beget a child.

The Anti-sex League and many more organizations advocate for

celibacy for both sexes. They want to remove all pressure on the sexual act,

and there's also a line in the book that if that couldn't be killed, then distort

and dirty it. We all know the government is selfish, so even in marriages, they

only want offspring for the party's service. I think it's so hard to live in that era

because it's like "living but not breathing." You will live as a hard rock with

9
no emotions, and how will we call ourselves humans if we don't feel anything

to people? Attraction and love unite us to build ourselves and live to the

fullest. It will also help our mind to think twice and see the flaws in ourselves

and what individuals we are when associating with humans because others,

our family, or even our partner will be the only ones who will be honest about

how we deal with people. They will give life advice to help us make decisions

to achieve a healthy mind.

BOOK REVIEW:

The government that promotes the well being and right of its citizens

should be the right that is worth fighting for. Winston in this chapter

understands the principles that are inside in this form of government. The

proles of that community have the strength to overthrow the party in an

instant. They also said that they need to be conscious first for them to rebel

and until after they rebel they cannot become conscious which is true they

need to open the eye of the proles to see the dirty actions and governance of

the government. We can also connect this generation that a lot of people are

10
not aware or the only thing that they see or hear are their broken promises not

the actions that bring so much trouble in society. Like in the last elections we

cannot hide that many individuals are blinded and not choose carefully the

leader that can bring so much impact and have good intentions on the

government.

I liked how the woman's being emphasized in this chapter and they are

being empowered and can also fight their rights against the party like now that

this is being tackled and they have a voice that can change their perspective

and they should not be belittled. The quote “freedom is the freedom to say two

plus two is equal to four and if that is granted everything follows' ' it shows that

even in a small step it's still a progress and if they work together and if a lot of

people are aware of their rights. What I don't like even today on the belief that

if you are slave, poor, and prole you will stay and contented with that even

though they can make a move to change their status in life and they should

believe on themselves that they can do everything even fight those capitalists

to end the torture physically, mentally and emotionally and even in all aspects

of life. They need to feel that they are not being owned by anyone and the

only one that owns them is themselves. There is a rumor that the Revolution's

founding leaders started in the middle of the 1960s. All of them had vanished

by 1970, excluding Big Brother. Three guys, identified as Jones, Aaronson,

and Rutherford, were the last to survive and were taken into custody in 1965.

Even though many people failed in the fight and Winston saw some of the

fighters show that they were mighty, it was not a hindrance to stop but to be

more prepared and keep fighting for what is suitable for all.

BOOK REVIEW:

The boldness of Winston Smith is for the betterment of not only the

present but also the future. His stroll in the neighborhood of the proles instead

of attending the evening community center shows that he is willing to do

everything to understand his surroundings. Smith encounters an older man

who he believes is confident about life before the revolution and attempts to

talk with him, but it turns out he is unqualified and spits meaningless things.

They also reveal that proles regularly participate in the lottery, as winners of

large prizes are all imaginary. That means that even though they are content

with their situation, some individuals look for change and hope that someday

their life will be comfortable when they get the prizes, but it's all a lie, and they

are being tricked.

The second time that Smith accidentally goes back to the same store

where he bought his diary, it forms in his mind that it is by luck, and he easily

trusts Mr. Charrington, the one who shows coral and a room upstairs that he

says has no telescreen because that's their room of his late wife. They also

discuss whether the buildings existed before the party took power. In this

12
section, there's something wrong with this older man because he wants to

build a connection by telling a story about the happenings in their community,

even though there are a lot of rules. On the other hand, Smith bumps into a

thought police, Julia, who he thinks is the one who is observing or spying on

him. I also feel his nervousness because even if I switch on his shoes, I will

think of multiple plans to avoid getting caught and save myself. After all, he

has plans that should not be there. The tagline "WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM

IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH" depicts how they flip the mind

and everything occurring in that society, and I'm scared every time I read

these words. This last chapter of this first part excites me, and I like how the

author makes it more exciting and the situations that we will connect not only

in that year but also in the present.

BOOK REVIEW:

Every human has a different story. We will get inspiration and think we

are lucky in this era. After the ceremony, Winston helps a girl to get up when

the girl stumbles on his face. But the girl gives a folded tiny piece of paper,

causing him confusion about what the letter is all about. At first, he is

frightened because the writing cut might be all about the order or a threat to

him, so he's scared to open it. Also, he's aware that there's a lot of telescreen

on his surroundings and many enemies are observing their actions. But after

he unfolds it, the letter says, "I LOVE YOU." That's where the overthinking

stops, and he feels relief. I have a feeling that this girl is Julia, the secret

admirer who always sneaks around, and I like how she gives her message

even though there are many people in there. It teaches me that whatever is

happening in the world, if you want something, you will fight for it and put your

dedication into making a way to connect to other people even if it's prohibited.

Like the pandemic, we can't go to our friends, loved ones, and even our family

because there are a lot of restrictions that the government implemented for

our safety, but as Filipinos, we can find a way to relieve that sense of grief.

Using technology, we can talk to them even if it is virtual, and many apps

have also been launched to create a bond with our loved ones even though

we cannot be there personally.

Winston has a lot of work to do but can't focus and thinks about the girl

who gives him a message. He also discovers that the thought police he

always saw is not his enemy but the one that can make his heart pound

14
faster. I'm stunned at how the author puts a side love story in this novel. Many

people or youth nowadays do not know the true essence of love and want to

do it quickly because of the pressure, even though they are not ready. Like

me, I'm not a love expert, but I know we can give that to ourselves because it

always starts with ourselves before we can say we are ready to love another

individual.

On the other hand, Winston tries to forget her to focus on his duties,

but as far as I can see, the girl cannot erase his mind. That shows he can't

obliterate his senses and always thinks about her face. Even though it's hard

to arrange a meeting with her as, for love, they both want to make an effort to

be together, they plan how they can meet up in the community center even if

it is crowded and decide to meet at Victory Square, near the monument where

Big Brother's statue was supposed to represent Oliver Cromwell. When they

meet, I feel the freedom they achieved, even briefly. For them, it will be the

best moment of their lives because they can talk and know every detail of

their personality, even if they live in a heartless world.

BOOK REVIEW:

Nothing is easy in life. Even the love story of Winston and Julia has a

lot of sacrifices and dangers that they will take just to be together. They have

this secret location with no telescreen and are away from the party. In these

times, there are also lovers like them, and they don't want to be judged by the

people. That's why they want to hide to protect their relationship.

A prominent example of this is the members of the LGBTQIA++ or

those whom they call closeted, but as for love, they can do everything. I also

notice in the story that they adore the trees on that spot, but it's now cut just

for the party's benefit, which also happens in this world like before. They also

use these trees to be their landmark and fresh air, but because of greed for

money and wealth, they can destroy everything. Going back, when the lovers

get to know each other, they talk about their first impressions, and I like that

they are being honest and telling what they feel about each other at that time.

I figure that Julia likes Smith and doesn't think of any thoughts about

him. But I also understand Winston, and he is being honest, and he thinks

wrong about Julia because he doesn't trust anyone from the government, and

that party brings so much damage to their mind. I felt comforted after knowing

they have the same thoughts about the party and how much they are willing to

fight for the rights they cannot experience. Living in a world where no one

dictates your next moves is worth it. That's why I understand how they enjoy

every moment that they are doing. It feels like it is their last day on earth.

16
There is this quote that I always hear: “ Live every moment like it's your last.” I

like this line because we can apply it to everything and be who we are and

reach our full potential; we will not know what will happen next, so be it.

BOOK REVIEW:

Time is essential to our human lives, so they always say, "Time is

Gold." After Julia and Winston travel back to London after their meet-up, as

lovers, they will make a way to see each other in a town with many eyes that

observe them. But they need help with different schedules and times for their

work. They also act like she blows her nose and fixes her shoelaces to

communicate with Winston because They cannot express themselves in

writing or have discussions outdoors. They both meet at irregular times in the

streets of London for several weeks.

The chapter continues to a night where they make love in an

abandoned church. While in that area, Julia opens up about her life and

shares her story with Winston. She stated that she is 26, lives in a hostel with

30 other girls, and works on novel-writing machines in the fiction department.

17
Julia was a troop leader in the Spies and was eventually selected to work in

Pornosec, a section of the Fiction Department that delivers pornography for

the proles. She loathes the party and likes outsmarting it, executing small acts

of rebellion without getting noticed. Julia very clearly comprehends the party's

guidelines on lovemaking, so she explains to Winston that depriving people of

sex affects hysteria, which the party can then change into hatred of the party's

opponents and worship of Big Brother. Winston also tells Julia about a

moment when he was on a community hike with Katharine, and he highlights

that whether he had or hadn't pushed his wife off the ridge wouldn't have

mattered because negligence in the face of the party's oppression is

unavoidable. Winston nervously adds that Julia will someday be caught and

mentions that they are dying. Still, Julia, who believes in private rebellion

against the party, advises him to stop agonizing about dying, and she

prepares for their next meeting. It's so hard to live in a world where you know

you will find your happiness and satisfy your soul, but many things restrict it,

so, in this part, I'm also unhappy about their story because it's like passing

through the hole of the needle.

BOOK REVIEW:

Privacy is something that Julia and Winston want because they want to

hide in the cruel world that they belong to. Winston rents the apartment above

Mr. Charrington's secondhand shop to have alone time with Julia. It gives

hope for them that even there are a lot of people there. Mr.Charrington is

willing to help them regain their confidence that they are not alone in their fight

and gives a helping hand to them. Both Winston and Julia have been

preparing for Hate Week at work, which has taken up a lot of their time, and

because of this, Winston has become quite sexually frustrated. I can see that

Julia is happy to return to that room, and she brings real coffee, milk, tea,

sugar, and bread, items which only Inner Party members would be privileged

to. I noticed that even the goods or food they will eat is limited, and we cannot

hide the fact that this will bring hunger and malnutrition to everyone. In this,

we also experience the need that the government impacts because they don't

properly allocate the budget, and food is not accessible for everyone, so there

are so many individuals affected by this kind of scenario.

The woman is singing a song you can hear through their window and

sees a mother and child, representing being a mother. Julia and Winston talk

about how married couples should usually be free to move and live peacefully

in that area. The emotions Julia feels when she starts singing a piece can also

reflect what she feels inside and how they want to live the life they want. We

also discover what Winston fears when a rat appears in their room in the hole.

Julia gets worried and tries to comfort him, but he doesn't say anything but

promises to fill the gap with sacking before they leave and assures that there

19
won't be any rats in the room. Winston has this trauma about this animal

every time he sees one. I also like how that rat portrays the attitude of

humans because some individuals are scared to face reality and permanently

hide and run to their dark places. They chat about the photo of St Clement's

church and a piece of history they neglected to change. After Julia leaves,

Winston looks at the paperweight philosophically and connects how each

piece represents themselves, like the crystal on that coral. Winston realizes

his admiration for Julia in this chapter after sensing she is drifting away. He

enjoys being with her for the rest of his life and being able to do so sincerely

and willingly, like in the past.

BOOK REVIEW:

20
Every second, there's a lot of crime that has happened in our world; a

lot of people vanish, and we cannot tell if they are alive or not. Based on the

news that I have seen, some government institutions also take the lives of

other people if they are no longer beneficial or if it can affect their names and

the way they manage people. Like Syme in this chapter, he disappeared, and

his name is no longer printed on the chess committee, which indicates that he

never existed in that world. On the other hand, workers are busy preparing for

Hate Week, and a new poster of an Eurasian soldier, outnumbering Big

Brother, has been plastered all over London. Workers spend additional hours

arranging telescreen shows, seminars, and parades. Julia and Winston are

also busy producing scary pamphlets and misinterpreting news articles for

speeches. Prole also composed and performed a piece called The Hate

Song. I feel sorry for the people because they volunteered on different tasks

for that coming event even though there's no certainty on that, and they didn't

know that it could be a trick for them to be abused.

Winston continues his meetings with Julia in the secret room above Mr

Charrington's shop, and, as a result, he stops his Gin addiction. They also

think that the only way to overthrow the Party is to team up with the people in

the Party but secretly against it, so Winston thinks about O'Brien because he

feels the connection. I also agree with Julia's opinion of Winston because if

they are experiencing that circus, I will only trust myself. They continued to

share theories about The Party. Julia believes no war is happening, and it is

instead a scare tactic. Winston thinks that O'Brian secretly hates The Party,

and Julia believes the Party News is made up of lies. Winston eventually

21
decides that nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is

always right. The Party imposes itself on those who need help understanding

its worldview and digesting it mindlessly.

BOOK REVIEW:

The scenes in this chapter make the reader jump to different

conclusions about the characters because of the unexplained behavior of

O'Brien. Winston is walking down a corridor and starts conversing with him.

O'Brien references Syme, who was abolished, but Winston takes this as a

code word and believes that he and O'Brien are now accomplices. In this

section, O'Brien makes way for him to meet Winston; that is why he wishes to

give Winston a copy of the 10th edition of the Newspeak dictionary so he can

update two obsolete words in his recent article.

Winston assumes this as a sign of a conspiracy and is confident that

he has attained the outer edges of it. He had advanced from thought to words

and from words to actions. When he understood what O'Brien was alluding to,

22
he felt that he was signing his death warrant. It excites me more about what

will happen next because I'm curious about this O'Brien.

BOOK REVIEW:

The writer wants to show how family is vital to our life. This part of the

book gives us a hint, even in the first few chapters, that Winston's family will

somehow help him go back and rethink the situations in that world. I am also

curious about what happened because they did not state Winston's story

about his family. I also want Julia and Winston to end up together. Still, they

both think their relationship is negligible because the party's manipulation

somehow affects their thoughts and feelings. But I'm hoping that there's a

happy ending to this story. Even though I see some cracks in their

relationship, they are still together and communicating well.

Winston recounts his experiences as a child. As a young adult, I also

overlooked the small details that my mother did to me when I was a child, but

as time went by, I realized that those acts would mark my mind. It makes my

eyes teary when Winston dreams about stealing a piece of chocolate from his

23
sister and runs away. When he comes back, his mother and sister have

vanished. Winston cherished his family, and it showed that it will make his life

complete every time he thinks about them. I also see what kind of mother

Winston has because she raised him well, resulting in an intelligent guy who

wants to change his community.

BOOK REVIEW:

It commences with Julia and Winston entering O'Brien's house.

Winston's introspections are rushing through his senses, and he is trying to

explain why he came to see O'Brien, as he has a lot of doubts. I'm amazed at

how O'Brien controls the telescreen; Julia and Winston make sure that if it's

off, it will be a sign that O'Brien is one of them, and I know that Winston has

doubts about this guy. Still, his gut wants changes, so he teams up with them

so that they will plan and have associates on how they will fight the party.

They confess to O'Brien that they are thought criminals and want in on the

secret organization.

24
After O'Brien gets their heart to reveal all their moves and secrets

against the party, he describes the party as not easily destroyed. Winston is

brave to face countless opponents just for the sake of the future. He starts

questioning Winston to discover his weaknesses and finds out his love for

Julia is one of them. It shows that they have this unexplained motive to them.

He also highlights that the Brotherhood is highly secretive, and no one can

know who is in and out. It is like aiming without a target; they don't know

where to start and move. In this part, I'm hoping that they will achieve the

changes they want, and even though O'Brien's characteristics are

unexplained, he will help the main characters in their fight.

The author wants the reader to visualize the scenarios happening in

that world. The chapter starts by declaring that Oceania is, and has

continually been, at War with Eastasia and that Eurasia is an ally. The

obsessiveness created by this announcement causes Winston to work long

hours to rectify all of the references to Oceania's War with Eurasia. He works

around the clock and eventually gets the day off, which he spends in the room

above Mr. Charrington's shop. As I observe in these scenes, war promotes

power and control and resets everything, including their minds.

As the scene is intense, they show how social classes differ from each

other, which divides societies into High (Inner Party), Middle (Outer Party),

and Low classes (proles), whose purposes are conflicting. The Endless

Border describes how the war between the three states isn't a victory but

creates fear that makes it seem analytical to concentrate authority in the

hands of the High class. I like his dedication and sweetness to how he will

make Julia open her eyes to something that she is unaware of because when

Julia walks through the door, Winston is reading. She is glad he has the book

but is not interested in reading it herself. So Winston insists that Julia listen as

he reads to her instead of her reading it for herself.

To guarantee obedience, the Party regulates access to history to keep

residents from acknowledging that they are not better off than in previous

eras. We all know that narrative impacts our lives because it helps us check

progress and study past events and problems to prevent them in the present

and future. Chapter 1 of the book finalizes by mentioning how all Party

26
members are trained in doublethink- where one simultaneously recognizes

and forgets when convenient and tells intentional lies while genuinely

believing in them. The proles had intellectual freedom because they were

considered too stupid to rebel. It shows that those who think small are easily

controlled and manipulated.

BOOK REVIEW:

In life, we cannot quickly tell the true inner self of a person because it is

changing, and every person has different characteristics. The betrayal I felt in

this chapter made me furious about Mr. Charington's character. Winston and

Julia first trust him and boost their confidence to push through because they

believe there are still good individuals in that world. When Winston starts to

realize and observe, everything seems perfect in his surroundings, even

Julia's beauty and how perfect she is. The author also wants us to recognize

that whatever outside appearances we see in every person, even if they have

flaws, as long as they have a good heart and are beautiful inside, they are

perfect.

27
The world is full of surprises; we cannot tell what possible catastrophe

will happen, so even though they didn't say these phrases to each other, Julia

and Winston predict that whatever happens, as long as they are together,

they can do everything. The moment I worried for happened, and their world

stopped when they were locked up in a house with men around them,

instructing them not to move and turn back to each other. It also reveals that a

telescreen behind the mirror hears everything they say in that room.

Everything is planned at the very start when Mr. Charrington lies about that

room and admits that he is also one of the thought police. It's sad because

they dare to think everyone agrees on everything they work for. Still, people

are hiding their dark secrets to take advantage of them. As a person, if I also

experience this betrayal, it will give me trust issues and cause me not to rely

on anyone again. I will tell myself to do it entirely and not based on the small

good acts that they show. Winston seems to be appreciative, and I cannot

blame him if that's how his parents are raising him, which results in a kind guy

like him who always sees the light in everything dark in their life.

Every time they say prison, it marks on our mind that this is where they

detained prisoners, but we do not know that behind those bars, there are

innocent people who don't have the power to fight for their rights. Some

ignorant people are indicted on the case that they didn't do it because they

can't resist those who imprison them, and sometimes, it's all about social

status. I appreciate how the author wants us to be enlightened about the

situations happening on those four sides of the room. They also want to show

how the unequal treatment of prisoners looks like that is also happening in our

world.

Winston dreams about the field in the countryside in what he calls the

"Golden Country." There is a girl in that scene who makes a reckless action,

and he describes it with a dark hair color. He awakes by the phrase

"Shakespeare," and a loud whistle from the telescreen is their wake-up call.

They performed mandatory morning exercises that make me think it is a tactic

to play their minds; Winston tries to remember when Oceania hasn't been at

warfare and fails. Winston wants to stay on his ideologies, but staying in that

cell messes up his mind. He recalls harboring as a child with his family in a

Tube station during an air raid with an intoxicated old man who kept

reiterating that they "didn't ought to 'have trusted the buggers." According to

the Party, however, Oceania has been battling Eurasia and has united with

Eastasia. Winston learns that to recall differently includes thoughtcrime. He

consolidates on the view of doublethink, a Newspeak word denoting "reality

control," the capability to simultaneously acknowledge contradictory opinions

when it's ideologically appropriate. Winston tries reflecting on the year

29
Winston first listened to Big Brother and discovers that the past has been

destroyed, not merely changed. He does not even recall when he first heard

the word INGSOC, which denotes Newspeak for the motion formerly known

as English Socialism. Winston's situation in prison is heartbreaking because

we cannot tell what will happen next in his case, and it is unpredictable.

BOOK REVIEW:

After reading this chapter, I didn't know what to feel because, in this

section, you will feel the numbness in the torture they do to Winston. The little

hope that I held that there would be a good result on their actions slowly

disappeared after he met O'Brien. Winston also understands the true nature

of the Brotherhood and O'Brien. Like Winston and Julia, living in that cruel

world turns your life upside down. Even if they don't deserve that treatment,

they still undergo that kind of nightmare.

I salute how Winston stands brave and doesn't answer the

interrogation or the questions they throw at him and keeps on fighting on his

principles because he thinks that he can be an answer to all possible changes

30
that can happen in the world if he keeps fighting. As the story continues, the

party makes statements of Winston twist, and they make all of his ideologies a

lie while he is suffering from the torture and manipulations that they do. I know

they will not stop humiliating until Winston does not give in to the party. I also

understand that even he doesn't want to let them win, but when our minds are

twisted, and physical features are abused, we will not think straight. It also

added that his friend O'Brien is behind this torture and suffering. Winston is

taken to a room at the Ministry of Love, where he is questioned regarding his

confession and his sentence. The fierce personality O'Brien clarifies that the

facility's goal is to heal and restore Winston's mind, not to force confessions.

The party's goal is to change their perspective, not to destroy them totally.

The lies in this chapter are unbearable and make you think about what

kind of life they are living. Winston is being reintegrated into learning,

understanding, and acceptance by O'Brien. They also state that the Party

seeks absolute power for power's sake over all individuals, so they are

nothing unless they merge with the Party. They must go with what the Party

wants and have no choice but to follow all their practices. Winston urges that

the spirit of Man will dominate the Party. But O'Brien states that Winston has

been abused, violated, and degraded. Winston protests that there is one

degradation he has not suffered: he has not betrayed Julia.

In this part of the quote, they are interested exclusively in power,

showing that they are undefeatable and do everything to continue

manipulating people to acquire what they want. The poster "Slavery is

Freedom" is entirely the opposite of what is right, and they don't want people

to own their decisions and be the king of their thoughts because if that

happens, they will no longer experience that kind of treatment. It is also true

that the quote "My body, My Rules" is accurate because we need to be

independent in our sentiments to grow, and our minds will not be limited. I'm

near the end of this chapter, and I'm sad because I thought there would be

justice for everything, but it seems like Winston accepts his fate and absorbs

what O'Brien said.

When they start to accept the party, it draws an illustration in our minds

that they look like puppets of whatever the party wants. They will use their

entire force to do whatever they command. I know that the interrogation of

Winston can bring so many changes to his characteristics and the continued

telling lies of O'Brien, making him think that "TWO AND TWO MAKE FIVE."

As a person aware of what is right, we know that it is entirely wrong, but when

an individual is being manipulated, we cannot notice this but accept that it is

correct. They are people in this real world who are aware of the wrongs but

still blind and don't want to speak on what is right and follow and mind their

business not to make trouble.

Winston loses focus, and It looks like he is a newborn but an individual

who supports the party. Even though he changes his mind, he still cannot hide

his true self, which is love from Julia. His true intentions keep disturbing him,

and he thinks about what happened to Julia and still needs to save her. I'm

also curious about what is truly happening to Julia, and I saw Winston's pure

heart toward Julia even though he is now—obeying the party. I know that

Winston is aware of this wrongdoing but will remain wrong. Ultimately, they

are not free, but I know that that small progress is still progress toward making

changes.

BOOK REVIEW:

The speculations about the room 101 situation were now answered

when O'Brien took Winston to that room. It's okay to face our fears because it

is a significant achievement for us when we overcome them, but when it is

used to torture an individual, it is not good because it uses force on someone

who is not ready to meet that anxiety. O'Brien raises a cage containing two

giant, hungry rats and a type of door that can be suited straight up against

Winston's face. O'Brien carries the cell close and tells Winston that when he

places the cage in place and opens the door, the rats will consume his face.

He comprehends that to rescue himself, he must position a body between

himself and the rats, which must be Julia's. He screams frantically, "Do it to

Julia! Not me!" O'Brien, pleased, removes the cage.

I understand why he shouts Julia as prey because when you are in that

position, you will not think about anyone else, and the only person he will

consider is the person he always relies on. The room instructs Winston that

he would be willing to sacrifice anything, dignity, and loyalty to escape that

34
fear in the facade of his most extraordinary fear. Put another way, he is ready

to offer everything that makes him himself, his spirit and heart, to save himself

from his worries. Through that fear, O'Brien and the Party take control of

Winston's mind, and he will never die as an individual.

BOOK REVIEW:

In this last chapter, I want to highlight what the author wants the reader

to see in this novel, to connect and show different emotions on every branch

we will accomplish. The main character's true feelings help us communicate in

the story. In this last chapter, I'm convinced that Winston is now really part of

the party when he couldn't recognize the fallacy behind the news. Winston

acquires a brief report from the Ministry of Plenty as the telescreen's music

ends. The limit for bootlaces beneath the Tenth Three-Year Plan has been

exceeded by 98%. Winston is left with a feeling of threat and an

undifferentiated thrill. In that environment, it feels like Winston follows the flow

of that dangerous world.

35
When the author describes Julia's appearance, they illustrate her face

as having a longer blemish and dull skin; her waist has stiffened. Her skin has

a different texture than before. Seated between two iron chairs, Julia admits to

having back stabbed him. He doesn't seem to care that Julia also suffers,

despite his attempts to convey that he is prepared to threaten others to save

himself. I can't bear why their love is fading because of the trauma they both

experienced. Even though they didn't emphasize the traumas that Julia also

sorrows, I am glad she is still alive even though she suffers a lot when the

police know about their relationship and see that she has been betrayed by

her loved one.

People and a picture of Big Brother surround Winston. He is still determining

the news coming from the front, wondering if it will be a victory or failure. He

has returned to the Ministry of Love with tears dashing down his nose as he

acknowledges Big Brother with a smile that Winston hasn't recognized for

forty years, but now he loves Big Brother. Even though Winston didn't get the

success they wanted and completely absorbed the ideologies of that party, I

know from his heart that Winston, who is brave, will not fade away and will

continue to fight for a better future.
