HW3 Solution

This document contains two homework problems from a reinforced concrete design course. Problem 1 asks students to calculate the factored uniform load for a beam supporting a slab. Problem 2 asks students to find the maximum factored shear and bending moments in different members of a concrete frame under various load combinations using ACI 318 standards. The instructor provides the load details and member dimensions needed to solve the problems.

CVE 313: Reinforced Concrete Design
Prof. Tabsh Homework No. 3

Problem 1:
In addition to the self-weight, the floor shown below is subjected to service superimposed dead
load of 3 kPa and live load of 5 kPa. Determine the factored uniform load for the beam along
gridline 3 (units = kN/m) if the slab thickness is 200 mm, beam width is 300 mm and beam depth
portion below the slab is 400 mm. Assume normal weight concrete is used (γ = 24 kN/m3).
Beam width = 300 mm
Superimposed dead load = 3 kPa Beam depth below slab = 400 mm
Live load = 5 kPa Beam
Slab width==200
thickness 300 mm

Problem 2:
A reinforced concrete frame is subjected to 5 kN/m nominal uniform dead load and 10 kN/m
nominal uniform live load along BC, plus an ultimate lateral triangular wind load along AB with
maximum intensity of 15 kN/m at A, acting either from left-to-right or from right-to-left.

Use the ACI 318 load combinations to find:
a) Maximum absolute factored shear in member AB.
b) Maximum absolute factored bending moment in member AB.
c) Maximum absolute factored shear in member BC.
d) Maximum factored positive bending moment in member BC.
e) Maximum factored negative moment in member BC.
