a) Determine the location of the neutral axis (𝑦̅) from the bottom as a reference line
b) Evaluate the moment of inertia (Itotal) of the section
c) Evaluate the shearing stresses in different locations at top, bottom surfaces, junction
of web and flange (A, B) and neutral axis in Figure 1.
d) Establishing a sketch of the shear stress profile of a beam from the top to the bottom
e) Evaluate the maximum shear stress in the beam if the wide-flange beam is subjected
to a shear of V = 50 kN.

Determine the average shear stress developed in the nails within region AB of the beam which
is shown in Figure 3.The nails are located on each side of the beam and are spaced 100 mm
apart. Each nail has a diameter of 4 mm.Take P = 5 kN.

An element in plane stress is subjected to stresses x = 50 MPa and xy = 42 MPa (see figure).
It is known that one of the principal stresses equals 55 Mpa in tension.
(a) Determine the stress y.
(b) Determine the other principal stress and the orientation of the principal planes, then show
the principal stresses on a sketch of a properly oriented element.
