WHAT IS WORKPLACE COMMUNICATION?

Workplace communication is more than just simple conversations. It is when employees or

businesses communicate ideas, strategies, problems or goals through different modes or mediums.
Effective communication is an important aspect that incorporates a company’s success. It not only
prevents misunderstandings and conflicts but also provide a good environment that encourages
employees to openly explore creative ideas, promote transparency, establish accountability and
effectively work together to get the job done.

WORKPLACE SETTING

a. Obtaining and conveying information

It is important that any information gathered is obtained from relevant and appropriate
sources. The sources used must first be verified as credible before the information can be
disseminated. Moreover, information can be gathered through active listening to
supervisors or colleagues and taking notes whilst in a conference or a meeting. Doing this
will not only keep important matters on record but also will be useful for future references.

In terms of conveying your ideas or information, there are many restrictions and/or
what-not-to-do’s in a workplace setting. First thing to consider is how you would need to
convey the information – what mode should you use? What language is acceptable? Is the
context appropriate? And what steps should you and others follow in order to clearly
understand and absorb your message?

Next is to always be mindful of how you convey the information. Always use
appropriate, respectful, and effective non-verbal messages as it can have a huge impact on
how others will perceive you as the communicator and most importantly how important
your information is.

b. Participating in workplace meetings and discussions

Meetings and discussions are where communication happens. It is important to make
sure that all information are delivered clearly and is well-absorbed/listened to. This means
that active participation is observed and that those who speak do so uninterrupted.
Opinions and concerns discussed in meetings need to be focused and based on the desired
outcome/s – i.e., all in accordance to the meeting’s purpose and agenda.
