1) The document is a module from a General Physics 1 course covering Newton's second law of motion, scalar products, and work. It includes definitions, example problems and solutions, and a self-assessment quiz on these topics. 2) Newton's second law states that force equals mass times acceleration (F=ma). Scalar products determine the magnitude of the component of one vector in the direction of another. Work is the product of the applied force and the distance moved in the direction of the force. 3) Example problems apply these concepts to calculate accelerations from given forces and masses, scalar products, and work done by constant forces over a distance. Module 5: 2ND Newton’s Law of Motion, Dot or
Scalar Product and Work

LEARNING 1. Apply Newton’s 2nd Law and Kinematics to obtain quantitative and
qualitative conclusions about the velocity and acceleration of one or more
OBJECTIVES bodies.
2. Calculate the dot or scalar product.
3. Determine the work done by a force acting on a system.

DISCUSSION

LAW OF ACCELERATION
 An object accelerates because a force acted upon on it
 F = ma
o F = Force (N)
o m = mass (kg)
o a = acceleration (m/s²)
 The unit to measure force is the Newton (N). 1 Newton is the force required to accelerate 1 kg
by 1 m/s²
PROBLEM 1. What constant net force will give a 2.00 kg object an acceleration of 5.00 m/s²?
G– m = 2.00 kg
a = 5.00 m/s²
R – force
E – F = ma
S – F = (2.00 kg)(5.00 m/s²)
F = 10 kg.m/s² or 10 N
A – The force needed to accelerate the object is 10 N.
PROBLEM 2. A net force of 90.0 N acts on a 60.0 kg ice skater. What is the acceleration?
G – F = 90.0 N
m = 60.0 kg
R–a
E – a = F/m
S – a = 90.0 N/60.0 kg

EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE
a = 1.50 m/s²
A – The acceleration of the skater is 1.50 m/s².
MASS VS. WEIGHT
 MASS – Measure of an object’s inertia
 WEIGHT – Effect of the gravity on the mass of the object
 w = mg
o w = weight (N)
o m = mass (kg)
o g = acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s²)

PROBLEM 1. A jar weighs 5.00 N. What is its mass?

G – w = 5.00 N
g = 9.8 m/s²
R – mass
E – m = w/g
S – m = 5.00 N/ 9.8 m/s²
m = 0.51 kg
A – The mass of the jar is 0.51 kg.
PROBLEM 2. An 80.0 kg weighs 765 N on top of the mountain. Calculate the acceleration due to gravity on
the mountain?

G – m = 80.0 kg
w = 765 N
R–g
E – g = w/m
S – g = 765 N/80.0 kg
g = 9.56 m/s²
A – The acceleration due to gravity of the mountain is 9.56 m/s².

WORK
 Done only when a constant force applied on an object, causes the object to move in the same
direction as the force applied
 W = Fd
o W = Work done (Joule)
o F = Force (Newton)
o D = distance (meter)

EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE
 SI Unit for Work is JOULE (J)
PROBLEM 1. You are helping to push your mother’s heavy shopping cart with a force of 50 N for 200
m. What is amount of work done?
G – F = 50 N
d = 200 m
R–W
E – W = Fd
S – W = (50 N)(200 m)
W = 10,000 J
A – The amount of work done is 10,000 Joules.
PROBLEM 2. Suppose you pull your schoolbag with a force of 30 N and an angle of 60° to the
ground to your classroom 20 m away. How much work did you accomplish?
G – F = 30 N
Ɵ = 60°
d = 20 m
R–W
E – W = Fdcos Ɵ
S – W = (50 N)(200 m)(cos60)
W = 300 J
A – The amount of work accomplished is 300 Joules.
