Essay Techniques
4 Sentence Introduction Rule
Sentence 1: States the question along with your opinion on whether you agree or disagree
Sentence 2: A brief general statement on why you agree / disagree
Sentence 3: Specific reasons why you agree / disagree. (For example, three or four themes
from the text studied)
Sentence 4: Relate back to the question For these reasons

Body Paragraphs
S Topic Sentence / Thesis Statement tell the marker what the paragraph will be about
with reference to the essay question
T Technique name and briefly describe the technique used
E Example quote from the text to support your statement
E Effect state the effect the use of this technique has on the responder
L Link link your idea back to the main essay topic

The Conclusion
Sentence 1: Restate the thesis or main argument of your essay
Sentence 2: Restate your key points to prove this assertion
Sentence 3: Give a final example or quotation that pulls your discussion together or makes
your most important point
Sentence 4: There are a number of possible ways to end depending on your strengths and
taste. Here are a few possible ends:
a) Use a dramatic or emotional final sentence end with a flourish
b) Use a rhetorical question tie back to your reader
c) A final insight
