Introduction
Early in the COVID-19 pandemic in Philippines, people started to experience
economic instability. Some cities and municipalities were on lockdowns, companies were
also having
COVID-19 affects different people in different ways. The economic and social
disruption caused by the pandemic is devastating: most people are at risk of falling into
extreme poverty.
In response, people began cultivating gardens. Without the means to earn an income
during lockdowns, many are unable to feed themselves and their families. If you want to
make a thriving garden, you will need to use the right fertilizer.
Fertilizer, is natural or artificial substance containing the chemical elements that
improve growth and productiveness of plants. Fertilizers enhance the natural fertility of the
soil or replace chemical elements taken from the soil by previous crops. (

The different types of fertilizers include: Inorganic fertilizer- Nitrogen fertilizer,
Phosphorus fertilizer. Organic fertilizers- Agricultural waste, livestock manure, municipal
sludge. (https://byjus.com/biology/fertilizers/)
Inorganic Fertilizer, which is also called synthetic fertilizer, is made artificially and
contain synthetic chemicals. Organic Fertilizer on the other hand is produced naturally and is
derived from organic sources.
The use of manure and compost as fertilizers is probably almost as old as agriculture.
Many traditional farming systems still rely on these sustainable fertilizers, and their use is
vital to the productivity of certified organic farms, in which synthetic fertilizers are not
permitted.
Due to the pandemic, almost all products increased in price so that it is not easy to
buy fertilizer from the market and in order to meet the growing demand and efficiently cope
with volatilities in food production and prices we can make use of waste materials in our
kitchen like waste vegetables and fruits convert it to organic fertilizers.
Purpose of the Study
The study focuses on the effectiveness of homemade organic fertilizers out of wastes
from vegetables and fruit peelings in improving plants’ healthy growth. Specifically, this
study sought answers to the following questions:
1. How fast did the plants treated with the home made fertilizer grow than the plants
not treated?
2. Do the plants with the home made fertilizer show healthier signs than the other
plants?
3. Will this fertilizer help with the waste management of the person who’ll make it?
Methods
The study only covers the usage and potentials of carrot peels, banana peels, potato
peels, and sayote peels and other vegetables like cabbage, tomatoes as fertilizers. These are
commonly found in the kitchen as wastes, and from the market. The researchers used and
observed the aglaonema plants as samples. In making the fertilizer, the researchers collected
carrot peels, banana peels, potato peels, and sayote peels other vegetables like cabbage,
tomatoes.
The collected materials were soaked in water for 24 hours to eliminate the juices and
to soften it. After soaking, drain the soaked materials and dry under the sun. It should be fully
dried and crispy ready to be crushed. Using a grinder or a mortar and pestle we start to grind
or pound the dried vegetables and fruit peels until it becomes fine. We have now a pulverized
homemade fertilizer out of waste vegetable and fruit peelings ready to be used or applied to
the plants.
One pot was used for the experimental and one pot for the controlled.
Results
The following are the results of this study: Wastes from Vegetables, and Fruits, as
Natural Fertilizer for Plants.
We applied only one teaspoon of the homemade fertilizer once a week and we
observed its growth for two weeks. Due to time constraints we only had a brief observation
with regards to the condition of the Aglaonema plants we used as sample.
During the first week we noticed a difference in the appearance of the aglaonema
plant especially on the leaves. The one which the homemade fertilizer was applied show a
little bit shiny leaves and brighter color as compared to the plant without fertilizer. In the
second week the leaves of the plants were already bright and shiny. The plant treated with the
homemade fertilizer showed healthier signs as compared to the one which was not treated.
A slight difference in the size of the plant was observed. The one treated with the
homemade fertilizer grew by 2 centimeters while the one which was not treated with the
fertilizer showed only a small growth.
Discussion
This study entitled “Wastes from Vegetables and Fruits, as Natural Fertilizer for
Plants” covers how the homemade fertilizer made from carrot peels, banana peels, potato
peels, and sayote peels and other vegetables like cabbage, tomatoes are used as fertilizers.
These are kitchen wastes. Some were also secured from the market during “tabo”. The
researchers observed the plants that were applied with the fertilizer and plants without
fertilizer within almost 2 weeks to know the effect of the fertilizer.
In making the fertilizers, the researchers collected carrot peels, banana peels, potato
peels, and sayote peels other vegetables like cabbage, tomatoes. By doing so, making
homemade fertilizer help with the waste management of the person who’ll make it.
Conclusion
The purpose of this study, was to determine the effectiveness of a homemade fertilizer
out of waste specifically carrot peels, banana peels, potato peels, and sayote peels and other
vegetables like cabbage, tomatoes.
Now, here are the conclusions the researchers have made:
1. Applying fertilizer in the soil affects the growth of plants.
2. Making fertilizer out of our food waste helps with our waste management. We can also
save money, as we won’t have to spend any. Just time and effort.
3. Organic fertilizers like our intervention, improve the fertility of the soil and safe to use.
4. The collection of the ingredients from food residues and the making of the fertilizer is not
difficult, it only takes a few minutes to prepare them all together for soaking and preparing
them for sun-drying.
5. The plants with the home made fertilizer show healthier signs than the other plants.
