Properties of Matter
Introduction
The definition of matter is something that has mass and takes up space. The process of matter,
which makes up all physical structures, is readily observable property of matter. Physical properties are
characteristics of matter that are unrelated to its chemical composition. Physical attributes include things
like density, color, hardness, melting temperatures, and conductivity. “Properties of matter” refers to any
attribute that can be measured, including an object’s density, color, mass, length, malleability, melting
point, odor, temperature, etc. Our objective is to be able to define and identify the properties of matter,
and can define and identify the given data.
Procedure
Each group is composed of six members . Cleanliness must be observed before and after the
experiment. Each samples or materials must be ready before proceeding to the experiment. This
materials are the following: baking soda, table salt, styrofoam beads, fine sand, iron filings , alum,
weighing scale, matchsticks, magnets, watch glass, petri dish, graduated cylinder, beaker, test tube, and
a magnifying glass.
To measure the weight put a tablespoon of each substance in a watch glass and measure its
weight on a digital weighing scale. (Don’t forget to subtract the initial weight of the watch glass).
Examine each substance’s color, odor, and texture. Always remember to never inhale directly by placing
the substance under your nose. Just wait a little while for the air above it toward your nose. Use your
hands on feeling the substance’s texture. Use a magnifying glass to describe the particle size of each
sample. Place a magnet near the sample to observe its magnetic property. To test the flammability, light
a matchstick (or a torch lighter); flammability is observed when the substance easily catches fire,
otherwise, it’s not. Next, is testing the substance’s solubility, to perform this you need to prepare six test
tubes with 5ml of water. Place the test tubes in a rack then add a pinch of each sample. Gently swirl the
test tube and observe if the samples are dissolved in water. The last step is to record all your
observations in a table.

Guide Questions:
1. What are some of the physical properties you were able to take note of in this activity?
- Some of the physical properties that I were able to take a known are: mass, odor, texture, particle
size ,magnetism, solubility, and mass of the materials used
2. Which among the given physical properties are dependent on the amount of matter? Which ones are
independent?
- Overall, the dependent physical property is mass, while the independent physical properties are:
magnetism, flammability, density, and solubility.
3. Among the given properties you observed, why is flammability not considered as a physical
property/y
- Flammability is not a physical property. It is a chemical change or the one that can be observed when a
substance changes into something else.
4. Based on the activity, how will you differentiate physical form chemical properties?
- You can measure and observe physical properties without needing to make any chemical changes to a
substance. So, things like color, melting point, boiling point, density, hardness, and so on are all physical
properties. Chemical properties can only be measured and observed by making changes to the substance
on an atomic/molecular scale by forming or breaking chemical bonds. So, something like the heat of
combustion can only be measured by combusting the substance. These are chemical properties.
Conclusion
This experiment really open the minds of our group. Although i was not present on the first day
of the experiment , I’m glad that they told me about experiment after the class period our group made
mistakes especially antonym the data . But after few correction , our group managed to catch up .
