1. INTRODUCTION

The crycooler cools the heat shields inside the magnet, thereby reducing the helium boil-off rate.

The cryocooler consists of the following four parts:


- Compressor.
- Transformer for compressor (not for the USA).
- Helium gas lines and RF feedthroughs.
- Coldhead (part of magnet assembly).

The compressor is cooled by water, either open loop or closed loop.

2. INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

2.1. COOLANT REQUIREMENTS

Quality : potable tap water


pH : 6.0 - 8.0
CaCO3 : < 75 ppm

Note:
The hospital should be warned of the possible risks of connecting the compressor to a cold water
distribution system. A failure of this system will result in a shutdown of the compressor which will cause
increased helium boil-off.

2.2. CABLE LENGTHS

Compressor - Transformer :4m


Compressor - Coldhead : 20 m (helium gas lines)
Compressor - Water connection : 5 m (total water hose length 12 m)

The helium gas lines are made of soft cupper, which can be easy bend.
Minimum bend radius : 457 mm without a tube bender
: 57 mm when using a tube bender

The two helium gas lines (supply & return) are the same.

2.3. CONNECTION ITEMS DELIVERED BY PMS-BEST

With the compressor of the crycooler the following items for connecting the water supply and return line
are delivered:
- 12 metre nylon water hose, 1/2 inch outer diameter.
- 2 compression fittings for 1/2 inch nylon water hose.
- 2 hose couplings, 1/2 inch outer diameter.

2.4. INSTALLATION NOTES

The transformer for the compressor is a wall mounted unit.

3. SPECIFICATIONS

3.1. COMPRESSOR SPECIFICATIONS

Cooling water inlet temperature : 4oC - 21oC


Cooling water outlet temperature : maximum 40oC
Cooling water pressure * : 205 kPa - 690 kPa
Water flow : minimum 5.7 l/min
Pressure drop at minimal flow : 100 kPa
Water Chiller cooling capacity : 5.1 kW

*) The lowest inlet pressure can be 300 kPa when short connections to the water supply are used.

4. PREVIOUS SYSTEMS

4.1. INTRODUCTION

Systems delivered before November 1996 have other helium gas lines.

These systems have: two He gas lines for supply, instead of one
two He gas lines for return, instead of one
RF feedthrough couplings, instead of RF feedthrough clamps

4.2. CABLE LENGTHS

Compressor - RF feedthrough : 15 m (He gas lines outside RF Enclosure)


RF feedthrough - Coldhead : 10 m (He gas lines inside RF Enclosure)

4.3. INSTALLATION NOTES

If a system has to be moved, it is possible the He gas lines get damaged or can not be used anymore.
He gas line inside 10 m: 4522 150 12251
He gas line outside 15 m: 4522 150 12261

It is possible to replace the He gas lines by the new type of He gas lines.
He gas line 20 m: 4522 150 15771
RF feedthrough clamp: 4522 150 15781
In this case it is also possible to use the 10m or 15m He gas lines instead of the 20m He gas lines.
