The automotive industry and their suppliers normally use zinc coated plates.
Zinc starts melting at approx. 420°C and evaporates at approx. 906°C. These characteristics have a bad influence on the
welding process because the evaporation of the zinc takes place before the melting of the base material. This can lead to
porosities, incomplete fusion, cracks and an unstable arc.
Therefore it is favourable to induce less heat to avoid partial melting of the base material. That’s why the utilization of filler
metals based on copper is an alternative. In this regard we are talking about a brazing process which utilizes a welding
apparatus. The most commonly used alloys are CuSi3Mn1 (FONTARGEN A 202 M) and CuAl8 (FONTARGEN
A 2115/8 M).

Laser brazing of Tank opening
Seat rail the roof joint

Only a slight combustion of the zinc-coat occurs and thus the corrosion resistance is preserved.
Reduced distortion.
Easy finishing of the brazing seam.
There are various applications in the field of passenger car bodies. Besides the MIG-brazing, laser- and plasma processes
are applied.
