ICS for Windows 98 SE

Internet Connection Sharing for

Windows 98 SE
Before you set up ICS, you must configure the computer that will host the Internet
connection. There can be only one ICS host on the network. The host will need two
connections: one for the Internet, and one to connect it to the rest of the network.
Either a modem or network adapter can be used to connect to the Internet. Use the
2Wire PC Port USB Adapter to connect the host computer to the rest of the
network.
Note: When setting up ICS, Windows 98 Second Edition automatically gives special
addresses (IPs) to the other computers on the network. In certain cases some
Internet Service Providers assign an IP address that cannot be used with a shared
Internet connection, or with other resources on the network.

Before you start

• If any of your client computers are set to obtain an IP address automatically
(from a DHCP server), you should shut down those computers before you
install ICS. This will ensure that the IP information assigned by the previous
DHCP server doesn’t interfere with the information assigned by the ICS
DHCP server.
• If you already have another sharing application such as Sygate or WinGate
installed, you must uninstall it before installing ICS. Some sharing programs
(ICS included) take control of one or more of your Network adapters
and/or protocols, and having more then one program trying to control them
can lead to conflicts.

Installing ICS on the Host Computer

1. Select Start, Settings, Control Panel, and double-click Add/Remove
Programs.

5. Select Dial-up connection if you will be using a modem and telephone line
or ISDN; select High-speed connection if you will be using a network
adapter, ADSL, or Ethernet.
6. The setup wizard prompts you to create a Client Configuration Disk.
The Client Configuration Disk enables you to set up additional computers
(clients) on your home network. After you have created the disk, use it to
configure computers you wish to include on your home network.
After installation is complete, your computer will restart.

Right-click the ICS Control Panel icon to access these commands:

• Status. The number of computers using the Internet connection (see note).
• Options. Displays the ICS Control Panel.
• Disable Internet Connection Sharing. Disables Internet Connection Sharing.
Note: It can take up to 15 minutes before ICS shows the correct number of
connections. This is because ICS holds Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and
User Datagram Protocol (UDP) ports open for a client for up to 10 minutes after
the activity on that port has stopped. When a port is open for a client, ICS counts
the port as a connected client. The count of connected computers is updated after
the port is closed.
The ICS Control Panel does not allow you to control logging, open special ports,
control Client network access (other than to shut off ICS), or control ICS’ DHCP
server.
