Lecture 9

The document discusses self inductance in coils. It explains that when a switch is closed to allow current through a coil, the current does not instantly change from 0 to its maximum value. Instead, it increases over time as the magnetic flux produced by the current also increases. This changing flux induces an electromotive force (emf) that opposes the change in flux. As the current gradually increases through the coil, the opposing induced emf decreases, allowing the current to rise. The document defines self inductance (L) as the ratio of the induced emf to the rate of change of current. L depends on factors like the geometry of the coil, number of turns, and magnetic permeability of its core.

Self Inductance

Q
Self inductance

When the switch is closed, the

current doesn’t change immediately
from 0 to its max value.
The current increases with time,
so, the magnetic flux due to this
current increases.
The change in the flux induces emf
opposes the change in the flux.

The net potential difference = 𝜺 − 𝜺𝒊𝒏𝒅

Gradually, 𝜺𝒊𝒏𝒅 decreases and the

current increases
