Location Recording

This document provides an overview of location sound recording. It discusses the two main types of location tracks - guide tracks which are not used in the final product, and sync tracks which are. Sync tracks are used for films, television, documentaries, and live events. Equipment used includes microphones, recorders, mixers, boom poles, and more. Different types of microphones like dynamic, condenser, and their polar patterns are explained. Portable recorders and using computers as digital audio workstations are also covered. Problems that can occur with sync recording on location and how to overcome them are discussed.

Basics of Location Recording

Types of Location Recording

• Location Recording can be divided in 2 Parts:

1. Guide Track/Pilot Track:
Sounds recorded at the time of shoot are not used
finally. They are used as a guide in the post production.
2. Sync Track:
Sounds recorded at the time of shoot are finally used in
the post production.
Sync Track is used in:

• Feature Film
• Short film/Independent film
• Television Serial
• Documentary
• Films for OTT Platform
• News, Sports
• live Music transmissions
Equipment used in Location Recording
• Microphone
• Recorder
• Audio Mixer
• Boom Pole
• Microphone Wind Shield
• Head Phone
• Cables
Microphone
• Types of Microphone:
1. Dynamic Mic: No need of power

2. Condenser Mic: Needs power

Polar Pattern of Microphones
1. Omni-Directional: All sides of this microphone are
live and any side can capture the sound.

2. Bi-Directional: Two sides of this mic are live and the

sound can be captured by two diagonally opposite
sides
3. Cardioid Shape: Front side of this mic is maximum
live and it reduces according to the picture.

4. Super Cardioid or Uni-directional: Front side of

this mic is live and other sides are much less live or
non- live. Mostly used on location.
Uni-directional Microphone
The uni-directional mics are normally used at the time
of shooting on location. They are also called Shot gun
mic or simply Boom mic as they are fixed on a Boom
Pole.
Windshield,Headphone,Boom Pole,
Cables etc
Lavalier or Clip-on Microphone
1. Wired Lavalier mic: Small mic with wire

2. Wire less Lavalier mic: Small mic without wire.

They are also known as Radio/Cordless mics
Sound Recorder
• Recording on Camera:
1. Recording on Camcorder:

2. Recording on DSLR:
Portable Digital Recorder for Location

• Small Recorder: It normally records 2

Tracks(Stereo).

• Multi Track Recorder: This recorder has more than

2 tracks. It may be 4,6,8 or more.
Digital Audio Workstation(DAW)
• Recording on Computer with Sound
Interface/Sound Card: A laptop or Desktop
Computer can become a recorder with Sound
Software installed in it and a Sound Interface for
input & out put of signal. It is called DIGITAL AUDIO
WORKSTATION(DAW).Presently all Studio Recording
system is based on this principle.
Audio Interface or Sound Card
Audio Interface allows to connect things like
microphones and guitar cables to a computer and
record via USB most commonly. It also has outputs
typically and allow Studio Monitor Speakers, computer
speakers or headphones to listen to the recorded
sound.
Recording on Smart Phone
• Smart phones are being used now a days to shoot
news on location. The mics are directly connected
into smart phones and shooting is done in video
mode.
Audio Mixer
Audio mixing is the process by which multiple sounds
are combined into one or more channels and provide
one or more outputs. In the process, a source's volume
level, frequency content, dynamics, and panoramic
position are manipulated or enhanced.
Audio Mixer Can be 2 Types
1. Powered Mixer: Runs by electrical power. Used in
Sound Studio, TV Serial, Live Music show etc.
2. Small Battery Operated Mixer: Apart from
electrical power, it has option of Battery power. It is
used in Documentary, Short fiction film and Feature
film also. They can be light and portable.
Problems and how to overcome during
Sync Recording on Location
• Signal: The desired sound
• Ambience: Expected environmental sound.
• Noise: The sound which is not desired.
• Signal/Noise Ratio: Should be maximum. To attain that,
sound source and mic should be as close as possible.
The input fader of recorder should be open less.
• How to achieve signal/noise ratio maximum:
1. Choice of mic- Shot gun mic
2. Lavalier/radio mic
3. Keeping environmental sound around shooting zone
as low as possible. Putting off possible loud noise
sources.
