Assignment Chemistry

This lab document outlines an experiment to measure the velocity of four walkers using displacement-time data collected from timers along a hallway. Graphs of displacement versus time were created and the slope of each line was used to calculate the velocity of each walker. The results showed that walker 1 and 2 maintained a constant velocity while walker 3 changed speed halfway through in order to examine the effects on the slope of the line.

Lab 1 - Walk This Way

Introduction

Purpose

Hypothesis

Background

In this experiment, displacement and time data was collected for

four individual walkers. This data will be used to examine the
velocity of the walker. The velocity of the walkers will be found
using the slope of displacement time graphs. The equation for
finding the slope of a graph is given in equation 1. Finally, the
shape of the graph will be used to determine the path of the walker.

Equation 1
Figure 1:slope equation (wiki, 2018)

M is the slope of the graph, or the velocity of the walker, y

represents the displacement of the walker and x represents the time
of the walker.

Variables: Independent variables

DV
CV

Materials:

- String divided by knots in meter intervals

- 12+ stop watches

Experimental Procedure
1. People with stopwatches were separated by 1.7 m in a line in
the hallway.
2. A separate time recorder was paired with each stopwatch
operator.
3. Four walkers were stationed before all of the timers.
4. The timers all started the stopwatches when the walkers
began and stopped when the walker passed them.
5. The walkers walked down the hall in the following four
ways:
a) Slow constant velocity
b) Fast constant velocity
c) Slow constant velocity halfway then stop for 5 seconds then
fast constant velocity
d) asdlkfa
6. The times for each walker were recorded and shared with the
rest of the class.

Analysis

The graphs for walkers 1 – 4 are included on the following page as

graph 1 – 4.

The velocities for the individual walkers were calculated using

Microsoft Excel and have been included on the individual graphs.
The velocities are also summarized in the table below.

Discussion –

The following graphs illustrated many properties of a displacement

time graph. For example a zero slope on a velocity time graph
represents no motion as illustrated by walker #3. A positive slope
represents constant positive motion as illustrated by walker 1.

There were many sources of error in this experiment. The timers

likely had difficulty all starting at the same time. The wind
resistance would be a greater factor for chubbier walkers. This is
due to the fact that wind resistance increases with surface area. A
chubbier walker would have a greater surface.

This experiment could be improved in several ways. Here are those

several ways.

Spacing the timers out further would help improve the

accuracy of the experiment. Any variation in the timing or the
walking would be averaged out more if the timers were spread out
more.
