BSE511 Lecture8 (TutorialSolution)

The document discusses lighting design calculations for two scenarios: 1. A parking lot with 6 lamp posts arranged in a grid. It is determined that a minimum of 3 floodlights per post are needed to achieve average illuminance of 57.8 lux. Maintained illuminance at the center and corners is calculated. 2. A corridor with inner and outer rows of floodlights. Average maintained illuminance of 126.4 lux is achieved with specific luminaires oriented at calculated vertical and horizontal angles. Illuminance at the corridor center is determined to be 177.4 lux.

Week8 Tutorial

Q1.
(a)
Vertical angles at the boundary lines are the same for all 6 lamp posts:
V1 = arctan(55/15) – arctan(38.33/15) = 6.1° (above beam)
V2 = arctan(38.33/15) – arctan(5/15) = 50.2° (below beam)

Horizontal angles for lamp posts at the corners:

At V = V1, HL = arctan(60/√(152+552)) = 46.5°; HR = 0°
At V = 0, HL = arctan(60/√(152+38.332)) = 55.5°; HR = 0°
At V = V2, HL = arctan(60/√(152+52)) = 75.2°; HR = 0°

Horizontal angles for lamp posts at the middle:

At V = V1, HL = HR = arctan(30/√(152+552)) = 27.8°
At V = 0, HL = HR = arctan(30/√(152+38.332)) = 36.1°
At V = V2, HL = HR = arctan(30/√(152+52)) = 62.2°

UF for corner lamps: 224.2/1000 = 0.2242

UF for middle lamps: 436.4/1000 = 0.4364

Suppose n lamps are installed on each lamp post, then

n × 48000 × (4 × 0.2242 + 2 × 0.4364) × 0.85 × 0.8
50 =
60 × 50
Therefore,
50 × 60 × 50
n= = 2.6
48000 × (4 × 0.2242 + 2 × 0.4364) × 0.85 × 0.8
i.e. a minimum of 3 floodlights should be installed on each lamp post.

(b) (i)
Average illuminance is:
3 × 48000 × (4 × 0.2242 + 2 × 0.4364) × 0.85 × 0.8
E= = 57.8 lux
60 × 50

(ii)
At centre:
For lamp posts at corners: V = 5.2° (below beam), H = 41.8°
Estimated I = 110 cd/klm
cos θ = 0.3333
Maintained illuminance at centre from corner lamp posts
4 × 3 × 110 × 48 × 0.33333 × 0.85 × 0.8
= = 7.1 lux
15 2
For lamp posts at mid-line: V = 5.2° (below beam), H = 0°
Estimated I = 1000 cd/klm
cos θ = 0.4472
Maintained illuminance at centre from mid-line lamp posts
2 × 3 × 1000 × 48 × 0.4472 3 × 0.85 × 0.8
= = 77.8 lux
15 2

Maintained illuminance at centre from all lamps = 7.1 + 77.8 = 84.9 lux

(iii)
Lamp posts at corners:
V H I (cd/klm) cos θ E (lux)
50.2° (below) 0° 130 0.9487 48.3
6.1° (above) 0° 500 0.2631 4.0
6.1° (above) 46.5° 40 0.1812 0.1
50.2° (below) 75.2° 0 0.2417 0
Maintained illuminance at corners due to corner lamp posts = 52.4
Lamp posts at mid-line:
V H I (cd/klm) cos θ E (lux)
50.2° (below) 62.2° 0 0.4423 0
6.1° (above) 27.8° 220 0.2328 1.2
Maintained illuminance at corners due to mid-line lamp posts = 1.2

Maintained illuminance at corners from all lamps = 52.4 + 1.2 = 53.6 lux
Q2.
(a)
Above beam vertical angle V1 = arctan(8/5) – arctan(4/5) = 19.3°
Below beam vertical angle V2 = arctan(4/5) = 38.7°

For the outer floodlights:

At V = V1, HL = arctan(2/9.43) = 12°; HR = arctan(14/9.43) = 56° V1
At V = 0, HL = arctan(2/6.4) = 17.3°; HR = arctan(14/6.4) = 65.4°
At V = V2, HL = arctan(2/5) = 21.8°; HR = arctan(14/5) = 70.3° V2

5m
For the inner floodlights:
At V = V1, HL = arctan(6/9.43) = 32.5°; HR = arctan(10/9.43) = 46.7°
At V = 0, HL = arctan(6/6.4) = 43.1°; HR = arctan(10/6.4) = 57.4°
At V = V2, HL = arctan(6/5) = 50.2°; HR = arctan(10/5) = 63.5°

Outer floodlights: UF=(94+166)/1000=0.260

Inner floodlights: UF=(154+164)/1000=0.318

Average maintained illuminance = 2×20000×(0.260+0.318)×0.7/(16×8) = 126.4 lx

(b)
Centre: V = 0°
Outer floodlights: H = arctan(6/6.4) = 43.1°; I = 1900 cd; d = √(42+62+52) = 8.77 m;
cos θ = 5/√(42+62+52) = 0.57
Inner floodlights: H = arctan(2/6.4) = 17.3°; I = 6800 cd; d = √(42+22+52) = 6.71 m;
cos θ = 5/√(42+22+52) = 0.745

 1900 × 0.57 × 0.7 6800 × 0.745 × 0.7 

Illuminance at centre Ec = 2 ×  +  = 177.4 lx
 8.77 2 6.712 

(c)
Luminance = 0.6×126.4/π = 24.1 cd/m2
