ATM Result of an action by the ATM application (i.e. BWAC) e.g. reading the card tracks, dispensing cash, etc.
HST Response received from the sub-host (BW, Sparrow) over the ATM’s controller channel
SUP Result of an action by the administrator using the ATM in Supervisor mode. E.g. Adding cash to the cassettes
USR Action by a cardholder or indeed any user of the ATM e.g. inserting a card, selecting a service, etc.
WEB Response received from the sub-host (BW) over the ATM’s web channel
The source’s keyword allows the bank to use scripts to extract/hide information from a certain
source if searching the electronic journal. For example, if the bank wants journal views without
user actions, it can use a script to filter out the ‘USR’ keywords.
1.4 Category
The journal uses a series of three-letter acronyms (TLAs) to identify categories for the events,
actions, operations and errors that can occur on the ATM.
The categories provide a mechanism for identifying a particular Transaction Type and the entries
associated with that Transaction Type.
It will be possible to use the categories to generate reports from the e-journal database that show
the transactional activity at the ATM.
For example, a script that searches the journal for the category ‘LSV’ would find all transactions
carried out by local cardholders at the ATM.
The following categories are defined:
ASV Anonymous Service - transaction carried out by an unknown user without a card e.g. redeeming a Money
Voucher, paying a bill, etc.
HSA Host System Authorised - transaction approved by the online host system
IDL IDLE loop - when there are no transactions in progress, the ATM executes its idle loop
LSV Local Service - transaction carried out by a local cardholder e.g. cash withdrawal, funds transfer, etc.
NSV Network Service - transaction carried out by a network cardholder e.g. cash withdrawal, bill payment, etc.
TMO Transaction timed out while waiting for authorisation from host
o Line 1 shows the time the ATM re-entered its idle loop after a previous transaction and the
BWAC version running on this ATM.
o Line 2 records that the date & time when a card was inserted into ATM 8184. This line
appears in the journal when the ATM detected a card in its card reader. The time
difference between lines 1 & 2 indicates how long the ATM has been idle.
o Line 3 provides details of the user’s card as read by the ATM:
‘MAG’ indicates that the ATM read the track details from the card’s magnetic stripe.
‘848848’ is the IMD of institution that issued the card.
‘******0004’ is the number of card inserted into the ATM digits (# mask in place for PCI
compliance).
‘1’ is the card sequence number.
o Line 4 provides information on the local service selected by the cardholder at the ATM. The
information includes the Transaction Type, the settlement group that the card belongs to
and the sequence number of the transaction.
‘FAST CASH’ - service selected by the cardholder at ATM
‘SG:A’ - card belongs to settlement group A. By default, local cards used in local branches
are members of settlement group A.
o Line 5 indicates the source account for the transaction; that is the account to be debited.
The account number is known only for local cards. For network cards, the account type is
recorded here.
‘SG:A’ - card’s BIN belongs to settlement group A. By default, local cards used in local
branches are members of settlement group A.
‘[0005]’ – Transaction sequence number
‘[000181]’ – System Trace Audit Number (STAN)
o Line 6 indicates the funding (debit) account for the transaction (local cards only). For
network cards, BWAC records the account type.
o Line 7 records the currency & the withdrawal amount that the cardholder requested.
o Line 8 indicates that the transaction was authorised by an online host. If the host returned
an authorisation code to the ATM, it is recorded here. Empty brackets indicate that an
authorisation code was not provided. Possible journal entries that can be recorded at this
point are:
‘HAS’ - the transaction was authorised by an online host
‘OFA’ - the transaction was authorised offline by the ATM
‘TMO’ - transaction timed out while waiting for an authorisation response from the host. In
this case, the transaction is terminated and a suspect reversal is sent to the host.
o Line 9 records the RRN and STAN that were provided in the authorisation response from the
sub-host. Up to 12 digits of the RRN are recorded. This line will contain empty brackets ‘[ ]’ if
the RRN and/or STAN were not received in the response.
o Line 10 indicates that the ATM has successfully mixed & stacked the requested amount. This is
an important checkpoint in the transaction cycle. This line does not appear on ATMs with
spray cash dispensers.
o Line 11 indicates that the card has been removed from the ATM by the cardholder.
o Line 12 indicates the ATM has successfully moved the cash from its safe to the presentation
slot at the front of the ATM. The cardholder now has access to the cash. The date is also
recorded on this line.
o Line 13 indicates that the cardholder had taken the cash from the ATM’s presentation slot. The
date is also recorded on this line.
o Line 14 prints the column headings for the next 4 journal lines.
‘ID’ – Logical Cassette ID
‘DENOM’ – Note denomination
‘MX’ – Number of notes of this denomination that were dispensed
‘LEFT’ – Number of notes of this denomination left in the cassette at end of the transaction
o Line 15 provides an estimate of the number of notes moved to the REJECT bin during the
transaction and the total number of notes in the REJECT bin at the end of the transaction. This
number is an estimate because the ATM does not have a mechanism to count notes sent to
the reject bin.
Note: It is not unusual for notes to be rejected during a successful transaction. This can happen if
the ATM has been loaded with poor quality notes. Poor quality notes may be torn or folded at the
corners. When the cash unit picks a note, two or more may stick together and the number of
notes placed on the stacker will exceed the requested amount. When the sensors on the stacker
detect this, the notes are rejected and the ATM attempts to pick the correct number of notes
again.
o Line 16 indicates the number of dispensed notes from LOGICAL CASSETTE TYPE 1 and the
number remaining at the end of the transaction.
o Line 17 indicates the number of dispensed notes from LOGICAL CASSETTE TYPE 2 and the
number remaining at the end of the transaction.
o Line 18 indicates the number of dispensed notes from LOGICAL CASSETTE TYPE 3 and the
number remaining at the end of the transaction.
o Line 19 indicates the time that the ATM re-entered its idle loop after the ATM session had
finished.
This Fast Cash transaction is similar to the previous example above, except it was on an ATM
equipped with cameras and installed with the BWAC Camera module.
o Line 4 records the JPG filename of the photo taken when a card was inserted into the ATM.
o Line 5 records the checksum that the ATM calculated for the photo taken when a card was
inserted. If the photo is subsequently tampered with, it will produce a different checksum.
o Line 14 records the JPG filename of the photo taken when the card was removed from the
ATM.
o Line 15 records the checksum that the ATM calculated for the photo taken when the card was
removed.
o Line 17 records the JPG filename of the photo taken when cash was presented to the
cardholder.
o Line 18 records the checksum that the ATM calculated for the photo taken when the cash was
presented.
o Line 20 records the JPG filename of the photo taken when cash was removed from the
presentation slot by the cardholder.
o Line 21 records the checksum that the ATM calculated for the photo taken when the cash was
removed.
o Line 23 provides an estimate of the number of notes moved to the REJECT bin during the
transaction and the total number of notes in the REJECT bin at the end of the transaction. This
number is an estimate because the ATM does not have a mechanism to count notes sent to
the reject bin.
o Line 24 provides an estimate of the number of notes that were retracted during the
transaction and the total number of notes in the RETRACT bin at the end of the transaction.
This number is an estimate because the ATM does not have a mechanism to count notes that
are sent to the retract bin.
o Lines 25-28 indicate the number of notes dispensed from each LOGICAL CASH UNIT and the
number remaining at the end of the transaction.
o Lines 24-27 indicate the number of notes dispensed from each LOGICAL CASH UNIT and the
number remaining at the end of the transaction.
o Line 2 records that the date & time when a card was inserted into ATM 4620.
o Line 3 records that the cardholder removed the card BEFORE performing a transaction at the
ATM. This line will appear on the journal if the ATM is fitted with a DIP card reader and the
cardholder inserted a magnetic stripe card. A DIP card reader reads the card’s magnetic stripe
as it is being removed. The ATM prompts the cardholder to remove the card before starting
the transaction.
o Line 4 records the card type, IMD of the card issuer, the masked PAN and the card sequence
number.
o Line 5 records the service selected by the cardholder, the settlement group that the card
belongs to and the transaction sequence number.
o Line 6 provides more details on the transaction including the settlement group that the card’s
BIN belongs to, the transaction sequence number and the system trace audit number (STAN)
generated by the ATM.
‘SG:A’ – indicates that the card’s BIN belongs to settlement group A. By default, local cards
used in local branches are members of settlement group A.
‘[0007]’ – Transaction sequence number
‘[000183]’ – System Trace Audit Number
o Line 7 records the account debited by the transaction (Note: the account number is known for
local cards only). For network cards, the account type is indicated here.
o Line 8 records the currency & the amount of cash that the cardholder requested.
o Line 9 indicates that the transaction was authorised online. The authorisation code is recorded
if it was provided in the response from the sub-host.
o Line 10 records the RRN and (sub-host) STAN if provided in the response from the sub-host.
This line will contain empty brackets ‘[ ]’ if the RRN and/or STAN was not received in the
response.
o Line 11 indicates that the ATM has presented the cash to the cardholder.
o Lines 12-18 provide a summary of the cash remaining in the ATM’s cassettes when the
transaction has completed.
2.2.4 Local Fast Cash #4
The journal extract for a Fast Cash withdrawal by a local cardholder on an ATM with dual cash
dispensers is shown below:
This journal extract is almost identical to the extract for a Fast Cash transaction carried out on an
ATM with a single dispenser.

o Line 10 indicates that the ATM has successfully mixed & stacked the requested amount. The
dispenser used to mix the requested amount is recorded in the brackets [ ].
o Lines 11-13 are standard for a Fast Cash transaction carried out on an ATM.
o Lines 14-18 indicate the number of notes dispensed from each LOGICAL CASH UNIT and the
number remaining at the end of the transaction. A logical cash unit may contain physical
cassettes from the left and right dispenser.
2.2.5 Network Fast Cash
The journal extract for a Fast Cash withdrawal by a network cardholder is shown below:
o Line 3 provides details of the track data as read by ATM. The IMD of the card issuer is 632116.
For PCI compliance, only four digits of the PAN are printed. The card’s sequence number is ‘1’.
o Line 4 provides details of the service selected by the network cardholder.
‘FAST CASH’ – network cardholder selected the Fast Cash service.
‘SG:B’ – the card’s BIN is part of settlement group B.

presentation slot. The cardholder now has access to the cash. The date is also recorded on
this line.
o Line 14 indicates that the cardholder took the cash from the ATM’s presentation slot. The
date is also recorded on this line.
o Lines 15-19 give a breakdown of the cash dispensed and the amount of each denomination
remaining in the ATM at the end of the transaction.
o Lines 20-21 indicate that a LORO message was successfully sent to the sub-host for the cash
withdrawal transaction. Sometimes these lines may not appear until a later point in the
journal. They are printed as soon as a successful acknowledgement is received from the sub-
host, which could be any time after the transaction. Sometimes it will be necessary to look
further down the journal roll to find a matching LORO for a transaction.
BWAC sends a LORO message to the sub-host when the ATM dispenses cash on behalf of another
issuer. It is a Force Post message sent via the ATM’s Store and Forward (SAF) mechanism. When a
message is placed in the SAF, the ATM will make repeated attempts to send the message to the
sub-host. The ATM removes the message from the SAF when an acknowledgement is received for
the LORO.
