Subject: Coding a Greeting Program Usability Testing
Dear Content Director,
I'm writing to provide a brief overview of the results from our recent usability test
for the "How to Code a Simple Greeting Program" instructions. We had three
individuals go through them, and I'm happy to report that they had a positive
experience.
Overall, the test participants found the instructions helpful and easy to understand.
However, we would like to introduce some modifications. We've made the
following adjustments to ensure a better user experience:
An additional step to prompt users to create a Replit account has been added.
The size of the screenshot images has been enlarged.
More screenshots have been added, specifically one for each step.
We kindly request your approval for these recommended changes. Once approved,
we will promptly update the instructions and conduct another usability test to
ensure an improved user experience.
Best,
Amadea Koleci

Subject: Coding a Greeting Program Usability Results
Action Required: Review Recommended Changes
Distribution List: Content Director, Online Content team
Hello all. I am writing to report the results of the Usability Test conducted on the
"How to Code a Simple Greeting Program" instructions. This test aimed to assess
the clarity and effectiveness of the instructions and gather feedback for possible
improvements.
Summary
In summary, the usability test revealed that users generally found the
instructions helpful, but several areas for improvement were identified.
During the test, it became evident that an additional step is needed at the
beginning of the instructions to prompt users to create an account when
they first visit the Replit website, ensuring a smoother onboarding process.
Participants also recommended enlarging the screenshots throughout the
instructions to enhance visibility and comprehension, particularly benefiting
users with visual impairments. The addition of more screenshots, ideally
one for each step, was suggested to provide users with a valuable visual
reference that complements the written instructions, aiding their
understanding of each coding step. This alignment of visual cues with
written content was deemed essential by users to enhance their overall
experience.
Results
During the usability test, I closely observed how participants interacted with
the instructions and noted their feedback.
Successful and Effective Instructions
The instruction to "Write the Python Code" in step #4, was well-received.
Users found this step easy to follow and execute, which highlights the
strength of the current instructions in guiding users through the coding
process. Steps #6 and #7, involving running the program and entering the
user's name, were also considered clear and user-friendly. Users
successfully executed these steps without significant issues. Users also
received the expected output message successfully by following step #8,
indicating that the final step of the instructions was effective in achieving
the desired outcome.
Main Issues and Solutions
Improving the user experience involves addressing specific challenges
encountered by participants during the Replit tutorial. In step #1, for
instance, participants found it somewhat challenging to locate the account
creation option on the Replit website. While some users are familiar with
this process, others may not be, and providing clear instructions on how to
create a Replit account as part of the initial steps will eliminate this hurdle.
In step #5, participants suggested that we could include a brief explanation
of the Python code’s purpose. This additional context would help users
understand the significance of their actions and the expected outcome,
making the learning experience more enriching. Moreover, enlarging
included screenshots for better visibility and adding more screenshots to
offer a comprehensive visual reference for each coding step would
significantly enhance the tutorial, since users with visual impairments and
low levels of familiarity with the coding process would greatly benefit from
these adjustments.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the usability test revealed that the "How to Code a Simple
Greeting Program" instructions are generally effective but can benefit from
a few enhancements to improve user onboarding and comprehension. By
addressing the recommended changes, a more user-friendly and inclusive
learning experience can be created for individuals of varying skill levels.
Recommendation
I recommend implementing the following changes based on user feedback.
These recommendations are made with the aim of improving the overall
user experience and ensuring that users of all levels can benefit from our
instructions.
Include an initial step to guide users on creating a Replit account.
Enlarge the size of included screenshots.
Add more screenshots.
Consider providing a brief explanation of the Python code's purpose in Step
#5.
