INTRODUCTION

The "Microcontroller-based Air Pollution Monitoring System with Automated Air

Purifier Using IoT Application" is a pioneering solution designed to address the critical
issue of air pollution in indoor environments, particularly in hospitals. This system
employs microcontrollers and IoT technology to continuously monitor air quality
parameters and take proactive measures to ensure a healthy and safe environment. The
integration of a dynamic air purifier system exemplifies the adaptive nature of this
technology. This report outlines the project's architecture, components, and
functionalities, emphasizing the importance of indoor air quality management, especially
in healthcare facilities.

Background of the problem

 Escalating concerns regarding air quality in urban and sensitive environments.

 Indoor air pollution poses significant health risks, especially in hospitals.
 Contaminants like VOCs, particulate matter, and gases adversely affect
respiratory health.
 Vulnerable individuals, such as patients with compromised immune systems, are
at higher risk.
 Need for sophisticated monitoring systems and interventions for optimal air
quality.
 Urgency to develop innovative solutions combining technology and
environmental consciousness.

Overview of the current state of the technology

Air Pollution Monitoring Systems:

The field of air pollution monitoring has witnessed significant advancements in recent
years. Traditional monitoring methods, relying on fixed monitoring stations, have been
augmented with portable and wearable sensor technologies. These sensors employ a
range of technologies including electrochemical, optical, and particulate matter sensors to
measure various air pollutants such as carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2),
sulfur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), ozone (O3), and volatile
organic compounds (VOCs). Furthermore, advancements in sensor miniaturization and

cost reduction have led to the proliferation of low-cost, high-accuracy sensors, expanding
the accessibility of air quality data collection.
Automated Air Purification Systems:
In tandem with advancements in monitoring technology, the development of automated
air purification systems has gained traction. These systems employ a combination of
filters, ionizers, and chemical treatments to remove pollutants from ambient air. Notably,
the incorporation of smart controls and algorithms allows these systems to adapt to
fluctuating pollution levels, optimizing energy consumption and purification efficiency.
Additionally, IoT-enabled air purifiers can be remotely controlled and monitored,
providing users with real-time feedback on air quality improvements.

Objectives of the study

General Objectives:

The general objective of this research is to develop a Microcontroller-based Air Pollution

Monitoring System integrated with an Automated Air Purifier utilizing IoT technology
for indoor environments, with a primary focus on healthcare facilities. This system aims
to enhance indoor air quality by providing real-time monitoring and autonomous
purification capabilities.

Specific Objectives:

1. Sensor Integration and Calibration:

 Integrate a range of advanced sensors capable of detecting various air
pollutants including VOCs, particulate matter, and gases.
 Calibrate sensors to ensure accurate and reliable measurement of pollutant
levels.
2. Microcontroller-based Control System:
 Utilize a microcontroller platform for data processing, sensor interfacing, and
control of the automated air purifier.
3. Automated Air Purification Algorithm:
 Develop an algorithm that autonomously adjusts air purification settings based
on real-time pollutant levels detected by the sensors.
4. User Interface and Application Development:
