(TENTATIVE)
COURSE OUTLINE
MECE 2310U Concurrent Engineering and Design
Fall 2018
September 06 – December 05, 2018
Course Description
The purpose of studying concurrent engineering and design is to learn how to decrease the
development lead time for a product/process/system or service and to establish an integrated
lean workflow process that reduces waste and improves quality, design, manufacture, assembly,
maintenance and aftersales support, based on analytically and systematically established
customer requirements. This course is about this modern concurrent (also known as
simultaneous or integrated) product development process model. Unlike the traditional product
development approach, concurrent engineering and design reunites technical and non-technical
disciplines and brings forward a philosophy of cross-functional cooperation in order to create
products which meet pre-determined objectives, and are better, less expensive, and more
quickly brought to market. It is a process in which appropriate disciplines are committed to work
interactively to analyze market and customer requirements in order to improve the end-to-end
process by which products are conceived, designed, manufactured, assembled, sold to the
customer, serviced, and finally disposed of. The concept of design is presented. Brainstorming,
creativity methods, design for manufacturing, design for assembly, design for cost, design for
quality, life cycle design, and rapid prototyping topics are addressed. Teamwork and
communication skills are developed.

Course Organization and Delivery Mode

This is a single-semester course that is worth 3 credits. It involves three lecture hours and two
laboratory hours per week for one semester (one lecture hour is equivalent to 50 minutes of
instruction time). The course meets twice per week for 75 minutes for lectures and has two
laboratory hours once per week. Lecture and laboratory attendance is MANDATORY. All enrolled

5 of 19
students in the course are required to attend all scheduled lectures and all scheduled laboratory
sessions because learning is motivated through active discussion, demonstration, and practice of
the topics being studied. In order for the enrolled learners to get the most out of this course, they
are expected to come to class prepared for discussion of the scheduled topic(s). This includes
pre-reading the lecture notes, textbook(s), and other suggested reading materials as well as
contributing questions to the class dialog.
Lectures are designed to ensure that students understand the basic concepts and
methodologies of concurrent engineering and design. The lectures provide information about
learning and implementing specific methods of the product development process and provide
guidance on how to achieve the course deliverables. Students are expected to dedicate to this
course 4 to 6 hours per week outside of class. Strong emphasis is given to teamwork.
The course will be delivered by a combination of web-centric supported classroom
lectures using Blackboard and computer laboratory project work. Both the course instructor and
the TAs mainly conduct online course related communication via Blackboard. Lecture notes will
be made available to students in Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, or Adobe Acrobat
format. Students are responsible for checking Blackboard REGULARLY for course information and
announcements. Availability of personal laptop computers and student proficiency in using
laptop computers and the use of Blackboard in classrooms wired for computer use and Internet
access, as well as remotely, is assumed.
Enrolled students are responsible for all completed work, schedule adjustments and
assigned work addressed during laboratories and classes. It is the students’ responsibility to make
proper schedule adjustments for any planned or unplanned event that may cause their absences.

Lab Description
The MANDATORY laboratories will provide exposure to an advanced level of hands-on
application of a dedicated 3D CAD solid modeling software and CAD exercises. Practical work
assigned to students will help students to achieve the learning outcomes. To further support the
delivery of the laboratory CAD topics and increase the CAD proficiency of the students, for each
instructional lab a step-by-step manual in pdf format with included screen shots and detailed
explanation will be provided to the students via Blackboard. In addition, downloadable voice-
over-video digital self-study-and-review files that consist of the exactly same instructional CAD
lab material that was presented by the TAs and covered during the weekly lab sessions will be
posted on Blackboard. Thereby, students gain ubiquitous access to the instructional CAD lab
material.

Computer Experience
3D CAD solid modeling software, Microsoft Project and Engineering Design software tools are
utilized in this course. Students need to be familiar with laptop applications, Blackboard system
and common documentation, presentation and communication software. Application of
MATLAB in design projects and some of the assignments is also recommended. In addition, it is
assumed that students are familiar with the use of Microsoft Office.

Final Grade Breakdown
The progressive development of both concurrent engineering and design skills by each student
will be assessed via a variety of assessment tools of unequal level of difficulty. Throughout the
term, students will be assigned: 3 biweekly group assignments (BA) (5-6 students per group), 1
group case study (CS), and 2 group design projects (DP#1 and DP#2). In addition, there will be a
written midterm and a written final examination each of which will include a practical portion
that will demonstrate students’ proficiency in solid modeling using a dedicated 3D CAD solid
modeling software. Each student will need to demonstrate through the assigned individual and
group work that a satisfactory overall level of concurrent engineering and design skills has been
achieved.
1) Three Group Biweekly Assignments (BA) (3 x 5%) 15%
2) One Group Case Study per Each Student Group (CS) (1 x 5%) 5%
 Oral Group Case Study Presentation (4%)
 Case Study Written Report and a CD (1%)
IMPORTANT NOTE: Normally, the required scope of a case study includes:
