CHAPTER 1
OUTLINE OF THE STUDY

1.1 INTRODUCTION:

The basis of education is how it is taught and learned, a dynamic exchange that
helps students advance their quest for knowledge and skill development. This
process is an intricate, multidimensional interaction between teachers and
students shaped by several variables, all vital in determining the nature of the
educational process. Teaching is primarily the art and science of disseminating
information and facilitating learning. Proficiency in the subject matter is not
enough for effective teaching; one must also be able to engage and encourage
students. To create an atmosphere that promotes interest, reasoning, and
engaged participation, educators must modify their teaching strategies to
accommodate a range of learning preferences. To ensure that students
understand and retain the material, the teaching process entails preparing,
providing content, evaluating progress, and modifying instructional tactics. In
contrast, the learning process is a highly personalized experience that is shaped
by a variety of elements, including enthusiasm, past knowledge, and the learning
environment. Education and learning are two-way processes. It relies on
cooperation and efficient communication. To promote a feeling of safety and
belonging, educators must establish a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. This
motivates the students to participate in the discussion, ask clarifications, and raise
questions. Teachers can then improve their techniques and adjust to the needs of
their students by using feedback and active participation from their students.

A student’s learning pattern and teacher’s teaching pattern have changed from
time to time due to many such deviations. In the present scenario, learners need
an easy way of learning and similar is the expectation from tutors. This has
changed the pattern of teaching and learning aids being used in classrooms. From
the inputs of the Congress Research Service, the application of AI in classrooms is
noticed in terms of:

“Tutoring. AI programs commonly referred to as Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS)


or adaptive tutors engage students in dialogue, answer questions, and provide
feedback.

Personalizing Learning. ITS and adaptive tutors tailor learning material, pace,
sequence, and difficulty to each student’s needs. AI can also provide support for
special needs students, for instance by teaching autistic children to identify facial
expressions.

Testing. Computer adaptive assessments adjust the difficulty of successive


questions based on the accuracy of the student’s answers, enabling more precise
identification of a student’s mastery level.

Automating Tasks. AI can perform routine tasks such as taking attendance,


grading assignments, and generating test questions.” (Joyce, J. Lu and Laurie, A.
Harris, 2018).

CONCEPT AND DEFINITIONS:

AI was used for the first time in 1956 during a workshop organized by John
McCarthy at Dartmouth College. The workshop proposed that the research will
proceed under the hypothesis that every facet of intelligence, including learning,
can theoretically be described with such precision that a machine could be
trained to mimic it. The goal was to figure out how to make machines speak,
create abstractions and concepts, solve problems that are currently exclusive to
humans, and advance technologically. (Russel & Norvig, 2010).

 Baker and Smith (2019) define AI as"computers which perform cognitive


tasks, usually associated with human minds, particularly learning and
problem-solving". According to Stone et al (2016) "AI is a science and a set
of computational technologies that are inspired by—but typically operate
quite differently from—the ways people use their nervous systems and
bodies to sense, learn, reason, and take action”.

 Luckin et al. (2016) define AI as “computer systems that have been designed
to interact with the world through capabilities (for example, visual
perception and speech. recognition) and intelligent behaviors (for example,
assessing the available information and then taking the most sensible action
to achieve a stated goal) that we would think of as essentially human”.

AI IN EDUCATION:

The application of artificial intelligence in education (AIEd) has been the subject of
academic research for more than 30 years. The field investigates learning
wherever it occurs, in traditional classrooms or in workplaces, to support formal
education as well as lifelong learning. It brings together AI, which is itself
interdisciplinary, and the learning sciences (education, psychology, neuroscience,
linguistics, sociology, and anthropology) to promote the development of adaptive
learning environments and other AIEd tools that are flexible, inclusive,
personalized, engaging, and effective.(Luckin et al. 2016)

From McNeill's (2018) post on "Artificial Intelligence in Classroom" on Microsoft's


Education Blog, it is clear that a lot of smart apps are being developed to benefit
both the teaching and student communities equally. Several apps, such as
Microsoft Office Lens, Seeing AI App, Presentation Translator, etc., are proving to
be beneficial in boosting student productivity and providing instructors with more
room to create better lesson plans. A "teaching assistant" AI program, for
instance, has been employed in certain situations after being trained on 40,000
discussion forum posts. Based on the answers to similar queries in the past, the
program could respond to them. It is anticipated that this teaching assistant will
analyze the relationship between the question and the pre-programmed answers
to respond to an increasing number of such questions. Borge (2016) also said that
AI can bring changes in the settings where students learn and by whom they are
taught. Few students report the fear of answering a teacher’s question during a
class, in front of their peers. They don’t like making a mistake or being pointed
out for the mistakes they make when they stand in the classroom. In such
situations, AI can render wonderful support by personalizing sessions to those
individuals and enhancing their interaction and interest towards understanding
the subject.
In many developing countries of Asia and the Pacific, people with disabilities are
commonly trapped in an awful cycle of exclusion from society, participation in
jobs and mainstream programs for development. According to the World Report
on Disability (World Health Organization, 2011), more than a billion people
worldwide live with some form of disability, and 150 million school-age children
have disabilities. These children don't finish their primary schooling because they
are frequently denied access to educational opportunities. In the same way, a
recently released UNESCO Global Report (UNESCO, 2013) shows that individuals
with disabilities encounter numerous obstacles, such as limited employment
opportunities, limited access to education and information, and prejudice.
Information and communication technologies, however, have the potential to be
an effective tool for promoting inclusion and education for people with
disabilities. People with disabilities can enhance their quality of life through
technological advancements. (Arrigo, 2005). The successful application of such
technologies can make classrooms more inclusive, physical environments more
accessible, and teaching and learning content and techniques more in tune with
learners’ needs (UNESCO, 2013).

Letter to Shareholders, Microsoft’s Annual Report (2017) has emphasized the


impact of technology on each aspect of life, work and society at large. It has
indicated that the world needs a trusted technology that can benefit people and
society. The technology platforms and tools can enable creativity in people with
and without disabilities. The advancement in technologies has enabled Microsoft
to empower people with disabilities, for instance, it has provided learning tools
that have helped children with dyslexia to learn more. This has broadened the
scope of AI and Machine Learning. AI Technology has been developed for
performing high-computing tasks with the help of computer tools for the ease of
humans. However, machines can never replace human beings but can assist them
with better work arrangements. Recent developments in AI may enable the
development in the education and learning sector to empower people with
special needs in education.
As per World Health Organization (2011) disability is the human condition from
which almost everyone suffers either temporarily or permanently. It has been
defined in numerous manners, The International Classification of Functioning,
Disability and Health (ICF) emphasizes environmental factors in creating disability.
ICF is classified into Impairment, Disabilities and Handicaps. The United Nations
defines Impairment and Disability differently: Impairment: “Any loss or
abnormality of psychological or anatomical structure or function”. Disability: “Any
restriction or lack (resulting from an impairment) of ability to perform an activity
in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being”. People
with Disabilities are also referred to as People with special needs. As per White
Paper on Rights of Persons with Disabilities(2016),“disability is imposed by
society when a person with a physical, psychosocial, intellectual, neurological
and/or sensory impairment is denied access to full participation in all aspects of
life, and when society fails to uphold the rights and specific needs of individuals
with impairments”. According to this report persons with disabilities normally
face three kinds of interrelated barriers: social, psychological and structural (that
is infrastructure and operations).According to additional research, people with
disabilities are further divided into four categories: hearing, vision, mobility, and
cognitive. (Laabidi et al. 2013)

AI offers several technological solutions that can be tailored to the needs of those
with impairments. Many studies have been conducted in the field of artificial
intelligence. AI has provided around-the-clock care using Robotics for people with
disabilities. AI has helped people to use mobile applications without even clicking
on them. For instance “Siri” in mobiles has enabled people to access mobile
applications without even actually clicking on them. Another example from
Google is “Alexa” which has enabled people to ask for any information without
typing in the search bar. (Lynch, 2018)

Belpaeme et al. (2012) used sensory features, such as facial expression, body
movements and voice recordings, as inputs to a machine learning model
(implemented in a robot) to analyze autistic children’s behavior and engagement
levels for therapy. These input features were then combined with target outputs,
and engagement markers, in this case, to train the model. The study proved the
potential for the robot to adapt to its interactant, influencing participant
engagement. In another study, Sanghvi et al. (2011) used postural expressions,
such as silhouette images of the upper body, as they played chess with a robot to
analyze the engagement levels of autistic children. Another positive outcome was
established through this study; the potential of integrating representative data (as
described above) with an affect recognition model to act as a game mate for
autistic children in the real world. In a different study, Kim et al. (2017) used
audio recordings as input features to analyze the emotional states of autistic
children. These features were fed to the support vector machine model,
integrated with a robot, to assess their social engagement as they played with the
robots. This enhanced audio-based emotion forecast approach discusses the
possibility of sustaining a more natural interaction between autistic children and
the robot, hence allowing the robot to assess the engagement level of the
children more accurately and modify its responses to maintain an interactive
learning environment. Other researchers have explored different input features,
such as facial expressions, body movements, bio signals and vocalizations.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:

This study explores and identifies the various shades of artificial intelligence tools
available and used in educational settings. The study also made a categorization
of identified AI tools in the field of education. The top ten AI tools from identified
categories were gauged for their web metrics to measure their popularity and
usefulness among the global user community.
1.3 SCOPE:
This study delves into the intricate details of AI tool adoption within the age group
of 18-65+, categorizing tools into Research and academic AI writing tools, Content
creation AI tools and AI tools for Specially-abled individuals. The study exclusively
uses the data that was gathered in August –September(2023) and adds a global
perspective by analyzing rankings on a global, national, and category level as well
as other critical metrics. The study makes an effort to offer a comprehensive
understanding of user engagement by carefully examining the distribution of age
and gender among the audience as well as important metrics like bounce rate,
followers, marketing channel distribution, top keywords, and total app visits. The
study describes the unique dynamics of AI tool usage and provides valuable
insight into the practical uses and applications of these tools.
1.4 OBJECTIVES:

1. To explore and identify AI tools created for Education and Research.

2. To categorize identified AI tools into broad categories associated with


education and research.

3. To identify the top ten AI tools from identified categories based on web
metrics.

4. To gauge the webometrics /web traffic of selected AI tools.

5. To determine the audience demographics such as age and gender distribution.

6. To determine the user base for various marketing channel distributions.

7. To find the bounce rate and followers of each AI tool.


8. To determine the total number of keywords utilized by each AI tool.

1.5 METHODOLOGY:

The following phases constitute the study's methodology:

PHASE I:

This phase involved examining a wide range of information sources to obtain an


overview of the current state of research on AI tools in educational settings and
identify the methodologies employed in earlier studies.

PHASE II:

After the initial exploration of AI tools in education and research, the AI resources
were divided into three categories: Research And Academic Writing AI Tools,
Content Creation AI Tools and AI Tools For Specially Abled. Subsequently, an
organized approach was utilized to collect pertinent data, commencing with the
establishment of crucial search terms for every classification. The terms "AI tools
for academic research," "AI tools for researchers," and "AI tools in education"
were selected for the first category. Similarly, keywords such as: "AI content
writing tools", "Best AI content creations tool" and "AI tools for disabled", "AI
tools for disabilities", were defined for the second and third categories
respectively. After that, Google was chosen as the primary search engine.
Following that, an assessment was conducted on the top 10 search results that
appeared on the webpage concerning the three categories, for all three
categories inclusion criteria were established ensuring that the chosen results
aligned with the theme. Conversely, exclusion criteria were applied to filter out
results containing irrelevant information. It was observed some of the search
results would list more than one AI tool. This was more so because a number of
individuals and platforms have shortlisted AI tools in the selected field. This acted
as a great help for the current study.

PHASE III:
The selection of the data collection method was made in the third stage. To
collect the necessary data about the identified AI tools it was agreed that the
study would use a web crawling/web scraping technique. To provide web
analytics, web traffic, and performance of AI-driven apps, websites like Adobe
Analytics, StatCounter, Google Analytics 360, and Similar Web were chosen.
However, due to the fact these are toll-based, Similar Web was selected for the
study. Similar Web gives data on website traffic, referrals, search terms, and other
topics. It is a useful tool for digital marketing and competitive analysis since users
can examine website traffic, visitor demographics, and interaction metrics.

PHASE IV:

After accessing Similar Web, the required data was collected, tabulated, and
analyzed which is presented in Chapter IV of this report.

EXPLORING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN
EDUCATION

2.1 ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: AN OVERVIEW
The use of computers in various areas of the education sector, and more especially,various
departments in educational institutions, such as the development of computer-aided
instruction and learning(CAI/L) in classroom interactions,was made possible by advances in
computers and related computing technologies that built on earlier research into programmed
instructions from the mid-1900s(Chen,Chen & Lin,2020).
The use of computers in education has increased in various ways thanks to later developments
in computer and computer-related technologies such as networking,the internet, the World
Wide Web and increased processing, computing and other capabilities, including various task-
oriented programs and software packages. Specifically, in several divisions of educational
institutions the advancement of computer and information communication technologies over
time has facilitated the creation of artificial intelligence. According to Coppin, artificial
intelligence is the ability of computers to adapt to new settings, deal with developing scenarios,
solve problems, provide answers, devise plans and carry out a variety of other tasks that call for
a level of intelligence that is often present in humans(Coppin,2004).
When John McCarthy organized a two-month workshop at Dartmouth College in the United
States in the 1950s, artificial intelligence (AI) was born. McCarthy first used the term "artificial
intelligence" in the workshop proposal in 1956.The hypothesis that will serve as the foundation
for the study of artificial intelligence. In theory, any facet of learning or any other characteristic
of intelligence can be so pre-concisely described that it can be replicated by a machine. There
will be an attempt to learn how to program robots to speak, create abstractions and concepts,
and solve problems of all of issues that are now exclusively human-related, and better
themselves(Zawacki-Ritcher et al.,2019).
The scientific objective of AI is to comprehend intelligence by creating computer programs that
behave intelligently through symbolic inference, or internal machine reasoning. Definition of AI
is not independent of time. It provides an assessment of any system by being mindful of the
time(Sing,Mishra & Sagar,2013).
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a field of engineering that applies new ideas and innovative ways to
solve difficult problems. Computers may eventually surpass human intelligence if
advancements in software development, technological speed, and capacity are sustained.
Current cybernetics has made a significant contribution to AI development that cannot be
overlooked(Hamet & Trambaly,2017).AI is a concept that is defined as a system’s ability to
correctly interpret external data, to learn from such data and to use that learning to
achievespecific goals and tasks through flexible adaptation(Kaplan & Haenlein,2019).AI is based
on the development of autonomous agents that can reason and plan towards their goal without
any built-in knowledge base of their environment(Gurkaynak ,Yilmaz & Haksever,2016).

2.2 DEFINITIONS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Some definitions of AI evaluate success in terms of how closely it resembles human


performance, while others evaluate it in terms of how far it deviates from an idealized
conception of intelligence
Haugeland viewsartificial intelligence as “the existing new effort to make computers
think machines with minds, in the full and literal sense.”(Haugeland,1985)

Bellman defined artificial intelligence as “The automation of activities that we associate


with human thinking, activities such as decision-making, problem-solving,
learning.”(Bellman,1978)

Charniak and McDermott expressed the term Artificial intelligence as “The study of
mental faculties through the use of computational models.” (Charniak &
McDermott,1985).

Winston describes Artificial intelligence as “the study of computations that make it


possible to perceive, reason and act.”(Winston,1992).
Kurzweil writes that“The art of creating machines that perform functions
that require intelligence when performed by people.”(Kurzweil,1990).

Ritch and Knight expressed the term Artificial intelligence as "The study of
how to make computers do things at which, at the moment, people are
better." (Rich & Knight,1991).

Poole et al., write that “Computational Intelligence is the study of the


design of intelligent agents.”(Poole et al.,1998)

Nilsson defined the term artificial intelligence as “AI ... is concerned with
intelligent behavior in artefacts. (Nilsson,1998)

Now we can state informally our definition: AI will be such a program which in an
arbitrary world will cope not worse than a human(Dobrev,2004).AI may be
defined as: “the ability to hold two different ideas in mind at the same time and
still remain the ability to function”. But AI must include the learning from past
experience, reasoning for the decision making, inference power and quick
response. Also it must be able to take decisions on the basis of priorities and
tackle complexity and ambiguity(Mustapha, Haruna & Muhammad,2020).

2.3 APPLICATIONS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE


Smart Homes: Smart home technologies have helped in metamorphosis of authentic
conventional homes to a well-connected hi-fi home, a more customized one. With the help of a
technology that utilizes various types of sensors, wireless connections and algorithms, we are
able to create a home that serves our needs in a more effective way. Smart homes are able to
control various home activities such as room temperature, lightings, irrigation in the
garden based on prevailing weather conditions, gap and shutting of doors and windows and
presenting maximum security to burglary. These homes help in energy conservation via
switching of lights whenever it is unnecessary, halting the glide of water when no longer in use
in use and so forth(Guo et al.,2019).

Gaming: A great impact is made on the industry of gaming by Artificial Intelligence. Itis
one of the fastest-growing frameworks in the planet. Using a technique known as brute force
technology, machines scan thousands of moves at once. Microsoft Xbox employs artificial
intelligence to detect body motion and reply to gamers in a more exciting way. Even
though computers are not as intelligent as humans, they cannot be vanquished in a chess
gamesince artificial intelligence is used. In this industry, we are seeing Himalayan
improvements, but the truth is that it is still taking baby steps(Furman & Seamans,2019).

Medical technologies: AI in health industry is growing day by day feeding to requirements of


humanity. Deep learning algorithms analyses data retrieved from wearable watches, artificial
pace-makers and other monitoring sensors placed in a body of an individual in various
domains of medicine. The technology of augmented medicine allows medical practitioners to
give a greater personalized cure to their patients. Be that as it may, it is unwelcomed by
physicians who are not okay with the evolution of contemporary medicine. There is a necessity
for the upgradation of medical curriculum based on the state-of-the-art technologies evolving
in this field. The elements of AI have helped in the detection of many diseases such as epilepsy,
hypoglycemia and atrial fibrillation(Davenport & Kalakota,2019).

Language processing: Language understanding, or the process of converting a spoken language


to its written form and translating one language to another without any semantic errors, is one
of the notable domains where AI plays a role. There are various domains in the fields, such as
comprehending speech and converting it to writing form, translating a dialect, linguistic
information processing, addressing Al systems, etc. With the help of 3D holograms, students
will understand the connections between atoms, complex human organs, magnetic-
fields,planet formation, and more in an easy and fun way(Nalbant,2021).

2.4 PURPOSE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE


1. Artificial Intelligence enhances the speed, precisionand effectiveness of human efforts
in financial institutions(Valavanidis,2023).
2. Artificial intelligence uses progressive learning algorithms that allow the data to carry
out the programming. It can find structure and irregularities in the data to be used in
classification and/or prediction(Sharma &Garg,2022).
3. AI can analyze factory Internet of Things (IoT) data(Valavanidis,2023)
4. Artificial intelligence has given us unequally rational agents in hierarchies of corporate
control that have subsumed market functions(Benthall & Goldenfien,2021).
5. Artificial intelligence (AI) allows machines to model, or even improve upon, the
capabilities of the human mind(Valavanidis,2023).

2.5 ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN EDUCATION


The technology of today has ingrained itself into the fabric of time. Technology has altered not
only how individuals live their lives but also how we work, learn, and communicate. Innovations
of various kinds are constantly being developed, making our daily activities and jobs more
useful and efficient. The term artificial intelligence, also known as AI (artificial intelligence),
which is currently stealing attention as a tool to operate like humans, is a more recent
technological development(Fitria,2021).Artificial intelligence (AI) has found greater use in the
education sector, surpassing the traditional perception of AI as a supercomputer to incorporate
computer systems embedded(Chen ,Chen & Lin,2020). Artificial intelligence is still in its early
stages, but it has already impacted education. People can learn with the aid of educational
assistants like bots thanks to AI systems. In order to improve education quality, especially with
regard to information and communication technology, the educational community must adapt
to technological advancements(Fitria,2021).
In general, there are four areas of AIED in academic support services, and institutional
and administrative services such as(Kegam,2020).
1. Profiling and Prediction: The basis for many AI applications are learner models or
profiles that allow prediction,for example of the likelihood of a student dropping out of
a course or being admitted to a program, in order to offer timely support or to provide
feedback and guidance in content related matters throughout the learning process.
Classification, modeling and prediction are an essential part of educational data mining
(Krishna, Kumar & Sri,2018).
2. Assessment and Evaluation:studies also largely focused on the level of teaching and
learning. In order to gain an overview of student opinion about online and distance
learn-ing at their institution & academics(Ozturk,Cicek & Ergul,2017).
3. Adaptive systems and Personalization:Most of the studies on adaptive systems are
situated at the teaching and learning level, with four cases considering the institutional
and administrative level(Zawacki-Richter et.al.,2019).
4. Intelligent tutoring systems: All of the studies investigating intelligent tutoring systems
(ITS) are only concerned with the teaching and learning level, except for one that is
contextualized at the institutional and administrative level. The latter presents StuA, an
interactive and intelligent student assistant that helps newcomers in a college by
answering queries related to faculty members, examinations, extracurricular activities,
library services, etc(Lodhi etal.,2018).

The presentation of the digital learning content that is currently being created is made possible
by the use of AI. Thick textbooks can now be presented in a way that is shorter, simpler for
students to read, and easier to understand, like study guides, material summaries, or brief
notes(Fitria,2021).The field of AI is both innovative and derivative(Kegam,2020).As a
cornerstone of the industrial revolution, AI 4.0 is crucial to supporting the technologically
mediated learning process. Artificial intelligence (AI) is the process of simulating human thought
and creating machines that can perform cognitive tasks, such as learning automatically from
pre-programmed data and information, in order to behave like humans. Artificial intelligence
has been incorporated into many applications as a benefit(Fitria,2021).
Artificial super intelligence, general AI, and narrow AI are the three categories of AI. The most
prevalent and developed type of AI to date is narrow AI. It is highly goal-oriented and employs
machine learning methods to complete a single task or goal (e.g., image and facial recognition,
Alexa/Siri). AI considered to be on par with humans is known as general (or deep) AI abilities
(for instance, AI that is able to recognize the requirements and feelings of other intelligent
beings).Thirdly, Artificial Super intelligence is AI that is superior to humans in terms of
intelligence (much like AI in science fiction films is portrayed as being superior to humans in
every way(Hassani et al.,2020) .These tools are being quickly incorporated into classrooms. K–
12 education is incorporating an increasing number of artificial intelligence education
products(Yufeia et al.,2020).
Literature Studies demonstrate the use of artificial intelligence in education with some
factors(Yufeia et al.,2020).
i. Automatic grading system: While AI might not ever be ready to actually replace
human grading, it’s obtaining pretty shut. It’s currently potential for academics to
alter grading for nearly every kind of multiple alternative and fill-in-the-blank testing
and automatic grading of student writing might not be so much behind(Neha,2020).

ii. Teacher's assessment:AI technologies such as image recognition, prediction system and
computer vision provide convenience for teaching assessment. In the teaching process,
the assessment of students is an essential part. In traditional teaching, it takes a long
time for teachers to complete the assessment tasks, such as question preparation,
scoring, performance evaluation, and test paper analysis. AI makes teaching evaluation
methods more diverse, the evaluation process more scientific, and the evaluation
results more accurate(Huang et.al,2021)
iii. Personalized learning:Personalized learning is a systematic learning design that adapts
learning to the personal strengths, preferences, needs and goals of an individual learner.
It leads to a comprehensive learning experience by ensuring a wide choice of new
disciplines and skills development(Tapalova & Zhiyenbayeva,2022).

v. Adaptive learning:AI promotes the development of adaptive learning, in which data
mining, intelligent teaching systems, learning analytics, and real-time analysis are
applied in adaptive learning. Adaptive learning attempts to incorporate all aspects of
testing, teaching, learning, and practice into the adaptive learning system to facilitate
students’ learning (Van Der Vorst & Jelicic, 2019).

vi. Augmented reality/virtual reality:The development of virtual reality (VR), augmented


reality (AR), hearing and sensing technologies is conducive to the reform of teaching
environment. Utilize ubiquitous computing technology to realize the integration of
physical space and virtual space to create virtual classrooms and virtual
laboratories(Encalada & Sequera, 2017).

vii. Intelligent campus:The intelligent campus is an important place for talent training, and
the application of AI technology to build a smart campus. It has become a new
development trend in the education field (Dong et al., 2020).
The development of systems that are equally effective as one-on-one human tutoring is a
priority for the Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) community(VanLehn,2011).
Significant strides have been made in that direction over the past 25 years. A typical example of
AIED practices, however, has frequently involved a student using a computer to solve step-
based problems that were focused on domain-level knowledge in subjects like science and
mathematics because the human tutor/teacher was enforced as the gold standard(Trilling &
Fadel,2009).
However, the introduction of 21st-century competencies and other recent changes to
educational practices and theories are not taken into account in this example.The value of
general skills and competencies like creativity is emphasized by the 21st-century competency
approach to education. In collaborative learning environments, today's classrooms aim to
incorporate authentic practices that draw from real world issues. The field of AIED must change
in order to remain relevant and have a greater impact(Marrone, Taddeo &Hill,2022). An
emerging interdisciplinary field called artificial intelligence in education (AIED) uses AI
technology in education to change and advance the teaching process and educational method,
design, and evaluation(Xu & Ouyang,2022).The use of AI technologies, such as chatbots,
automatic marking systems, intelligent tutoring systems, and platforms for predicting student
success, in education is known as AI in education (Chiu et al.,2023).The AIED field has witnessed
significant developments in the last twenty-five years. AIED refers to using AI application
programs or technologies in educational settings to facilitate decision-making, teaching, or
learning. AI could play various roles in educational settings. The advancement of
emergingcomputer technologies such as robot control, sensing devices, quantum computing,
wearable devices, and the popularity of 5G wireless communication technologies and mobile
has provided new opportunities andappearances for applying AI to learning and teaching
design(Nalbant,2021). With more usage of artificial intelligence in education, major
transformations can be foreseen in the education systems and its processes. Artificial
intelligence could help teachers improve personalized education for their students. Artificial
intelligence can provide access to appropriate and better learning opportunities for excluded
people and communities, people with disabilities, refugees, people out of school, and those
living in isolated communities. Research shows how effective individually tailored approaches
can be presented with the support of artificial intelligence techniques and intelligent learning
environments(Gocen & Aydemir,2021). The use of AI in education also raises concerns about
privacy, bias, and the dehumanization of the learning experience. For example, AI-based tools
can collect large amounts of personal data about students, which could be misused or stolen.
Additionally, there is a risk that AI algorithms may perpetuate biases that exist in society,
resulting in unequal educational opportunities. Moreover, some critics argue that using AI in
education could dehumanize the learning experience, where students interact more with
machines than with human teachers, resulting in a less engaging and less fulfilling learning
experience(Pazmino,2023).
Governments and education institutions are thinking of preparing learners to thrive in an
artificial intelligence-saturated future and for the increasing presence of it in all aspects of
human activity. Researches in the field of artificial intelligence mainly focuses on components of
intelligence such as learning, problem-solving, reasoning, decision making and using
language etc(Alam ,Hasan & Raza,2022).

2.6 IMPORTANCE OF AI IN EDUCATION

Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) concerns mainly about the development of


“computers which perform cognitive tasks, usually associated with human minds, particularly
learning and problem-solving AIED has become a field of scientific research for more than 30
years. Interest in understanding and improving the adoption of AI techniques for educational
purposes is higher than it has ever been, not only within educational institutions but also in
government sectors(Chen et al.,2020). AI is used in typical problems such as Pattern
recognition, Natural language processing and more. This system is working throughout the
world as an artificial brain. Intelligence involves mechanisms, and AI research has discovered
how to make computers carry out some of them and not others(Bansal & Bansal,2012).

ADVANTAGES OF AI IN EDUCATION

Access to Information: In the past, it was complicated to find the information sought
among thousands of books by visiting libraries to access information. With artificial intelligence
and technology development, it has become much easier and faster to reach the desired
information by pressing just a few buttons. Virtual assistants used on phones have provided
speedier access to the desired information with voice commands(Nalbant,2021).
Education at any time. Young people spend a lot of time on the go. They prefer doing everyday
tasks using their smartphones or tablets. AI-based applications provide an opportunity to study
in free time, spending ten or fifteen minutes. Additionally, the students can get feedback from
tutors in a real-time mode(Kuprenko,2020)
Personalization in Education: One teacher in the classroom cannot meet the expectations of all
students. Artificial intelligence can provide a teacher for every student. Students can listen to
the part they do not understand over and over again. Thus, the student can personalize their
learning(Nalbant,2021).
Helpful feedback :AI cannot solely facilitate academics and students to craft courses that are
bespoke to their wants, however it may give feedback toeach concerning the success of the
course asan entire. These sorts of AI systems enable students to urge the support they
have and for professors to search out areas wherever they'll improve instruction(Neha,2020)
Global Knowledge: We do not know the education offered in a different language can be
translated into our language with artificial intelligence systems. We can quickly get an
education and learn a language that we do not know at all. In addition, we can translate texts
written in different languages and adapt them to our language(Nalbant,2021).
24/7 without interruption: The use of chatbots can provide 24/7 (i.e. 24 h per day, seven days
per week) academic advice to students, serving as a source of information for many aspects of
university life, including timetabling and module organization(Rouhiainen,2019)
Removing Barriers: Artificial intelligence has made it much easier for special(disabled) students
to access information. The aim is to ensure the full and equal participation of special (disabled)
students in social life. Thus, disabled individuals are integrated into independent and free
energy. Visually impaired people can receive education with systems that convert text to
sound, and hearing-impaired people can receive training with systems that convert audio to
text. Individuals with walking disabilities and sick people can attend both classes and meetings
from their homes without going to school, and they do not fall behind(Nalbant,2021).

DISADVANTAGES OF AI IN EDUCATION
Technology Addiction: Students interact with each other on social platforms rather than social
interaction. Since students spend too much time with technology, they cannot allocate enough
time to their education and lessons and cannot provide motivation. Since a student spends
almost 90% of his free time in virtual environments and games, he cannot give the necessary
importance to his education. It is one of the issues that parents complain about the
most(Nalbant,2021).

Reduces Students' Capacity for Thought: The use of artificial intelligence in schools has a
biggest drawback that it reduces kids' ability to think critically and increases their reliance on
technology rather than teaching them how to complete tasks independently(Careerera,2021).

Negative Impact on Social Life: Before the development of artificial intelligence, students
were doing more social and group work. With the development of technology, work has
become more individual. Tablets and computers, which are the closest friends of the
individual, have replaced the libraries used to be visited by the class for research and
study.Now, the ability of a single individual to access information with a few keys has isolated
individuals and given them an asocial personality(Nalbant,2021).

Reduced Human Interaction:Despite various drawbacks, artificial intelligence can be a useful


educational tool. One drawback is that because they don't interact with actual humans during
class, pupils are unable to practice and gain social skills. When they graduate from high school
and need these kinds of relationships for their jobs or even just social contacts as adults, it
becomes difficult for them(Careerera,2021).

Negative Impact on Health: As the development of artificial intelligence increases competition


among students, this situation will stress them. It will put pressure on them. In this case, it can
negatively affect the mental health and psychology of students. In addition, technological
products cause various health problems due to the radiation they emit. Health problems such
as eye disorder, nerve compression, neck, waist, and wrist pain can also be seen in individuals
who spend a lot of time with technology(Nalbant,2021).

Probability of Causing Unemployment: The fact that machines replace people by doing the
work that people do is an indicator of unemployment. As artificial intelligence develops, people
may become dependent on machines and robots. This reduces people's creativity and causes
them to be lazy individuals. If we consider unemployment in terms of education, robotic
teachers can replace ordinary teachers. Many jobs in the education sector are at risk. Unlike
humans, robots are less likely to make mistakes(Nalbant,2021).
Lack of Creativity: Although AI has been tasked with creating everything from computer code
to visual art, it lacks original thought "It can only know what it knows. It can't think outside the
box, no pun intended(Pratt,2023).
Income distribution imbalance: Some individuals can have the most advanced technologies
because their incomes are high, while people with low incomes have less developed technology
or no technology at all. This situation leads to tremendous unfair competition between
students who can and cannot access technology due to financial opportunities. Examples of this
can be seen today. During the Covid-19 pandemic, students living in rural areas could not
receive online education because they did not have internet and computers. In addition, this
situation caused them to be deprived of their right to education. In developed cities, since
students can access online education very quickly, it has caused a severe imbalance of
education levels between the two groups. As a result, the level of education decreases when
the financial situation is not good and there is no access to technology. In contrast, the level of
education increased in cities with good economic conditions and development (Nalbant,2021).

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Artificial intelligence is changing the world.It is ubiquitous in almost all domains of life.We have
applied AI in all domains including education sector AI radically changing teaching and learning
beyond traditional classrooms.

In particular reference to implication of AI in education Beijing normal university and university


of Helsinki have been engaging in productive cooperation in the Sino –Finnish Joint
learninginnovation institute (JoLii) since 2016.One important theme of research cooperation
has focused on artificial intelligence (AI) .JoLii has organized workshops and conferences on AI
related themes since 2018 seeking to understand what AI mean in learning and education. In
these conferences and workshops, Finnish and Chinese researchers from the USA have
explored new scenarios of what AI means in learning. The joint triangle conferences for
intelligence digital tools for learning and education were organized at Stanford University in
October 2018, university of Helsinki in February 2019, and Beijing normal university in June
2019. During these conferences and workshop, researchers emphasized the need to start
research systematically and to understand how AI is changing humans and machines learning
together.

Artificial intelligence technology where machines can learn and understand like human (Fitria,
2021) .AI implemented in world of education technology by this teachers can more easily and
more deeply (Fitria , 2021b) students can also learn without encoding difficulties.

AI- powered tools in education (AIED)


According to Pearson (2016) in model based tutors can reproduce the cognitive and affective
state of learners engage students in learning experiences that involve active discussion
promote reflection and self-awareness. And even use social simulation models that take into
account learners cultural and social norms.

Pearson (2016) affirms that most difficult part of evaluating adaptive tool is to discover where
exactly they truly adapt. There are usually three places where adapting usually happens :

 CONTENT
 ASSESSMENT AND
 SEQUENCE.
The Pearson adaptive tool MY ENGLISH LAB (MEL). The AI Nahda School for girls in UNITED
ARAB EMIRATES, reported a very satisfactory experience with the AI tool. The English language
teacher Bridin Harmelt gave feedback that students remained interested in platforms even
during last class of the day (Kochannek and Ripley; 2014)

Chatbot have been in use for educational purposes for quite some time. These chatbots can be
categorized into those with education intentionalityand those without. Chatbots without
education intentionality are used in administrative tasks such as student guidance and
assistance. Chatbots with education intentionality are used in fostering teaching and learning .A
study guided by research question: How can Indian education sector benefit from adopting
chatbot technologies? For carrying the study an empirical research design was used.
Quantitative method was used through the data collection from surveys of some prominent
higher educational institutions using CHATBOT technology .Stratified random sampling was
used to a sample of 47 students for study. 60.9% respondents gave information that CHATBOT
was quickest communication channel followed by online chat with 19% ,telephone chat with
8.9%, face to face 6.5% this indicated CHATBOT technology is appreciated as Highest Quick
response time. On the likely predicted use cases for Chabot technology in education
institution10.6% of respondents indicated that Chabot are used for tutoring 48.9% for learning
feedback, 68.1% for paying fee, and 68.1% for being more convenient that other methods of
communication .76.6% for resolving a problem and 51.1% of student indicated that likely
predicted use cases for Chabot in education institutes is for getting quick assessment s .This
result indicated that Chabot is most likely used by students in resolving a problem as well as
convenience in Comparison to other communication method .With eight studies dealing with
artificial intelligence and mobile apps that assists post secondary student with attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder and other disabilities with academic works was conducted (N Sandu, E
Gide- 2019). Under study seven: In 2020 an survey was conducted to ask 35 students with
ADHD and 74 student without disabilities whether they use 20 recommended apps and which
ones they found helpful the survey exclude student with specific learning disorder because
study did not want to confound the finding. With technology intended for student with learning
disabilities study found both group were familiar with drop box, ever note , forest , timer, quiz
let, read and write .This study showed that students with ADHD and student without
disabilities used same app and found same apps helpful. (fichten et al.)

The rapid advancement of computing and information processing techniques has speed up the
progress and application of artificial intelligence which aims to enables to computers to
perform tasks via, simulating intelligent human behaviors , such as inferencesing , analysis and
decision making ( Duan, Edward and Dwivedi ,2019; Topol,2019) .
In past decades significant progress has been reported by researchers who have conducted
artificial studies.Through techniques such as conventional machine learning or modern deep
learning of products can provide intelligent services by inferring or behaving like humans.

Zhang (2016) states that virtual mentor (VM) is a multimedia integrated e -learning
environment that stressesinteraction,personalization, and intelligence.

learning-solution) is an application that is widely used in university of Europe and America.

When it comes to US and China each has a unique balance of strengths .The European union
and united states and China each have a unique balance of strength . For example, European
Union and US are nearly equal and ahead of china in term AI expertise and research skills

DEVELOPMENT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE VOICE ASSISTANT


Artificial intelligence voice assistant is a type of speech semantic application technology which
is mainly applied to speech recognition, semantic understanding, speech synthesis and other
intelligent speech application devices. By utilizing the voice assistant, users experience of using
electronic products such as mobile phones is better. In recent years, voice interactive
technologyhas become the key development direction of artificial intelligence technology.Since
Apple launched Siris’s voice assistance in 2011,various electronics

Companies have imitated Siri’s voice assistant mode and added the voice assistant function to
company products such as Xiami’s Xiaoai classmate, Google assistant, Baidu mapvoice.
According to survey data of China telecom terminal research and test center, the user
awareness rate of voice assistant is as high as 95.6% and use rate is 58.6% .More than half of
mobile phone users use voice assistance in daily life. Obviously, artificial intelligent voice
assistant is playing an increasingly important role. In past 60 years, the technology of voice
assistants has developed rapidly .From the combination of three robust acoustic models at
beginning, the accuracy rate of voice assistants has reached the level of human
stenographers ,reaching 95% accuracy .(Y.huang)

The increasing application of Artificial intelligence in education (AIEd) demand interdisciplinary
approaches, while most AI research is carried out in STEM fields( Zawacki-Richter, Marin ,Bond
and Gouverneur ,2019)
Consistently ,a few recent literature reviews have highlighted the lack of educational
perspectives in AIEd research(e.g., Chen, Xie,Zou, and Hwang,2020; Hinojo-Lucena, Aznar-Diaz,
Caceres-Reche and Romero- Rodriguez,2019;Zawacki- Richter, Marin, Bond, and
Gouverneur,2019) .In addition ,researchers have voiced concerns about the absence of
educational theories and models, as found in AI enabled e-learning research published in the
past two decades(Tang, Chang, and Hwang, 2021). It is also worth noting that AIEd innovation
remain at early , experimental stage and there is few collaboration with educational institution
s in related intervention such as AI enabled adaptive system (kabudi, pappas and olsen,
2021) .As a result,There has been critical gap between what AIEd technologies could do and
how they actually implemented in authentic educational setting (Bates et al.,2020;Kabudi et
al., 2021) .As an effort to further advance AI technologies for education , this article intends to
help the broader AIEd community, including educators, educational researchers.AI technology
creators and other stakeholders to build a deeper understanding in AIEd ,including its current
state, potentials, challenges and future direction :

Challenges and Research Issues Of Ai:

computer program, application, robots. For example, some robots can interact with human via
visual and audio tracking technologies(Lathuiliere, Masse , Mesejo and HORAUD,2019;
Okuno,Nakadai, and Kitano,2002) and medical systems can assist human experts in detecting
potential diseases or making judgments by analyzing a large set of data.(Li,Li, and
Niu,2020;Zhu, 2020).

With the field of AIED established for over 30 years now (O’Shea and Self ,1986), application of
AI in education have grown even the additional attention of researchers from the fields of both
computer science and education in recent years with rapid advancements in AI .It can be
foreseen that a growing number of studies will be conducted which apply AI to educational
settings as well as discuss the potential approaches of promoting and teaching AI knowledge at
all educational levels.
One of the crucial objectives of AI in education is the provision of personalized learning
guidance or supports to individual students based on their learning status , preferences, or
personal characteristics(Hwang,2014). From the perspective of precision education, which
emphasizes the need to provide Prevention and intervention practices to individual learners by
Analyzing their learning status or behaviors , enabling learning.

System to serve as an intelligent tutor by incorporating experienced teachers knowledge and


intelligence into the decision making process pf the system is a crucial issue( Hart,2016) .Using
AI in education(AIED) has created new opportunities for designing productive learning activities
and developing better technology- enhanced learning application or environments.However , it
remains a challenges for most researchers and practitioners from the fields of both computers
and education to implement relevant activities or systems(kay,2012).

USE OF AI IN EDUCATION SECTOR:


Use of AI in education can not only promote the learning effectiveness and augment the
human intelligence during the learning process, but may also raise potential ethical issues
(Buckingham Shum and Luckin,2019) such as digital hegemony In education, power
relationship among learners, teachers and AI systems and digital divide .It is essential for AIED
researchers and practitioners to take these issues seriously and to seek possible solution from
various aspects, including technological solutions.

BENEFITS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE


Application of (AI )artificial intelligence can increase value by personalizing good , enhancing
customer service and helping to create new product categories , business models significant
increments in productivity innovation, growth and job creation have been predicted using AI in
recent times .Labor productivity is expected to rise by 11.37% by 2035. Furthermore AI is
predicted to favorable contribute to the united nation sustainable development goals, and
capabilities of AI to handle health concerns such as COVID-19 health epidemic are remarkable.
AI system has potential to shorten time it takes to develop drugs and vaccine.

ETHICAL ISSUES IN CONCERN WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE


Significant ethical and legal issue also exist, include these:

 Protection
 Transparency

 Responsibility.

The future of Artificial intelligence tools is incredibly promising!As technology advances AI will
likely become more integrated into various aspects of our lives, enhancing efficiency,
automation, and problem solving across numerous industries .There will be ethical
consideration and challenges to navigate, but the potential for positive impact is substantial.
Students use AI tools for various purpose, such as RESEARCH, STUDYING, AND PRODUCTIVITY.AI
driven educational platforms offer personalized learning experiences, adaptive tutoring and
tools for plagiarism detection and citation formatting. Additionally, language translation apps,
note taking assistants, and collaborative tools leveraging AI are becoming increasingly popular
among students for streamlinedworkflows and enhanced learning. Tools like GRAMMARLY and
other AI driven writing assistance application have a bright future in academia. These tools not
only help with grammar and spelling but also aid improving writing style clarity and overall
quality of academic papers. As they continue to advance, they will likely become integrated into
academic writing process, offering students and researchers valuable support in crafting well-
structured polished, and properly cited document. In near future they will address more
complex writing requirements. AI’s greatest gift to students with the students capable of
gaining greater academic success. As AI based applications have created for personalized
learning. Beyond traditional academic setting have to spend a great bit of time in administrative
duties and preparing documents . But teachers will be able to automate these tasks with this
technology, having more time to spend on educating students reducing time consumption of
teachers on not so productive tasks.

CHAPTER V

FINDINGS AND CONCLUSION


5.1 Findings:
The study provides insights into the current level of adoption and utilization of Artificial
Intelligence-driven tools among people belonging to different age categories. It was found that:

1. In the category of Research and Academic Writing tools, Grammarly.com, among


the selected top 10 AI-driven tools, is the top choice of the people since
Grammarly.com is more versatile (covering a wide range of population, from
people associated with the education sector to people belonging to the business
sector) than other AI Research tools. Also, it has a wide variety of features like
Grammar checker; Citation generator; Plagiarism checker; essay checker; tone
detector; snippets to name a few.
2. “ProWritingAid.com”, a Research and Academic writing tool, has the highest
Bounce Rate. It may be because ProWritingAid.com does not offer any mobile
application for Android and iOS; and has slower editing when a large segment of
text is added to edit.
3. While conducting Audience Demographic (Age) study, it was found that people
belonging to the age group of 18-34 yrs are much familiar with the usage of the
Artificial Intelligence-driven tools. It may be because people of this age group
being much tech-savvy in nature.
4. The Audience Demographic (Gender) study in the category of Research and
Academic Writing tools, revealed that the percentage of female users is higher
than the male users.
5. While calculating the usage of Marketing Channels by the selected top 10 AI-
driven tools in all the three categories (i.e., Research and Academic Writing
tools; Content Creation AI tools; and AI tools for persons with special needs.), it
was found that the traffic in all the tools are driven from the Direct Channel of
Marketing.
6. In the category of Content Creation AI tools, “Character.ai”, among the other top
10 tools, has the highest Global, Country, and Category rank which reveals that it
is the most used and visited tools. It may be because character.ai has more real-
life appearance than other chatbots and it feels like we are speaking to a real
human being. Also, it has the ability to build our own characters to interact with.
7. “Podcastle.ai” has the highest Bounce Rate in the category of Content Creation.
It may be because Podcastle.ai does not have a multi-tract recording which an
efficient AI recording Software must have. While “Character.ai”, has the lowest
Bounce rate making it the top choice of the people for content creation
activities.
8. Majority of the AI powered Content Creation tools are used by the people
belonging to the age group 25-34 yrs which indicates that people of this age
group are technologically proficient.
9. The Audience Demographic (Gender) study in the category of Content Creation
revealed that the percentage of male users is higher than that of female users.
10. In the category of AI tools for Differently abled persons, “Quizlet.com” has
topped the list by having highest Global, Country, and Category rank. It indicates
that “Quizlet.com” is mostly preferred by the people because of its varied
features like personalized study modes, magic notes, Q-chat AI tutor, flashcards,
tests, blogs, checkpoints etc.
11. While assessing the Bounce Rate of the AI-driven Content Creation tools, it was
found that “Bemyeyes.com” has the highest Bounce rate. While “Speechify.com”
has the lowest Bounce Rate.
12. While conducting Audience Demographic (age) study, it was observed that the
people belong to the age group of 18-34 yrs, use much AI based tools than the
people of other age group. It has been observed that these people are much
digitally skilled.
13. The Audience Demographic (Gender) study in the category of AI tools for
Differently abled persons disclosed that, in the majority of the listed top 10 tools,
the percentage of male users is higher than the female users.
5.2 Conclusion and Recommendation:
Artificial Intelligence and its usage in different segments of our regular life seem to be
increasing day-by-day and the same is reported in various studies. In the field of education, AI
started making its mark by acting as an aid to support the teaching and learning process. The
use of digital tools and AI in education has the potential to revolutionize teaching and learning
by providing personalized instruction, increasing efficiency, enhancing the learning experience,
improving assessment, and providing valuable data-driven insights. The current study identifies
that both teachers and students needed more understanding on how the application of AI can
benefit them in developing their teaching and learning abilities respectively. It is also identified
that an optimum utilization of this technology may yield better results.

However, it is important to consider the potential drawbacks and limitations of AI-based


educational tools, such as cost, dependence on technology, data privacy concerns, ethical
issues, and technical challenges. Despite of these hurdles, the continual exploration and
refinement of AI applications in education are vital.

Further research is needed to explore how AI-driven tools can be effectively integrated into
teaching and learning activities. Research can also investigate how to address ethical and other
concerns associated with AI in education. This evolution not only enhances current practice but
also opens avenues for innovative educational approaches, shaping a future where AI
contributes significantly to the evolution of learning environments.
