2. Name the property in each of the following:
(i) 6 + (-7) = (-7) + 6 Commutative property under addition.
(ii) (-11) + [(-3) + (-8)] = [(-11) + (-3)] + (-8) Associative property under addition.
(iii) (-9) × [(-4)×(-5)] = [(-9)×(-4)]×(-5) Associative prty. under multiplication.
(iv) 8 – 11 = (-3) (is an integer) Closure property under addition.

3. Evaluate the following:

(i) [(-6) × (-18)] × 12
= 108 × 12
= 1296
(ii) [(-18) + (-12)] + 9
= (-30) + 9
= (-21)
(iii) [(-16) × (-14 - 12)] + 10
= [(-16) ×(-26)] + 10
= 416 + 10
= 426
4. Verify the following statements to be true:
(i) [17 × (−16)] × 12 = 17 × [(−16) × 12], Which property of multiplication is used here?
LHS = [17 × (−16)] × 12 RHS = 17 × [(−16) × 12]
= (-272) × 12 = 17 × (-192)
= (-3264) = (-3264)
Here, LHS = RHS
Hence, the given statement is true.
Associative property for multiplication.
(ii) (−6) × [(−9) + (−11)] = [(−6) × (−9)] + [(−6) × (−11)]. Which property is used here?
LHS = (−6) × [(−9) + (−11)] RHS = [(−6) × (−9)] + [(−6) × (−11)]
= (-6) × (-20) = 54 + 66
= 120 = 120
Here, LHS = RHS
Hence, the given statement is true.

(iii) For 𝑝 = (−2), 𝑞 = 4 and 𝑟 = 2, then verify that 𝑝 ÷ (𝑞 ÷ 𝑟) ≠ (𝑝 ÷ 𝑞) ÷ 𝑟 ≠ (𝑝 ÷ 𝑟) ÷ 𝑞.
𝑝 ÷ (𝑞 ÷ 𝑟) (𝑝 ÷ 𝑞) ÷ 𝑟 (𝑝 ÷ 𝑟) ÷ 𝑞
= (−2) ÷ (4 ÷ 2) = [(−2) ÷ 4] ÷ 2 = [(−2) ÷ 2] ÷ 4
−2
= (−2) ÷ 2 =[4]÷2 = (−1) ÷ 4
1 1
= (−1) = −4 = −4
𝐻𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒, 𝑝 ÷ (𝑞 ÷ 𝑟) ≠ (𝑝 ÷ 𝑞) ÷ 𝑟 ≠ (𝑝 ÷ 𝑟) ÷ 𝑞

(iv) If 𝑎 = 2, 𝑏 = (−3) and 𝑐 = (−5), then verify that (𝑎 + 𝑏) + 𝑐 = 𝑎 + (𝑏 + 𝑐).

Which property of addition is used here?
𝐿. 𝐻. 𝑆. = (𝑎 + 𝑏) + 𝑐
= [2 + (-3)] + (-5)
= (-1) + (-5)
= (- 6)
𝑅. 𝐻. 𝑆. = 𝑎 + (𝑏 + 𝑐)
= 2 + [(-3) + (-5)]
= 2 + (-8)
= (- 6)
L.H.S. = R.H.S. Hence verified.
Associative property of addition is used here.

5. Solve the following with appropriate method:

(i) Write a pair of negative and positive integers (a, b) such that :
a) 𝒂 ÷ 𝒃 = (−𝟓) b) 𝒂 + 𝒃 = 𝟔
𝟐𝟓 ÷ (−5) = (−𝟓) (−9) + 15 = 𝟔
(There can be many other possibilities here)

(ii) The minimum temperature during winters at night in City A is -36°F and
in City B is -12°F. Which city would be colder? How many times would the city be colder
than the other city?
City A will be colder.
It will be three times colder than the other city.

(iii) Every floor of a 20-storey building is 5m high. If a lift moves 2m every second, how long will
it take to move from 3rd floor to 15th floor?
Starting point of the lift = 3rd floor
Finishing point of the lift = 15th floor
Numbers of floors the lift climbed = 15 – 3 = 12 floors
Height of each floor = 5m
Total distance moved by the lift = 5 x 12 = 60m
∴Time taken by lift to move from 3rd floor to 15th floor = 60 ÷ 2 = 30 seconds

(iv) On Monday, a submarine goes underwater at a depth of 450 m from the sea level. Every
day, it goes deeper by 50 m. At what depth will it reach on Wednesday from the sea level?
Depth on Monday = -450 m
Goes deeper by 50 m every day.
On Wednesday it will go down by -100 m.
Depth reached on Wednesday = -450 - 100
= -550 m
The submarine will be at a depth of 550 m on Wednesday.

(v) a) Find the multiplicative inverse of a number which is obtained by dividing the additive
inverse of (-5) by 1.
b) Find the multiplicative identity of a number which is obtained by dividing the additive
inverse of (-5) by 1.
Additive inverse of (-5) is 5.
5
No. obtained by dividing the additive inverse of (-5) by 1 = 1 = 5
1
a) The multiplicative inverse of 5=
5
b) The multiplicative inverse of 5= 1

(vi) A fruit merchant earns a profit of ₹ 4 on selling 1 kg of mangoes, loss of ₹ 1 on selling 1 kg

of grapes and earns neither profit nor loss on selling 1 kg of strawberry. Find his total loss
or profit on selling 20 kg of mangoes, 10 kg of grapes and 5 kg of strawberry in a day.
Profit Amt. for selling 20 kg Mangoes = 4 × 20 = ₹ 80
Loss Amt. for selling 10 kg grapes = (-1) × 10 = (− ₹10)
Profit/Loss Amt. for selling 5 kg strawberries = 0 × 5 = ₹ 0
Total amt. received = ₹ 80 + ₹ (-10)
= ₹ 70
∴ He received a profit of ₹ 70.

(vii) In a quiz 10 questions were asked each to team A and team B. Team A answered 6
questions correctly and did not answer the four questions, whereas team B answered 8
questions correctly and answered the remaining two questions incorrectly. If each correct
answer is awarded (+2) marks, incorrect (-1) marks and 0 marks for not answering the
question, then state which team won the quiz and by how much. What was the score of
Team A and Team B?
Score made by Team A = 6 × (+2) = 12
Score made by Team B = 8 × (+2) + 2 × (-1)
= 16 – 2
= 14
Team A < Team B.
Team B won the quiz by 2 marks.
