• Meteorological Background

Michaung is the fourth tropical cyclone of the year over the Bay of Bengal. Formation of tropical
cyclones in the Bay of Bengal is seasonal with a primary peak formation during the post-monsoon season
(October–December) and a secondary peak formation during the pre- monsoon season (March–May).

• Observed Wind Speeds

Gale wind speeds were observed (1630hr IST of 5th Dec) reaching 90-100 kmph and gusting to 110 kmph
across the west-central Bay of Bengal and along & off south Andhra Pradesh Coast.

• In Andhra Pradesh, the existing RWBCIS (Unlimited liability scheme)


policy expired on November 30,2023. Hence, no impact on the claim
figure is expected.

• Andhra Pradesh PMFBY (80/110 SSM, Limited Liability), substantial


damage across coastal districts was reported due to unseasonal
excess rainfall bought by Cyclone Michaung.

Read More • In Tamil Nadu (PMFBY 60/130 SSM, Limited Liability), the cyclone
primarily affected few northern districts. Paddy, a major crop, may
benefit from recent rainfall, but early harvesting crops like maize are
adversely affected.
