2. How do you describe the other mother? Why do you feel that way?
The Other Mother, also known as the Beldam, is the main adversary in
"Coraline." She initially appears to Coraline as a kind and caring mother figure, but her
true nature is eventually revealed. The Other Mother is tall and lean, with long black
hair and button eyes that represent her hunger for power. She has the ability to create
an appealing but perilous parallel reality for Coraline. Her transformation from a
seemingly nice person to a frightening and manipulating creature heightens the story's
tension and horror. The Other Mother's unwavering pursuit of Coraline and readiness to
go to any length to achieve her objectives make her a dangerous and memorable
enemy.
3. Why does the other mother have significant differences in appearance from
her real mother?
The considerable physical disparities between the Other Mother and Coraline's
genuine mother show their opposing positions as well as the Other Mother's deception.
Coraline's true mother is portrayed as ordinary, whereas the Other Mother, with her
tall, thin frame, long black hair, and button eyes, is unique and terrifying. These
distinctions highlight the Other Mother's supernatural origins and her capacity to
construct a perilous other reality. The visual difference acts as a cautionary note to
Coraline and the audience, reminding them to distinguish between appearances and
reality and emphasizing the perils of falling prey to illusions.
4. What is the conflict in the story? How does the protagonist resolve the
problem?
In "Coraline," the conflict arises when the protagonist, Coraline, discovers a
hidden door leading to an alternate reality controlled by the Other Mother. Initially
appearing loving and caring, the Other Mother reveals her intention to trap Coraline
forever by replacing her eyes with buttons. The conflict revolves around Coraline's
efforts to escape and save herself and her real parents. Through bravery and
resourcefulness, Coraline gathers allies, confronts the Other Mother, and engages in a
battle of wits. She outsmarts the Other Mother, escapes an alternate reality, and
rescues her real parents. Coraline's resolution of the conflict showcases her resilience
and intelligence in overcoming the Other Mother's deceptions.
