Module 7 Learning Activity

The document summarizes key aspects of a between-subjects experimental design study conducted at Rizal Technological University across its campuses in Mandaluyong and Pasig cities. It discusses the importance of random assignment in between-subjects designs, describes a two-matched-groups design where participants are paired based on characteristics and one from each pair is randomly assigned to the treatment or control group, and explains the advantages of a multiple-group design over a two-group design such as increased efficiency, cost savings, enabling more in-depth statistical analysis, and the ability to compare multiple independent variable levels.

Review and Study Questions

1. In a between-subjects design, why is it important to assign subjects to each

treatment condition at random?

Randomly assigning subjects to treatment conditions in a between-subjects design

ensures that the study has internal validity. This means that the participant

assignment has no bearing on the study's findings.

Randomization prevents groups from having too many people with the same

characteristics. This can result in skewed results. Furthermore, random assignment

ensures that all differences between conditions are due to chance.

For large samples, random assignment works well. Even if a confounding variable is

introduced by random assignment, it is likely to be detected when the experiment

is replicated.

2. Describe a two-matched-groups design. How is the matching done?

A matched pairs design is a type of experimental design in which researchers pair

participants based on relevant characteristics. Then, at random, one person from

each pair is assigned to the treatment group and the other to the control group.

3. Explain the advantages of using a multiple-group design rather than a two-

group design.

A multiple-group design (MGD) has several advantages over a two-group design,

including the following.

 Efficiency: MGD facilitates the asking and answering of more questions. It

may also enable more experiments to be conducted.

 Cost: MGD can help you save money on participants.

 Statistical analysis: MGD enables more in-depth statistical analysis.

 Interactions: MGD can reveal variable interactions.

 MGD allows for the comparison of multiple levels of the independent variable.

 Control groups: MGD allows for the inclusion of more control groups.
