Annotated-Assignment 3 Intruction

The teacher uses a facilitator style of instruction, asking questions to encourage thinking. Groups completed instruction together working independently on Chromebooks during free time. Students were engaged in their science lessons taught in their main classroom. When observing several classrooms, culturally relevant materials included science-related posters and the periodic table. Teachers gave countdowns to signal upcoming subject changes and used attention signals like "waterfall" to gain quiet. A student with behavioral issues was seated separately with a specialist to assist with work. Fifth grade had a fixed schedule to help with classroom transitions.

ASSIGNMENT 3 (Instruction): Observe any instructional time in your assigned classroom, and record

your observations when presented with the questions below:

Instruction Question 1: What is the posted daily schedule for different subjects or periods? >>>

Fourth grade’s schedule

For the Math’s 5th grade schedule

Instruction Question 2: Is instruction done in small groups, centers, whole groups, individual? >>>

Groups completed all instructions together. They worked on their Chromebooks on their own
when they had free time.

Instruction Question 3: How would you describe your cooperating teacher’s teaching style? >>>

In my opinion, Mrs. Jannette teaches her kids using a facilitator style of instruction. She would
consistently ask questions to the students to keep them thinking.

Instruction Question 4: Does the teacher incorporate the sensory modalities (learning styles)? If so, give
examples. >>>

The light in the reading classroom was noticeably dim. Given that it is typically associated
with bright light, I'm not sure if that qualifies as one of the sensory modalities.

Instruction Question 5: Do the students seem engaged in the lesson(s) that are being presented?
Please explain. >>>

Given that science was being taught in their main homeroom, the students were engaged in the
subject matter and eager to learn.

Instruction Question 6: Explain the use of culturally relevant materials, teaching strategies, class décor,
etc. that meet the needs of today’s culturally diverse student population. >>>

When I was doing this assignment, I had the opportunity to observe several classrooms. I was
in the science classroom, where everything was related to science, including the periodic table,
the solar system, and math-related posters.

Instruction Question 7: Is instructional time managed efficiently? Please explain >>>

The students managed their time well while completing their tasks. With every subject, the
time given was effectively used. Before switching topics, students were given plenty of time
and easily transitioned to the next discussions or subjects.

Instruction Question 8: How does the cooperating teacher handle transitions from one subject or period
to another, and are these transitions efficient? >>>

To give students some advance notice when a subject will change or if the tasks would change,
Mrs. Jannette and all the other teachers that I watched would give them a timed countdown.
Instruction Question 9: List ways that the teacher attempts any “attention getting” commands? (Ex:
Countdown, Light flicker, Heads on Desk) How effective are they? >>>

When the reading teacher said the word "waterfall," the class became aware of her presence,
and the students were told to keep quiet. Sometimes I could see it wasn't working, so she tried
something else. When the teacher said, "Give me five," the students had to raise one hand at
that moment. Students were expected to answer with a single clap when the science teacher
would repeatedly clap her hands. When the kids got too noisy, she had to switch the lights off
and on until the room was quiet.

Instruction Question 10: What specific behavior issues does the teacher have to deal with? How does
the teacher deal with these behavior issues? Be specific. >>>

During my time in Ms.Smalll's fourth-grade class, I was seated next to a behavioral student. It
wasn't until another teacher entered the room that I realized that they were there to observe that
student. He sat in the very back, at a table larger than anyone else's, he was isolated from
everyone else. He appeared to be acting normally except for the fact that he was hyperactive
and constantly trying to speed through his work. The teacher specialist attempted to slow him
down on each work he attempted to complete. I was told that this student appears to go through
different behaviors as if he was bipolar, although that information was never disclosed to me.
He also tends to steal from others including the teacher. Mrs. Smalls during that time didn't
need to handle anything herself since the specialist was there.

Instruction Question 11: Are there any policies or procedures in place that help or hinder instructional
time? If so, explain them and how they help or hinder use of instructional time. >>>

Fifth-grade students must transition from one classroom to another, so the classroom follows a
fixed schedule that helps students know when to get ready for their next class.

Instruction Question 12: What philosophical teaching orientation(s) best describes this teacher? Give
examples. >>>

Mrs. Jannette truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed. I could tell by the way
she teaches and how engaged her students are in her class. She had a positive attitude toward
every one of her students.
Instruction Question 13: Outline the lesson plan for a teaching lesson you observed. What preparations
in advance were need for teaching the lesson? >>>

The students were required to complete an algorithm quiz during math. It was required to print
out the quiz beforehand. For students who could finish the quiz, she also had a fun math
project prepared so they would have something to do. Since Halloween was getting closer, she
had a pumpkin with numbers on it. The students were to multiply the numbers together using a
different page with sweets that had other numbers on them. After that, they had to cut and
color them to decorate.

Instruction Question 14: Describe both teacher and student uses of technology in the classroom. >>>

For math, the teachers used Chromebooks. They played games in math and could advance to
the next level if they answered the questions properly. There was an example video that
students may watch to help them through when they were having trouble solving the problems.
In the case that a student didn't comprehend the videos, the teachers would walk around the
students to offer assistance.
