CONCEPT
▪ IMBIBING INDIAN TRADITIONAL COURTYARD PLANNING PRINCIPLES & DESIGNING THE LEVELS BASED UPON THE NATURAL CONTOURS OF THE SITE,
THIS SCHOOL IS CONTEXTUALLY DESIGNED.
▪ IT RESPONDS TO THE SITE, THE DESERT CLIMATE & TO THE SOCIAL BEHAVIOR OF THE VILLAGE & RESIDENTS GENERATING THE MAXIMUM OPEN SPACE
POSSIBLE WITHIN IN VARYING LEVELS ALLOWING THE SPACES TO BE USED IN MULTIPLE WAYS.
▪ SERIES OF COURTS AND TERRACE GARDENS ARE INSPIRED FROM INDIAN VILLAGE SETTING
DESCRIPTION
▪ DESIGNED AT THE BORDER OF TWO SMALL VILLAGES IN RAJASTHAN, INDIA, THIS SCHOOL IS BEING CONSTRUCTED TO EMPOWER THE VILLAGE GIRLS &
ENCOURAGE THEM TO BE EDUCATED.
▪ CURRENTLY THERE IS NO EDUCATION AVAILABLE IN THE VICINITY OF THESE VILLAGES AND THIS PROJECT IS BEING SPEARHEADED BY A CHARITABLE
ORGANIZATION TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF THE GIRLS WHO ARE RESIDENTS OF THE AREA.
▪ WITHIN A SMALL PLOT OF 9000 SQM , THE NORTH EAST CORNER RISES UP ALONG NATURAL CONTOURS BY 4 METRES.
▪ THE CLASSROOMS AND EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES ARE DESIGNED SKIRTING THE PERIMETER OF THE SITE TO CREATE AN OPEN PLAY SPACE WITHIN THE
SMALL PLOT.
▪ THE CENTRAL FOCAL COURTYARD GRADUALLY STEPS UPTO THE NORTH EAST CORNER ALONG THE EXISTING CONTOURS WITH A CAFETERIA LOCATED AT
THIS END.
▪ FROM THIS NORTH EAST POINT CHILDREN CAN CLIMB UP ONTO THE ROOF TOP.
▪ THE ACCESSIBLE ROOF TOP WILL FACILITATE INTERACTION & COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES.

▪ THE HOT SEASON LASTS FOR 3.0 MONTHS, FROM APRIL 15 TO JULY 15, WITH AN AVERAGE DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURE ABOVE 98°F. THE HOTTEST

ALLOWING THE SPACES TO BE USED IN MULTIPLE WAYS . DESIGNED. ▪ THE TERRACES AND OPEN TO SKY SPACES BIND THE
BUILT MASSES INTO AN EXPERIMENTAL WALK FOR THE
ZONING PASSIVE COOLING VISITORS.

MAKING.
▪ SITE IS ENTIRELY PEDESTRIAN WHICH LACK TO
ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL ACCESS.

LOOKING WITH VOLUMES CONTAINING THE INSIDE
FROM THE OUTSIDE.

– CREATING A STRUCTURE THAT CAN BE TRANSPOSED.
▪ THE EXTERNAL FABRICATED FAÇADE IS A TACK-WELDED MILD STEEL FRAME WITH PANELS OF PERFORATED METAL SHEET,
PINEWOOD, REFLECTIVE GLASS, OPERABLE LOUVRES AND SLIDING WINDOWS, PLANNED WITH REGARD TO LIGHT AND
VENTILATION.
▪ CSEBS MADE OF SOIL FROM DIFFERENT SITES IN THE LOCALITY CREATE PLEASING PATTERNS WHICH HARMONIZE WITH THE
FLOOR COLOURS.
▪ GI SHEET IS USED IN CONSIDERATION TO THE ROOF SLOPE, WITH A FALSE CEILING OF BAMBOO MAT PLYWOOD FOR
THERMAL AND SOUND INSULATION, WHICH FURTHER IMPARTS A SENSE OF WARMTH.
▪ PREFERENCE OF A HAND-CRAFTED MATERIAL SUCH AS BAMBOO MAT OVER THE CONVENTIONAL PLYWOOD ALLOWS A
VALUABLE SKILL TO BE PRESERVED.

LAYOUT DETAILS AND MATERIALS


▪ THE BUILDING CONSISTS OF FOUR CLASSROOMS, A STUDIO AND A CHILDHOOD STIMULATION CENTRE AROUND A CENTRAL PIAZZA, WITH FILTER SPACES ALLOWING TRANSITION BETWEEN THE
ROOMS AND THE PIAZZA.
▪ THE TOILET IS DESIGNED WITH CONSIDERATION TO THE YOUNG AGE GROUP, CUBICLES SCALED APPROPRIATELY FOR CHILDREN AS WELL AS THEIR NEED TO BE SUPERVISED. OPEN DRAINS IN THE
WASH AREA AND URINAL WALLS ARE INCORPORATED FOR EASE OF USE AND MAINTENANCE.
▪ LIGHT DURABLE FURNITURE MADE OF HONEYCOMB BOARDS AND PAPER TUBES FURTHER ENCOURAGES KIDS TO EXPLORE AND PLAY WITH THE ENVIRONMENT.

▪ SOLID WASTE FROM THE SCHOOL IS DISPOSED OF IN TWIN LEACH PITS WHICH ARE EFFECTIVE IN RETURNING NUTRIENT TO THE SOIL. LOCAL CHAPPADI GRANITE STONE SLAB FOUNDATION, TACTILE FLOORING WITH
PAVER BLOCKS AND CSEB’S MADE OF SOIL FROM DIFFERENT SITES, A FALSE
SCHEMATIC SECTION INDICATING THE HIGHER SOUTHERN EDGE OF THE BUILDING ▪ THE LAYOUT IS COMPOSED OF CLASSROOMS, A STUDIO/ATELIER AND A CHILDHOOD STIMULATION CENTER AROUND A CENTRAL PIAZZA THAT ALLOWS FOR TRANSITION BETWEEN THESE
CEILING FROM BAMBOO MATS AND A BOLTED STEEL SUPPORT STRUCTURE.
SPACES.
FEW AREAS OF THE SCHOOL WERE ALSO LOCATED WITH RESPECT TO VASTU SHASTRA ,WHICH IS A ▪ EACH CLASSROOM ADDITIONALLY COMPRISES OF A MINI-ATELIER FOR SMALLER GROUP ACTIVITIES. ▪ THE MOTILITY IN THE PERCEIVED SPACE IS HEIGHTENED BY THE CURVILINEAR
TRADITIONAL HINDU SYSTEM OF ARCHITECTURE. ▪ THE VARIED INTERNAL SPACES OF LEARNING ARE AWASH WITH DAYLIGHT THAT FILTERS THROUGH A GENEROUSLY SKY-LIT ROOF. SHAPE OF THE CLASSROOMS ENCLOSED WITH PAPER-TUBE ‘WALLS’ OF
ACCORDING TO THIS SYSTEM ,THE SOUTH –WEST CORNER OF THE BUILDING MUST BE THE HEAVIER THAN APPROPRIATELY VARYING HEIGHTS.
DESIGN FEATURES
THE OTHER CORNERS. ▪ EDUCATIONAL DESIGN WITH A BALANCED UNDERSTANDING OF THE PHYSICAL

EARTH MOUND AT GROUND LEVEL .
ADDTIONALLY,AS PRESCRIBED BY THE SYSTEM ,TOILETS HAVE BEEN LOCATED IN THE NORTH-WEST ,THE ▪ THE OFFICES ARE TUCKED AWAY ON A SOUTHWEST MEZZANINE.
▪ THE FOUR CORNERS ENCLOSE SECONDARY SPACES INCLUDING A CAFÉ TO THE SOUTHEAST AND BASIC UTILITARIAN SERVICES TO THE NORTHWEST. ▪ THE BUILDING ASPIRES TO CREATE AN ARCHITECTURAL EXPERIENCE THAT
KITCHEN IN THE SOUTH-EAST ,AND A WATER BODY IS LOCATED NEAR THE ENTRANCE IN THE NORTH-EAST
MUTES ALL EXTERNAL NOISE, FOCALISING ATTENTION INTERNALLY.
