Assignment 3: Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication
___________________________________________________________________________
1. What is the difference between verbal and non-verbal communication? Provide
Five an example in each kind.

Verbal communication involves the use of spoken or written words to express

thoughts, ideas, and emotions. It relies on language, including vocabulary, grammar,
and syntax, to convey meaning. Verbal communication can vary in formality, such as
using formal language when speaking to a teacher or casual language when chatting
with a friend.

On the other hand, non-verbal communication encompasses all the ways we

convey messages without using words. This includes body language, facial
expressions, gestures, posture, and even silence. Non-verbal cues often convey
emotions, attitudes, and intentions that may not be expressed verbally. Furthermore,
Non-verbal communication is essential because it can complement, reinforce, or even
contradict the verbal message.

Verbal Communication:
Spoken Words: When a teacher gives a lecture in a classroom, the words they use to
explain a concept are a form of verbal communication.
Phone Conversation: During a phone call, the words spoken are a clear example of
verbal communication.
Written Message: Sending an email or a text message with written words to convey
information is another form of verbal communication.
Public Speech: A politician addressing a crowd and delivering a speech is using verbal
communication to convey their message.
Radio Broadcast: When a radio host talks to their audience, the words they speak
constitute verbal communication.
Non-Verbal Communication:
Smile: A genuine smile when meeting someone can convey friendliness and warmth
without saying a word.
Handshake: A firm handshake during a business meeting can signal confidence and
trustworthiness.

2. What special factors influence the kind of register to be used? Why is there a need
to be mindful of these registers?

Special factors significantly influence the selection of an appropriate language

register, and it is crucial to be mindful of these registers due to their impact on
effective communication.
Firstly, the context in which communication occurs plays a pivotal role. Formal
language registers are often preferred in professional or academic settings, where a
serious and structured tone is necessary to convey information accurately. Being
attuned to the context helps ensure that the language register aligns with the
communication's environment.
Secondly, understanding the audience is essential. It is crucial to gauge the
familiarity and expectations of the audience to choose the appropriate language
register. For instance, when communicating with a supervisor, a more formal language
register with polite language may be necessary, whereas communication with close
friends can be more casual.
Thirdly, the purpose of the communication guides the choice of register. A
formal language register is typically chosen when conveying official information,
making requests, or discussing serious matters.
Lastly, the relationship between the communicator and the receiver. A
respectful and polite tone is often adopted when interacting with individuals in
positions of authority or unfamiliar acquaintances.

3. How can non-verbal cues contribute to communication breakdown? (Breakdown is
miscommunication among participants.)

Non-verbal cues can contribute to communication breakdown when they

convey conflicting messages or emotions. For example, if someone smiles while
delivering negative news, it creates confusion and misinterpretation. Inconsistencies
between verbal and non-verbal cues can lead to misunderstanding, eroding trust.
Additionally, silence, when misinterpreted, can create tension and confusion. In
essence, when non-verbal cues do not align with the spoken message or are
misunderstood due to cultural variations, communication breakdown occurs among
participants.

4. Do you agree with the quotation” Action speaks louder than words”? Explain.
This is because actions are tangible manifestations of intent and commitment,
whereas words can be insincere or easily contradicted by behavior. In practical terms,
individuals tend to trust and believe in what they see and experience through actions
rather than relying solely on verbal promises or statements. Ultimately, this quote
underscores the significance of aligning one's actions with their words to convey
authenticity and reliability.
Thus, the quote highlights the importance of demonstrating one's intentions
and commitments through tangible actions, as actions are often seen as more
credible and trustworthy than words alone.
