Study Skills Workshop – Year 8 – Workshop #1

Making the best use of school time

You are in control of how you approach your learning in the classroom.

Quiz – Traits of Effective Classroom Learners

• Complete the following quiz to gauge whether you are making the most of class time.
Identify if this scenario is the case for you: Always / Sometimes / Rarely

1. You turn up to class with all the right equipment that is needed for your learning.

2. You are punctual, turning up to class on time so you do not miss the crucial content
that begins a lesson.

3. You listen carefully to teacher explanations of content and instructions on how to

start activities/tasks.

4. If you don’t understand something, you are patient with the teacher explanation,
continuing to listen so you do have an opportunity to understand.

5. If you still don’t understand something, you follow this up by asking clarification
questions (i.e. questions that help you clarify/explain new material better).

6. You refrain from/avoid talking to friends about irrelevant topics during class.

7. You avoid technological distractions – e.g. looking at emails, playing games, etc.

8. You begin tasks/activities as soon as possible, rather than requiring teacher

prompting to begin.

9. You understand that not all concepts/ideas/skills are learnt easily and
instantaneously, being patient to practise and engage with different explanations;
rather than getting frustrated and/or distracted.

10. If something is challenging, you give it a go first rather than waiting for the teacher to
come around. Then you check-in with the teacher to see how you are going.

11. You engage in positive self-talk, reminding yourself that you may not have mastered
the learning yet but are capable of doing so.

12. You take detailed notes in class that summarise your learning rather than
desperately trying to get down a word-for-word explanation.

13. You engage with all learning in class rather than only listening to what you think is
relevant for the assessment task.

14. Your learning materials (soft copies and hard copies) are well-organised so you can
access any resources quickly.

15. You reconsult resources to consolidate and test your understanding.

16. You follow up gaps in your learning as they arise rather than waiting until the last
minute – e.g. just before an assessment task.

17. You attend ASAP sessions.

18. You consult your teachers (knowing they are your best resource!)

19. You record all homework and assessments in a diary.

• As a PC group, brainstorm other traits of effective learners who use class time wisely.
Then, rate yourself honestly with these.

• Set three goals on the above, thinking about addressing the traits that you only
sometimes or rarely display.

Summary

Final reminder about class time – LAND:

• Listen actively
• Ask questions
• Note-taking
• Don’t get distracted

Quiz – Home Life

It is also helpful to check what you are doing at home to ensure you are best prepared for
class.

• Complete the following quiz using the same responses as above:

Always / Sometimes / Rarely

1. Do you sleep for 8-10 hours each night?

2. Do you avoid screen time for the last hour before you sleep?

3. Do you eat healthily before, during and after school?

4. Do you make time to exercise?

• Goal Setting: What do you need to work on from the list above?
