MAE 2600 (SP2012) Quiz #24 Solutions: B O B/O B/O Xy

This document contains solutions to two physics problems involving rotating disks and rolling balls. Problem 1 involves determining the velocity of a ball rolling on a rotating disk. The solution uses an equation that accounts for the disk's angular velocity and the ball's velocity relative to the disk. Problem 2 involves determining the angular velocity of a rod connected to another rotating link. The solution sets up and solves equations relating the velocities and angular velocities of the different links.

MAE 2600 (SP2012) Quiz #24 Solutions

Q24A. At the instant shown, ball B is rolling along the slot in the disk with a velocity of 0.2
m/s, measured relative to the disk and directed away from O. If at the same instant the disk has
the angular velocity shown, determine the velocity of the ball at this instant.

vB = vO +  x rB/O + (vB/O)xy

vO = 0,  = 2 k, rB/O = 0.4 i, (vB/O)xy = 0.2 i

vB = vO +  x rB/O + (vB/O)xy
= 0 + (2 k) x (0.4 i) + (0.2 i) = (0.2 i + 0.8 j) m/s Ans.

Q24B. At the instant  = 60, link DC has an angular velocity of CD = 2 rad/s. Determine
the angular velocity of rod AB at this instant, using the x-y coordinates shown in the figure.
The collar at C is pin connected to DC and slides over AB.

For link CD:

 = - 2 k, rC/D = 2 sin 60 i + 2 cos 60 j = 1.732 i + 1 j
vC = vD +  x rC/D = 0 + (- 2 k) x (1.732 i + 1 j) = 2 i - 3.464 j
For link AB:
vA = 0,  = AB k, rC/A = - 3 i, (vC/A)xy = vC/A i
vC = vA +  x rC/A + (vC/A)xy
2 i - 3.464 j = 0 + (AB k) x (- 3 i) + vC/A i = - 3AB j + vC/A i
(i): vC/A = 2 ft/s
(j): 3.464 = 3AB  AB = 1.15 rad/s (CCW) Ans.
