CH 17 A1 Note

This document contains class notes on planar kinetics of rigid bodies, focusing on moments of inertia. It defines the moment of inertia formula for continuous objects and discrete particles. It lists common formulas for moments of inertia of basic shapes like disks, rings, and rods. It also provides two example problems, one calculating the moment of inertia of an assembly, and another finding the center of mass and moment of inertia of a pendulum system.

Ch. 17 Planar Kinetics of a Rigid Body: Force and Acceleration

Section 17A-1: 17.1 Section 17A-2: 17.2, 17.3

Class Note for Section 17A-1:

17.1 Moment of Inertia

M=I
I= r2 dm moment of inertia
I= r2  dV dm =  dV
I = c r2 dV for a constant density c
* Parallel-Axis Theorem: IA = IG + md2

* Radius of Gyration k: IA = m kA2  kA = (IA / m)1/2

* Moment of Inertia for Typical Shapes:

Circular Disk: IG = (1/2)mr2 Rectangular Plate: IG = (1/12)m(a2 + b2)
2
Thin Ring: IG = mr Slender Rod: IG = (1/12)ml2 IA = (1/3)ml2

Example Problems for Section 17A-1:

EP1. Determine the moment of inertia of the
assembly about an axis which is perpendicular to
the page and passes through point O. The material
has a specific weight of  = 50 lb/ft3.

IG = ½[(50/32.2)(2.5)2(1)](2.5)2
- ½[(50/32.2)(2)2(1)](2)2
+ ½[(50/32.2)(2)2(0.25)](2)2
- ½[(50/32.2)(1)2(0.25)](1)2 = 65.40 slugft2

m = (50/32.2)(2.52 - 22)(1) + (50/32.2)(22 - 12)(0.25) = 14.635 slug

IO = IG + md2 = 65.4 + 14.635(2.5)2 = 157 slugft2 Ans.

EP2. The pendulum consists of the 3-kg slender rod and the 5-kg thin
plate. Determine the location of the center of mass G of the
pendulum; then calculate the moment of inertia of the pendulum about
an axis perpendicular to the page and passing through G.

=  m / m = [(1)(3) + (2.25)(5)] / (3 + 5) = 1.781 = 1.78 m Ans.

IG =  ( + m d2) = (1/12)(3)(2)2 + 3(1.781 - 1)2
+ (1/12)(5)(0.52 + 12) + 5(2.25 - 1.781)2
= 4.45 kgm2 Ans.
