Assignment 1

This document contains descriptions of four different mechanical engineering problems involving beams, rods, and linkages under various loading conditions. The problems involve determining slope and deflection of a loaded beam, displacements of a rod under bending, stresses in a curved bar under a couple load, and required diameters of steel rods in a linkage to support a given load while maintaining a safety factor against buckling.

1.

The bar is supported by a roller constraint at B, which allows vertical

displacement but resists axial load and moment. If the bar is subjected to the
loading shown, determine the slope at A and the deflection at C. EI is
constant.

2. The rod has a circular cross section with a moment of inertia I. If a vertical
force P is applied at A, determine the vertical and horizontal displacements
at this point. Only consider the strain energy due to bending. The modulus of
elasticity is E.
3. The curved bar used on a machine has a rectangular cross section. If the bar
is subjected to a couple as shown, determine the maximum tensile and
compressive stresses acting at section a-a. Sketch the stress distribution on
the section in three
dimensions.

4. The linkage is made using two A-36 steel rods, each having a circular cross
section. Determine the diameter of each rod to the nearest multiples of 5mm
that will support the 4.5-kN load. Assume that the rods are pin connected at
their ends. Use a factor of safety with respect to buckling of F.S. = 1.8
