SEMI DLP Laws of Exponents

The document provides a semi-detailed lesson plan for teaching the laws of exponents to 7th grade students. It includes the objectives, content, materials, and procedures for the lesson. The procedures involve preliminary activities, a lesson proper with group activities and examples to derive each law of exponents, and an assessment with example problems for students to practice applying the laws. The four laws of exponents that will be taught are: 1) the power of powers law, 2) the product of powers law, 3) the quotient of powers law, and 4) the law that any nonzero number raised to the zero power is equal to 1.

SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN

Date : November 11,2023

Time Allotment : 15-20 minutes

I. Objectives:

 The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of algebraic

expressions, the properties of real numbers as applied in linear
equations, and inequalities in one variable.
 The learner is able to model situations using oral, written, graphical,
and algebraic methods in solving problems involving algebraic
expressions, linear equations, and inequalities in one variable.
 After thorough discussion, the Grade 7 learners are expected derive the
laws of exponents. (M7AL-IId-e-1)
Key Behavioral Indicator (KBI): Active participation of the students in
deriving the laws of exponents.

2. ANALYSIS
1. What have you noticed about the activity? What happened to the exponents?
2. What did you do to come up with the result?
3. What law of exponents does it apply?
4. How can we solve this kind of exponential expression? What are the processes?
5. In what instances the law of quotient of a power is applicable?

Law of exponents
n
In a , a is called the base∧n is called the exponent .Exponents will tell how many times we are going to
multiply the base by itself.
1. Power of Powers ¿ ¿
 When a power is raised to another power or when an exponential expression is raised to another
exponent, multiply the exponents.
Examples:
1. ¿ ¿ Using the Power of Powers Law, multiply the exponents
300
¿x
2. ¿ ¿ Using the Power of Powers Law, multiply the exponents
12
¿2 Simplify
¿ 4 , 096
2. Product of a Power a n . a m=a n+m
 In multiplying exponential expressions whose bases are the same, just copy the common base and then
add its exponents.
Examples:
1. ¿ ¿ Since they have common bases is “x”, copy the common base
and add the exponents.
57
¿x Simplify the result

n
a n−m
3. Quotient of a Power m
=a
a
 This is only applicable if the exponent on the numerator (denoted by n) is greater than the exponent on
the denominator (denoted by m).
 IN dividing exponential expression with same bases, copy the common base and subtract its exponent.
Examples 1:
20
x 20−13
1. 13 =x Copy the common base “x” and subtract the exponents.
x
7
¿x Simplify the result.

105
y 105−87
2. 87
=y Copy the common base “y” and subtract the exponents.
y
18
¿y Simplify the result.

4. Law for Zero Exponent a 0=1 where a ≠ 0

 Any nonzero number raised to a zero exponent is always equal to 1.
Examples:
1. (145 , 734)0 = 1
0 0
2. 3 + x +¿

3. ABSTRACTION
1. What are the 4 laws of exponents? Elaborate each.
2. If power to power, what will happen to the exponents?
3. If product to power, what will happen to the exponents?
4. If the exponents are zero it is equal to
5. In what instances the law of quotient of a power is applicable?
