Civic engagement refers to active participation in the community with the aim of
addressing public concerns and contributing to the betterment of society. It involves
individuals, collectively or individually, taking part in activities that promote public welfare,
such as voting, volunteering, attending community meetings, or advocating for social and
political issues. Engaged citizens play a crucial role in the democratic process. They are
informed about local and national issues, exercise their right to vote, and voice their opinions
on matters that affect their community. Civic engagement helps bridge the gap between the
government and the citizens, ensuring that policies and decisions reflect the needs and values
of the people.
Furthermore, civic engagement goes beyond mere political involvement. It
encompasses a wide range of activities that enhance the quality of life in a community. This
can include participating in neighborhood clean-up projects, volunteering at local shelters, or
joining advocacy groups focused on issues like education, healthcare, or environmental
sustainability. Civic engagement also fosters a sense of belonging and social cohesion. It
brings diverse individuals together, fostering a shared sense of responsibility for the well-
being of the community. This sense of unity can lead to more effective problem-solving and
the implementation of positive changes.
In today's interconnected world, civic engagement has also found new avenues
through digital platforms and social media. These tools enable people to mobilize, share
information, and organize campaigns more efficiently than ever before, further amplifying the
impact of civic action. Overall, civic engagement is a cornerstone of a healthy, functioning
society. It empowers individuals to have a say in the decisions that affect their lives,
strengthens the bonds within a community, and drives positive change for the collective good.
Profile Background Community
Hi everybody, finish greeting, I want to give some description about the community that I
was joining when I was a undergraduated student at Syiah Kuala University. Which is located
in Banda Aceh, for several years I lived there. I am active in activities around campus. Some
of the ones I participated in were Unsyiah West Bank in 2019 which we usually call BSU or
Bank sampah unsyiah. Apart from that. I also focus on the environmental sector at BSU. We
are reshuffling and reusing the waste that people usually throw away without sorting it.
We sort and weigh the waste so we can recycle it again so we can use it. Well, because
my background is as a teacher or educator. I also focus on the field of education, which is
what we call our program. US goes to children, which means teaching English to children in
coastal areas in the city of Banda Aceh. that is precisely at that time in the Javanese village or
what we call Gampong Jawa.
Because of my love for the world of education, after I graduated from Syiah Kuala
University, I continued my education at Sebelas Maret University, majoring in linguistics.
The reason I took linguistics was because I wanted to learn something new, such as syntax,
semantics, phonology, morphology, which I didn't get enough of when I was an
undergraduate.
When I Learned about Linguistics I also learned about pragmatics. I hope that what I
learn at university can be useful for my community in Banda Aceh and also for the
surrounding community. Because my future dream became a lecturer.
