Lesson Plan
Topic: Addition & Subtraction up to 10,000
Objective of Lesson: As the result of the lesson, I want my students to be able to
add and subtract within 10,000. For them to fully understand the lesson and work
officially on their work and to apply it for future lessons.

Pre-Assessment: As the students come from 2nd grade, they have the knowledge
of place value to compare 4-digit numbers. While also knowing how to round
whole numbers to 10, 100 or 1000. They also have knowledge of adding and
subtracting within 1,000. I determined they have the knowledge from the
standards they were tough before 3rd grade, and if a student does not understand
I will make sure to work with that student one-on-one.

Materials needed/resources used: I will use handouts of adding 4-digit number in

columns and a subtracting 4-digit numberers with regrouping. They will be
provided in the links below.

numbers-with-regrouping-a.pdf

Procedure: I will present the information to the class by teaching them the new
stuff they do not know. After letting them show me they understand the lesson
well enough I will give them the first worksheet for them to do with a partner.
1. Introduction: I know that for the students the lesson might be boring,
but I will make sure to include some music in the background. I will let
the students ask me questions and I will ask them questions as well. I
will motivate them by giving each of the kids a piece of candy before
starting the lesson.

2. Development: As the class starts, I will start by introducing the topic to

them and talk to them about what it is all about. As the students start
to refresh their memory, I will start teaching them the new parts they
might not know yet. After teaching them the new parts, I will ask for
volunteers to go up to the board to work on some problems to see
that they understand, and if they struggle, I will be there to help them.
After I see that most of them understand I will hand out the work
sheet and let them work with partners so the students can
communicate within themselves. After they are done with the first
work sheet, I will continue with the second one as time allows.

3. Differentiation: If a student in the classroom is struggling more than

the others, I will make sure to have a one-on-one session with them.
Therefore, I will be able to talk to them and see what they do not
understand about the lesson. If there is more than one struggling, I will
do small groups where we will go more into detail about the lesson and
how to do it again into the students understand.

4. Summary: Today lesson was based on adding and subtracting number

within the 10,000. At the beginning of the class, I introduced the
lesson and refreshed what they already knew from the grade before
3rd. After that I started teaching the new stuff, I let the students ask
questions and made sure they understood the lesson in the best way
possible. If there were still kids struggling, I had a one-on-one session
with them to be able to explain it better. After all of that, I asked
questions at the end of the class to ensure they learned something
new by the end of the day.

5. Evaluation: In my opinion, something I could fix is to ensure the

students are more engaged with the lesson. That the students feel
more excited to learn about how to add and subtract larger numbers. I
must try to involve something that makes them get up and move
around or something that might not bored them.

Assessment: As the teacher, to ensure that the students have met my objective is
for me to be able to see what the work sheets are correct for most of the part. I
will also stop by each student to ask them if they need help with any problem and
if so, I will explain it to them for better understanding.

Self-Evaluation: The lesson went well, most of the students were able to
understand the lesson, but I encountered students off track and looking at other
things. Next time I will try to make the students move around and not for them sit
down most of the time because they would get bored. I will make sure that the
students are more involved in the lesson, such as having them do something that
involves learning.
