Specifications
Function principle
The MR5-10BAT / IND carries out precise resistance measurement of an object using the Kelvin
measurement method.
The measurement values thus gained are shown on the 20-character two-line LCD display.
The MR5-10BAT / IND measures the temperature of an object via an external PT100 measurement
sensor and makes allowance for changes in resistance dependant on temperature by applying the temperature
coefficients the user inputs.
The reference temperature for the resistance value shown by the MR5-10BAT / IND can be selected
between 20°C and 29°C. The default is a reference temperature of 20°C.
Permanent storage o the measurement values can be activated using the menu. The data can then later be
downloaded to a PC via the inbuilt RS232C interface.
Optionally, the MR5-10BAT / IND can be supplied with a thermal printer for immediate recording of
measurements.
The MR5-10BAT / IND can be operated from a 6V / 12Ah battery without mains power. A variable
voltage power pack permits battery-buffered mains power operation of the MR5-10BAT / IND and
ensures the inbuilt batteries are charged. External power supply via a 12V vehicle electrical system is a further
option.

Operation
Switching on
After switching on the MR5-10BAT / IND displays the firmware version number and then performs a
self-test.
Once the MR5-10BAT / IND has carried out a successful self-test the MR5-10BAT / IND is
ready for the first measurement.
If after switching the MR5-10BAT / IND on the contrast is maladjusted and no display visible then
press the STOP key and then use the MENU (SELECT) turn knob to get to the contrast setting function
directly.
The MR5-10BAT / IND will now show the currently valid measurement parameters for the
following measurement:
The MR5-10BAT / IND shows the current measurement range in the first column in the second row and
the measurement current used for it in the second column.
The temperature calculation status is shown in the third column. If 20C is shown then temperature conversion
to 20 C is active. Display of --C shows that temperature conversion is off (i.e. the PT100 temperature sensor
isn't in use).
The fourth column shows the current measurement mode, i.e. positive measurement current direction (pos),
negative (neg), alternating (alt) or especially for inductive objects (ind) .
Changing current measurement parameters is done by pressing the MENU (SELECT) turn knob as described in
the "Measurement parameter adjustment" section that follows.
The display or output of previously measured and stored values is selected by turning the MENU knob.

Make sure in wiring the potential leads that the power supply is correctly wired
(red or blue) to the relevant potential connection (yellow or green).
Rx MR5-10BAT /
IND
When connecting up the object to be measured the MR5-BAT / IND may be turned either on or off.
Caution.
Do not unplug or remove the measurement leads for the power supply (red / blue) during
measurement.
Ensure before each measurement using the MR5-10BAT / IND that the object to be measured is
completely isolated from all other circuitry and that there is no external power supply connected to the
object to be measured.

Starting measurement
Once the desired measurement parameter setting is shown measurement can be started immediately by pressing
START.
How to change measurement parameters is described below.
The MR5-10BAT / IND notifies you of having started a measurement by displaying
Start...
If the measurement mode “ind“ for inductive objects is selected the MR5-10BAT / IND charges the
connected test object until the saturation region of the test object is reached. Then MR5-10BAT / IND
measures the resistance continously up to two minutes.
If the MR5-10BAT / IND displays stable values press the button STOP to complete the test before the
two minutes are elapsed.
On completion of a measurement the resistance value determined is shown as follows:
Important Warning:
At the end of a measurement at an inductive test object the display flashes the output Discharging... . This
indicates the discharge of the test-object. It's necessary that this process completes sucessfully.
As long as this message appears, don't remove any test lead from the test-object
and don't power-off the instrument.
Danger of life!
Stopping measurement
As mentioned before, running tests in (inductive) mode can be stopped before the maximum time limit of two
minutes elapses by means of the button STOP. In this case the test result is displayed (and printed).
Measurements in non inductive mode can be stopped at any time by pressing STOP.
The MR5-10BAT / IND acknowledges by displaying:
User break !!
Page 9
