Introduction
As a requirement for the confirmation of the capacity of the pile, FERDSTAR BUILDERS
CONTRACTOR in conjunction with Universal Testing Laboratory and inspection Inc.
performed the high strain dynamic pile testing for the above mention project. The
company tested 1 pile for verification of the pile capacity. Below is the bored pile
specification:
Pile Construction
The project has adopted the bored piling method as specified above the size and
strength of the concrete.
Field Testing
The purpose of the test is to determine the pile single vertical compression bearing
capacity and detect the integrity along the pile length. Testing principle and standard is
based on ASTM D4945 known as the “High-strain dynamic testing of piles”.
Testing Method:
High strain dynamic pile testing method is to impact one force on the pile head along
the axis direction, then to get the particle stress and acceleration of the pile body
through the strain gages and accelerometers which are installed on the pile
shaft. It is one method to judge the single vertical compression bearing capacity
and pile integrity through wave theory. Please pay more attention to the following
matters when do the testing:
a. The measured pile head should be smooth, the pile height above the around
soil should fulfil the installation of the instruments and sensors.
b. Install the two strain gauges and two accelerometers symmetry on the two
sides and in one cross – section. The position for installing the sensors
should be smooth, no obvious broken around this cross – section.
c. The hammer weight is 12 tons
d. Before testing, check the working status of the instrument and sensor, and
check the set parameters inside the device. After confirming the data, proceed
to test.
e. Should measure the effective pile penetration length every hammering.

Case Method
It is assumed that the pile is a one-dimensional elastic rod, and the medium is a
uniform and continuous elastic body; the dynamic resistance force is concentrated at
the pile tip and is proportional to the speed of the pile end, that is, Rd=Jc•Z•Vb(t),
where Jc and Z is a constant; the pile side soil is an ideal rigid plastomer, and the
ultimate static resistance of each part is independent of their deformation and is a
certain value. According to the traveling wave theory, the basic formula for
calculating the bearing capacity by the Case method can be derived:
Rs=(1/2)(1-Jc)[F(t1)+ZV(t1)]+(1/2)(1+Jc)[F(t2)-ZV(t2)]
Where: F(t1), F(t2) are respectively The force value at time t1 & t2;
V(t1),V(t2) are the speed values at t1 and t2, respectively;
T2=t1+2L/C (L is the pile length, C is the propagation speed of the wave in the pile
body); t1 generally takes the time corresponding to the first velocity peak; Z is the
wave impedance of the pile material;
1. Fit the five piles with CAPWAPC professional software and fit
2. The formula is V-F, that is, the calculated force curve F(t) is fitted with the measured
velocity curve V(t) as a known condition. When the fitting calculation is performed, the
selected soil parameters are all within the reasonable range of geotechnical
engineering. If the fitting coefficient is not more than 3%, the fitting calculation can be
terminated.
Conclusion
From the analysis, the Abut A had mobilized a resisting capacity (Rult) 25424kN which
exceeds the target design of the pile integrity, the results are satisfactory. This concludes that
the pile passed the PDA load test.
